Baller pgmoore Posted March 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted March 30, 2019 That’s what a NCAA pole vault record looks like: FloTrack post @Than_Bogan this is for you.
Baller dvskier Posted March 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted March 30, 2019 Outstanding performance! Think about how many times she must have made that distance in practice. You don't just roll out of bed one day and say "think I'll set a record today".
Baller Than_Bogan Posted April 1, 2019 Baller Share Posted April 1, 2019 SWEET!! @dvskier While that is possible, it's not unheard of in the vault for official meets to be the highest you've ever gone, because so much of the time in practice is working on drills and form. It almost feels like some of the top athletes don't want to "waste" a good vault in practice :).
mikegile
She is awesome! Note the school..... Go Huskies!
Baller jimbrake Posted April 1, 2019 Baller Share Posted April 1, 2019 Looks like she has more (higher) in her, too.
ToddF
Good job @Than_Bogan Probably 95% of all good vaulters have pr’s from meets not practice Honestly if your best vault is in practice you are doing something wrong or you have something way bigger coming @Mike Gile she only transferred this Summer from Kentucky and was already a two time ncaa champ
Baller DaveD Posted April 2, 2019 Baller Share Posted April 2, 2019 Question: If she took up skiing, would she progress faster than @Than_Bogan is progressing as a pole vaulter? :)
Baller Than_Bogan Posted April 2, 2019 Baller Share Posted April 2, 2019 Yes. Athletic ability is a real thing. If I need to get a trophy we'd probably have to compete in math.
Baller DaveD Posted April 2, 2019 Baller Share Posted April 2, 2019 I would think she would progress faster just because she doesn't have to deal with the fear of missing the mat.
Baller Than_Bogan Posted April 2, 2019 Baller Share Posted April 2, 2019 I'm an old guy with a healthy bias toward caution, and I essentially have no fear of missing the mat. I doubt it has ever crossed her mind. There are plenty of other barriers to progress in the vault, however!!
Baller Than_Bogan Posted April 2, 2019 Baller Share Posted April 2, 2019 @jimbrake A while back I read a fascinating study (that perhaps @ToddF pointed me to?) that indicated that elite pole vaulters usually reach their peak height after they've been training at the event for 15 years. It's that technical. So unless she started vaulting at age 5, statistics are in her favor to indeed have a bit more height in her future!
Baller pgmoore Posted May 9, 2019 Author Baller Share Posted May 9, 2019 Not directly related to the NCAA record, but it turns out that Buzz Aldrin was a pole vaulter before he was an astronaut. That's actually pretty cool. Link below. "a different type of flying"
Baller DangerBoy Posted May 9, 2019 Baller Share Posted May 9, 2019 It's also a little known fact that in case of an engine/lift-off failure in the Eagle effectively leaving him and Armstrong stranded on the moon, it was Aldrin's back-up plan to pole vault back up to the command module. :p
mikegile
Space is cool, but could he ski?
