btwent
Fairly new to skiing. Just skiing public waters the past few summers. I'm usually using my dads ski. It's seen better days- probably 25 years old. I'm a light kid, only 130 lbs, and I'm starting to get some decent cuts in. However, I think the ski is holding me back a lot. It's far too long, and I'm sure it doesn't meet the standards of today's skis. I'm looking for a ski that can really get me starting to make some nice turns. I've looked around, been interested in the Radar Senate, but I'm just not sure. That's why I'm here.
Baller jjackkrash Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 My buddy went from not being able to run a pass to running into -32 on a Senate. I think that's a solid choice.
Administrators Horton Posted March 11, 2017 Administrators Share Posted March 11, 2017 @btwent there are a lot of choices at your level. Radar Senate is a very solid choice. Baller Bill22 Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 All of the Senates are good. That said, if you have the cash get the 2017, it's a big upgrade from 2015-16.
btwent
@Bill22 I've been looking at the 2016 Senate alloy. I do have a budget. I noticed it doesn't have a wing on the fin in the picture. Do I need one?
Baller bigskieridaho Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 +1 for the Senate. It should come with a wing. If not I would get one.
btwent
How about boots- do I go with the double boot?
Baller Bill22 Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 If you have never tried double boots I recommend staying with a RTP. It's personal preference. I like a rear toe plate it's simpler and I ski better with RTP. Wing or no wing, for a freeskier that's another preference thing. If you get the Alloy a wing is probably $10 contact Performance perfski.com sales@perfski.com.
Baller jjackkrash Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 Check ski-it-again if you are on a budget.
Baller Bill22 Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 I tried both wing/no wing and left the wing off my Senate until I started skiing at 34 mph.
btwent
@jjackkrash ski-it-again looks promising. no 65" senates though. Any other skis that come to mind?
btwent
Something pretty forgiving. Chances are I wont be in a course, but still want good performance
Baller jjackkrash Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 Looking on ski it again, they have 65" Radar Strada, Connelly Prophesy, Connelly F1, HO Type Vs--all good skis. Try and find a slightly used ski as the the flex pattern reportedly can degrade over time with heavy use. Probably not as big of an issue with lighter skiers. Baller Bill22 Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 Forgiving? Look for a Connelly V. It's made for your range. I have never ridden one but read good stuff on it. Edit: check out Horton's review. He just posted a new V review with video.
btwent
Thoughts on a Strada for what I'm looking for? There are plenty of them.
Baller ScottScott Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 Ive seen recomemdations by many people smarter than i to leave off the wing until short line....so thats what im going with. Havent really asked in any of my lessons, but they've all seen my setup and never said to put it on.
Baller Orlando76 Posted March 11, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2017 I have a 2014 65.5" Mapple T1 for sale. I hadn't gotten any nibbles on it for 6 months. I feel it's a good all around ski. Some might say it's too advanced. If you're interested, I'll fit it in your budget so it'll get used. As mentioned before, if you haven't used double boots don't start. When I was on a Senate I tried every angle on the wing including no wing and no difference when I was at 30mph. Never took it to 34.
btwent
@Orlando76 I'm interested. However, doing some very brief research it seems like it's a pretty advanced ski. I've never been in a course before. Any other opinions?
btwent
Also, is a double boot safer? What about a hybrid for an option?
Baller Orlando76 Posted March 12, 2017 Baller Share Posted March 12, 2017 Opinions vary widely on whether double boots are safer. I think maybe because I've never, yet, had just one foot pop out, it's either both in or both out which is what you want. However, I really wish I could go back to a RTP due to convienance and a rear binding makes it easier to ski the tail of the ski. I wouldn't bother with a hybrid. I use a loose fitting Vector for my rear and hardly cinch it. Others feel free to chime in on the T1.
dhofert
I would love to hear more opinions on positives and neg. of the hybrid, double boot or RTP.
btwent
So; combining everyone's opinions- it seems like the 65" 2016 Senate Alloy with RTP is my best bet
