Baller Glydon Posted July 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 Of course I always clean with mild dish soap and water first, but I am wondering what everyone uses on there marine vinyl AFTER to clean off things like sun screen scum and scuffs / transfer. I hear great things about Mr. Clean magic eraser . Thanks in advance to all the Ballers!
Baller_ MISkier Posted July 15, 2015 Baller_ Share Posted July 15, 2015 Baking soda made into a soft paste with water is what I use for a tougher stain. The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.
Baller oldjeep Posted July 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 303 cleaner and a soft brush or microfiber rag followed by a lot of 303 protectant so that nothing sticks the next time. My last boat was 9 years old when I sold it with a mostly white interior that still looked brand new. http://www.amazon.com/303-Multi-Surface-Cleaner-Trigger-Sprayer/dp/B00JAMYDFC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1436973490&sr=8-1&keywords=303+cleaner http://www.amazon.com/303-30313-CSR-Aerospace-Protectant-Trigger/dp/B00KN0UOEE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1436973490&sr=8-2&keywords=303+cleaner Magic eraser is a sanding sponge, don't get it or bleach anywhere near your vinyl/stitching. jkr54
x2 to avoid Magic Eraser. I use L.A. Totally Awesome which you can get at your local dollar store. Dilute as indicated on the bottle and it makes vinyl look like new. Don't let the low price scare you off. Follow with 303 Protectant.
Baller Glydon Posted July 15, 2015 Author Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 @oldjeep thanks I used 303 protectant on our bimini but have not heard anything about the 303 cleaner. Does anyone use spray nine anymore ?
Baller oldjeep Posted July 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 The 303 stuff is recommended by name in my 2012 Malibu manual, but I've been using it a long time. Never heard of spray nine before, but from the msds it looks like it is 80% water and up to 10% alchohol/ether. Sounds more like hull cleaner than vinyl cleaner. Baller bbruzzese Posted July 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 I've used Spray Nine a few times with great results...like everyone else, I follow with 303 Protectant.
Baller 6balls Posted July 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 Magic eraser takes stuff off for sure and first time you use it you think wow this is great. Then you realize that all you did was sand off the stuff and cause a lot of wear to your upholstery. I was fooled years ago.
Baller Glydon Posted July 15, 2015 Author Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 Thanks Ballers I was specualtive of the magic Eraser and am glad I asked such a knowledgeable group. @bbruzzese thanks for the feedback on the Spray nine it is readily available here in Canada and has various uses. Baller gregy Posted July 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 Walmart was clearancing all there Babes boat products a few years ago. I've been using the upholstery cleaner since and seems to work. Also like 303 products.
Baller DaveD Posted July 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 Do any of these cleaners work for taking algae off canvas?
Baller oldjeep Posted July 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 We've used simple green for getting algae off carpet, might work for canvas.
Baller TallSkinnyGuy Posted July 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 15, 2015 There has been a lot of discussion about this on the MC Team Talk site and a lot of people there highly recommend using Totally Awesome from the dollar store followed up by 303 Aerospace Protectant as jkr54 suggested. This is what I do and it works great. I use a plastic brush and dilute the TA with half water and gently scrub spots. It hasn't failed me yet. Baller GAJ0004 Posted July 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 16, 2015 Spray Nine works very well, followed by 303 Protectant, or 3M vinyl protector.
Baller Dirt Posted July 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 16, 2015 Babes upholstery cleaner works great.
Baller Intheday Posted July 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 16, 2015 @oldjeep I am not sure on the white spirit I was assuming it may be a dry cleaning product. I was going to look into it seriously around September when I get some work done on me boot and observers seat
Baller rawly Posted July 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 16, 2015 Is the 303 protectant slippery like most of the others ? Freshly treated storage compartments ( back doors of 196 ) become dangerous to use as a step into boat if unaware of fresh application.
Baller oldjeep Posted July 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 16, 2015 The 303 is a little slippery after you put it on, but that goes away after you set it out in the sun for a little bit. Whatever the detailer used on my boat before I bought it was like an ice rink.
east tx skier
I'm told Scrubbing Bubbles and a soft brush works wonders on neglected vinyl. Follow up with a wet towel rinse and Vinylex or 303.
Baller_ Wish Posted July 17, 2015 Baller_ Share Posted July 17, 2015 @east tx skier that has been my experience. Used that for years on multiple boats. Water rinse after is key. But I just bought a bunch of Totally Awesome for another project and gonna give that a go. Rinsing well is probably still needs with that I think. And use of a soft brush is what I've been using for yrs as well. Have one designated just for the boat.
Baller Jordan Posted July 17, 2015 Baller Share Posted July 17, 2015 Some detailers use diluted degreaser, such as McGuire's Super Degreaser
CaptOldTimer
It's best to use warm soap and water, but we all know that doesn't get everything out. A magic eraser and degreaser solution are great if nothing else works. I found this article very helpful.... How to clean marine vinyl?
Baller skiinxs Posted April 4, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2017 +1 on the 303 cleaner followed by 303 protectant. Make sure you never, ever, ever use Armor All.
Baller Garn Posted April 4, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2017 I've never used anything that works as good as Malco Cleaner. I use it once a year in the Spring to do a deep clean. Unbelievable how well it works. The rest of the year I use Babes. I would put a link to it but every time I try I get a long link.
Kdinger838
Our fleet of 35 rental boats gets spray nined daily. Great stuff, use 303 or 3m protector after
Baller swc5150 Posted April 5, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 5, 2017 I always used 303, but my new boat came with a pack of Babe's products to try. It smells good and is a BOS sponsor, so assuming it works as advertised, I think I'll stick with it. I agree, for really neglected/dirty vinyl, Totally Awesome works wonders. Baller kindoitall Posted April 5, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 5, 2017 Captain Mike's is the best thing I have found in a bottle but I always use chemical products sparingly but it's great. Otherwise hot water, liquid detergent, a scrub brush, and some TLC. Works wonders.
