Baller oldmanskier Posted April 22, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 22, 2017 I ski on a Goode Wide Ride. When doing deep water starts the ski tends to slice in to the rope on the handle. I know some companies have guards on their handles to prevent this. I currently wrap heavy Duty Gorilla Tape around the rope on the handle and that works ok. I just have to add tape from time to time. I thought about using shrink wrap tubing like they use in electrical but was not for sure if during the heating process with a hot air gun if it would damage the rope. Anyone have suggestions for protecting the handle from ski cutting it? Thanks. Oldmanskier
Baller Stevie Boy Posted April 22, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 22, 2017 I think the only way you can avoid this happening, is to modify your deep water start, shrink wrap may help for while, but you are adding weight to the handle or tho small it is still weight you probably do not want. Baller ALPJr Posted April 22, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 22, 2017 Tape works. A couple rope makers will add tubing to your handle order.
Baller JAS Posted April 22, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 22, 2017 A few swipes with wet/dry sandpaper on edge to smooth will help as well
Baller klindy Posted April 22, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 22, 2017 Shrink wrap will work too. Masterline uses a heavy (thick) piece on their handles. I also ski on a Goode wide ride and it's barely scratched the protected ML handle whereas the unprotected handles will wear thru in about 2-3 months. Baller OldboyII Posted April 22, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 22, 2017 Masterline Carbon Handle solves this problem. @JAS the way goode ski is made makes sanding the edge very dangerous. There is not enough material in this area.
Baller oldjeep Posted April 22, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 22, 2017 Can't say I've had that issue, but if you put some cheap clear rubber tubing over the handle line that should take care of it without resorting to taking a grinder to your ski
Baller jjackkrash Posted April 22, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 22, 2017 Start with the ski more sideways and don't let the rope touch. Not too hard to do if you practice a bit. I used to chew handles but not since I decided to just not let the rope touch.
Baller bishop8950 Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 I ski with the heavy duty Masterline and I cut right through the plastic tube with Goode's. I have tried to tweak my start but it still happens. I put a few layers of gorilla tape on that side and it buys me some time. Enough that I usually wear out the handle from normal use before the ski cuts are a problem.
Baller LeonL Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 @JAS that's what they call irreversible tuning. You start sanding on the edge of a ski and you change the characteristics of the ski. Those edges are one of the things that make skis do what they do. Baller liquid d Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 Plastic tubing that goes on the triangle works just fine. Don't change the way you get up...recipe for screwing your back up.
Baller rayn Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 I use the carbon handle and i still cut through the plastic. So I double up with plastic tubing from Home Depot. I cut it in the middle a bit to go up the V and leave some past the V. That seems to do the trick.
Baller OldboyII Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 How you put plastic tube over the line in triangle area? (on my userpic is a goode ski after repair and repaint, which broke in the tip area crushed by the rope during start ;) )
Baller jetpilotg4 Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 I slightly sanded the top edge of my Rev6 from abeam the forward part of front binding on the side of ski that touches the handle to the tip. I was chewing through a handle line every month before that. Almost no sign of cutting It and handle looks brand new after 4 months
Baller Chef23 Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 Goode's chew up handles. I get up with one foot in and I seem to chew up the line less than @rayn who gets up with both feet in.
Baller OldboyII Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 The place where I skied on vacations hated me when I kept coming with goode, because two of us ruined several their handles (though it was not the best handles). I changed ski and now Im very welcome to this place ))
Baller Gar Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 Get up with both palms down and concentrate keep it off it. That's the word I got but I still forget!
Baller jjackkrash Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 @ liquid d starting to avoid cutting the rope is no different than adjusting the start for shallow water to avoid fin dragging by angling the ski a bit. I am not sure why that would result in a back injury.

Baller aupatking Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 Switch to D3 ;) . We've been getting time out of Masterline Carbon handles' wrap. Not to mention, just being a great handle.
Baller OldboyII Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 @Than_Bogan I do. But sometimes when up to 10 people waiting at the dock it is not fair to ask to change handles. Boat works like non stop shuttle. That place is hotel with waterski facility. At the high season too many come.
Baller skialex Posted April 23, 2017 Baller Share Posted April 23, 2017 I'm using Masterline Carbon Custom handles for ever, great handle but I was always jealous of how much lighter the standard custom handle is and this season decided to get rid of the tubing be more careful at the water starts and restring when needed. Anyway Custom Carbon handle us the hustle free way to go!
