Baller TravisNW Posted December 30, 2016 Baller Posted December 30, 2016 Hey all, looking forward to the 2017 ski season and I'm interested in constructing some judging towers for our lake. Anyone with experience constructing these and maybe even have plans they would like to share? Mostly looking for something simple that I can put up and take down would be ideal.
Baller klindy Posted December 30, 2016 Baller Posted December 30, 2016 2 or 3 sections of scaffolding. There are decking components etc all available. They can be rented or purchased from any local equipment rental or scaffolding rental business.
Baller bigskieridaho Posted December 30, 2016 Baller Posted December 30, 2016 Yep scaffolding works, and that is what we have been using. We are building some new towers this year using 4 beams (old power poles) set at an angle over the edge of the water and will build a platform, ladder, etc.
Baller LeonL Posted December 30, 2016 Baller Posted December 30, 2016 If you know a painting contractor you may be able to borrow scaffolding for a weekend, seeing as how you want to take it down. Do you not want to see towers there all the time?
Baller drew Posted December 30, 2016 Baller Posted December 30, 2016 A good winter project... this one is about a year old. Hoping to get some use this spring!
Baller TravisNW Posted December 31, 2016 Author Baller Posted December 31, 2016 @LeonL we have 18 owners at the lake with 15 houses. I haven't run the idea by anyone yet but considering the fact that only 1/4 of the owners ski and even less than that ski tournaments I believe it's the most viable option. But an attractive tower like the one drew posted would be amazing. The other factor is a permanent structure would end up in someone's yard. Fortunately Houses are on one side of the like. Ultimately I would like to be able to host L and R tournaments which leads me to another question, with the right combination of towers on the same side of the lake and camera is this feasible.
Baller dbutcher Posted December 31, 2016 Baller Posted December 31, 2016 @TravisNW , if you haven't already looked, AWSA rule 10.08 starting on page 49 of the rule book might be of assistance to you. Also the Technical Controller's manual may help - both are available on USAWS' website.
Baller TravisNW Posted December 31, 2016 Author Baller Posted December 31, 2016 @dbutcher I have looked at 10.08, and the third option Looks promising. It also says to refer to iwwf rules which of course I can and will look up but I'm more curious if anyone has experience using configuration 2 or 3. For the regionals nationals and r capability tournaments I have attended and judged I've only seen configuration 1.
Baller_ lpskier Posted December 31, 2016 Baller_ Posted December 31, 2016 @drew I've been looking for a place on your side of town. What are you asking for your lake side ski condo? Lpskier
Baller drew Posted December 31, 2016 Baller Posted December 31, 2016 @lpskier you mean the dog house? Only problem is the lack of toilet...
Baller_ RichardDoane Posted January 2, 2017 Baller_ Posted January 2, 2017 @TravisNW Both Hilltop and Borderline do the scaffold thing for the L and R events. Cheap and easy.
Baller_ RichardDoane Posted January 2, 2017 Baller_ Posted January 2, 2017 We also put them up for the BOS Cash Prize at Hilltop even though it was a C.
Baller_ lpskier Posted January 4, 2017 Baller_ Posted January 4, 2017 @RichardDoane What are you doing with our judge's tower from LSP? We do have a nicer one under construction. Lpskier
Baller John Brooks Posted January 4, 2017 Baller Posted January 4, 2017 @RichardDoane looks like you need 2 more umbrellas to make that tower complete.
