tangtang Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Hello, need some advice on battling this. got stuck in weeds and engine stalled out. cleared prop...after 15 min or so strainer was full and transmission ran hot...I smelled antifreeze fluid smell. Boat stuck moving forward in neutral... checked transmission fluid which looked charcoal colored. Tommy's in Clermont is quoting me $3,600 for full replacement. Just not sure that is the best route to go?
Baller Waternut Posted September 15, 2016 Baller Posted September 15, 2016 I would at least check the shift linkage and make sure it's moving properly. I'd also change the fluid. $15 in fluid and an hour or so is worth it before calling that transmission toast. I would think the engine would overheat long before the transmission.
Baller wtrskior Posted September 15, 2016 Baller Posted September 15, 2016 That's about double what a New tranny costs. Pretty simple install too. I'd get some additional quotes...
Baller MNshortliner Posted September 15, 2016 Baller Posted September 15, 2016 I just had a similar problem in a VLX. Turns out the splined collar on the dampener plate busted. Take the tranny off, it was pretty easy.
Baller_ Jody_Seal Posted September 15, 2016 Baller_ Posted September 15, 2016 One of the problems you will run into trying to rebuild the series 40 is availability of some parts as they have become nla. $3,600 for a new series 80 is a little steep but not out of line. In that boat I can swap out the componets in about 3 hours. In a series 80 kit a new drive plate , trans cooler and transmission is supplied. $2,500-$3000 is more palatable for a new one installed.
Baller Orlando76 Posted September 15, 2016 Baller Posted September 15, 2016 As much as I hate to say take it to Orlando Nautiques and see what they say. Edit-never mind I pm'd you some info.
Baller A_B Posted September 15, 2016 Baller Posted September 15, 2016 My friend cooked his and had a guy rebuild it for a fraction of the new cost. No problems after 2 years of use. Doesn't have to be a marine dealer, any transmission shop that is decent can do it. I would at least stop by and see what they say.
