Baller aupatking Posted September 14, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2015 Not to plug a certain brand, or do so if you like, but in the past I've almost blown my back out several times in several different board shorts. I've found the Patagonia Stretch Planing Board Shorts to be the best, by a considerable margin. The bottom of the leg is tapered just enough that they don't balloon on me when pulling up. I suggest you try a pair. What have you guys found?
Baller Chef23 Posted September 14, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2015 I like the Hurley Phantoms. Nice and stretchy but not big and balloony.
Baller_ MISkier Posted September 14, 2015 Baller_ Share Posted September 14, 2015 These were the best for me. Overstock doesn't carry them anymore. Neoprene-lined, not much billowing, and $30. If I could find these again, I'd buy 3 or 4 pairs, http://www.overstock.com/Sports-Toys/Jet-Pilot-Mens-Neoprene-Lined-Board-Shorts/5136971/product.html?cid=95138&fp=f The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears. Baller DmaxJC_ski Posted September 14, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2015 Quicksilver for me, seem to last good, comfortable, like the tie system, get them for a reasonable price at an outlet store in a city close by.
Baller Chef23 Posted September 14, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2015 The Quicksilver ones are good also. I find the Hurleys dry a little quicker but I have a couple of pairs of Quicksilvers that are good also.
Baller_ Wish Posted September 14, 2015 Baller_ Share Posted September 14, 2015 Skier on a budget as always. So I've had the same problem in the past. Have actually altered shorts to taper. What I have found is the shorts that 4 way stretch simply do not have issues with this. I bought 6 different brands (all stretchy) from a store closing several years back. Not only have they lasted and never do this, none were high end name brands. So to me it's the material that matters. The 4 way dry fit stretch kind dry fast, never fill up with water and last. What is nice is that in the last year or so, Walmart is carrying this type of material in board shorts in several brands at 1/3 the cost.
Baller MrJones Posted September 14, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2015 I have used Billabong for the past few years, but last summer I found the Hurley Phantom's on sale and couldn't pass them up for the price. They are tighter in the leg and balloon much less than other I have tried. If I were to buy more at the moment it would be the Hurleys.
Baller Dacon62 Posted September 14, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2015 Billabong Platinum, Rip Curl Mirage, Hurley Phantom, O'Neill and others 4 way stretch, all thin, dry fast and last.
Porkfight
My two current favorite pairs are made by O'Neill and RVCA. I spend all day in board shorts when I wear them so a zipper fly is at the top of my priority list. Velcro flies are a cruel joke.

Baller bbruzzese Posted September 14, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2015 O'neill Superfreak...fit great, lightweight, quick dry and don't billow if you keep your legs together.
ricski39
In general O'neill makes that best board shorts, but their Hyperfreaks are unparalleled.
Baller Orlando76 Posted September 14, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2015 The best I've found is Oneil Jordy Freaks. Thin, light, stretch, don't hold water. I currently have a pair of Quicksilvers that are a close 2nd. I've learned sticking with a real water sports brand for board shorts is a must. Wifey used to but me ones like Old Navy, American Eagle, etc.... Those will put you in the hospital if you ski.
Baller oldjeep Posted September 14, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2015 I just use Nike swim shorts from Kohls, seem to last a couple years. Never notice any issues with them when pulling out of the water.
Baller MNshortliner Posted September 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 15, 2015 I agree with Wish. Anything with 4 way stretch is great.
Baller John Brooks Posted September 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 15, 2015 I regularly find the 4 way stretch shorts at Wal Mart & Target. Can't beat the price.

Baller LOTW Posted September 15, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 15, 2015 Superfreaks for sure, I have a pair of Quiksilver that are also good. Recently update from older Oneil shorts but still keep them in the bag as they were great too.
Baller bbirlew Posted September 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 16, 2015 My Reefs have been my most durable of the 4way stretch shorts I've tried (oneil, billabong, quicksilver being the others)
Baller aupatking Posted September 16, 2015 Author Baller Share Posted September 16, 2015 Seems to be the stretch. The Patagonia, Hurley, O'Neil, and @Wish budget deal shorts all have it.
Baller Lovell Posted September 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 16, 2015 I like quicksilver waterman collection Very light and durable No drag at all coming out of the water Can get them at the outlet for a reasonable price too

Baller Chef23 Posted September 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 16, 2015 @A_B that reminds me of my youth. We all used to ski in cut off jeans. What the hell were we thinking.
Baller aupatking Posted September 16, 2015 Author Baller Share Posted September 16, 2015 @Chef23 , you were cool. We all were. Now we're old. Baller skialex Posted September 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 16, 2015 I bought this this season and it's really great, very light but not thin, durable, it does not catches water when getting up and it does not turn to parasuit in head wind like the ones I had before. And for a change I realy like the simple looks, grey with a touch of Orange. It's an Alpinestars Archetype, it also comes in black but it looks like any black boardshorts. Baller Chuck_Dickey Posted September 17, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 17, 2015 Quicksilver amphibians for my money. Great I'm or out of the water. Quick dry and look like walking shorts, even have belt loops! Baller Glydon Posted September 17, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 17, 2015 I have worn Billabong and Quiksilver however I find the BEST are the O'neill Superfreak and Hyperfreak the original hyperfreak was CRAZY stretchy and so thin that when wet they almost pasted to your legs allowing for no billowing at all. Baller ejj Posted September 19, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 19, 2015 Patagonia stretch boardshorts here too. Some of the stretch shorts show a bit too much relief when wet...

Baller RAWSki Posted May 3, 2021 Baller Share Posted May 3, 2021 Hurley Phantom, if you can find Phanton 'Hyperweaves' they are even a tick better. Similar to what @MISkier likes --- I used to have some jet-pilot neoprene lined "Crown Jewels" board shorts but I believe they discontinued them a few years ago. Baller dave2ball Posted May 3, 2021 Baller Share Posted May 3, 2021 REALLY PEOPLE! Board shorts! With everything going on in the ski community and you post about board shorts. Baller jepski Posted May 4, 2021 Baller Share Posted May 4, 2021 Birdwell 808. Made from their SurfStretch 4-way stretch fabric in USA. Trim leg fit, dries quickly and super durable. Not the cheapest board short around but extremely well made. And reminds me of my young days hanging out in the original Birdwells...that were a couple sizes smaller:)
Baller Dacon62 Posted May 4, 2021 Baller Share Posted May 4, 2021 Very important topic! The wrong fabric type/thickness and length can making getting out of the water a lot more effort. Have thrown some shorts away because if it.

Baller Fastguy888 Posted May 4, 2021 Baller Share Posted May 4, 2021 Its a good day when you spend it in Board Shorts. I have no affiliation with but really like the quality and style of Virus Apparel. I just picked these up these are awesome. Virus should start sponsoring 3 Event Pull Sport athletes and advertise on Ball Of Spray. The O'Neil and Hurley leg holes are a little too tube like and straight where the Virus stuff fits my legs and butt great. https://virusintl.com/collections/mens-shorts/products/active-airflex-short
