Baller Kelvin Posted February 18, 2017 Baller Share Posted February 18, 2017 Boat will be used for slalom and jump. Jumpers in the 150-200 ft range. Slalom both 34 and 36mph into 39off. Any reason not to get the 450hp version?
Baller oldjeep Posted February 18, 2017 Baller Share Posted February 18, 2017 Aside from the extra $$$$$$$?
Baller ntx Posted February 18, 2017 Baller Share Posted February 18, 2017 @kelvin I have been wondering about that also. I think the 6.0L (409) is the standard motor now that the 5.7 has been discontinued. The 5.3 is the first upgrade and the 6.2 is the most expensive. I think the 5.3 has higher torque than the 6.0. Our last one we got the 5.3. It is a huge improvement for jump (180+/-) over the 5.7 I was not able to get the homeowners to pay the addtional cost for the 6.2 One other thing to think about, is that I dont think the 6L direct inject. Baller jjackkrash Posted February 18, 2017 Baller Share Posted February 18, 2017 The 5.3 is also IIRC 300lbs. lighter than the 6.0, and reportedly is quieter and burns less fuel. The 6.2 is reportedly a monster in that boat.
Baller Kelvin Posted February 19, 2017 Author Baller Share Posted February 19, 2017 I know about the 5.3 and the 6.2, but this is a repower situation and those engines won't fit without a new motorbox. Choices are a 409 or a 450.
Baller Gloersen Posted February 19, 2017 Baller Share Posted February 19, 2017 @Kelvin - pretty sure the 450 is a PCM exclusive with a modified camshaft (compared to stock 409 longblock) and an ECM tune to harvest the extra HP (and presumably torque). Both iron block/aluminum heads, closed cooling, weight, same compression, should be same octane req, etc. of course the 409 itself is plenty torquey for slalom and a great slalom pull in the 200; the 450 slalom pull some will prefer, some won't. However if the jumpers have feedback regarding the 450's comparatively greater benefit, then no reason not (other than cost) to go with the 450. @Jody_Seal would have better input. Baller_ Jody_Seal Posted February 19, 2017 Baller_ Share Posted February 19, 2017 Go with a stock 409 hp repower. Not worth the extra $$$$ in bang for the buck. Have had both power options in the past and unless you are a +220' foot jumper the 409 is pleanty.
Baller Zman Posted February 19, 2017 Baller Share Posted February 19, 2017 Wait for them to drop the Mustang Shelby 5.2L, 526 HP engine in there....
Baller Zman Posted February 19, 2017 Baller Share Posted February 19, 2017 Actually, what @Jody_Seal said. One of my ski buds has the 6.0 and swear it seems like just thumb pressure on the throttle gets skiers out of the water, plenty of power.
Baller skiinxs Posted February 19, 2017 Baller Share Posted February 19, 2017 Unless they want to jump with the hydrogate in slalom mode, the 6.0. will do a great job.
