My grandfather was a prolific experimental scientist whose inventions include the solar battery (since renamed to photovoltaic cell, a name he didn't like very much). He taught all of us that "If you can't explain the core idea in one sentence, then you don't understand it yet."

 

Absolutely true. Over my lifetime, I've noticed a corollary to this, in that there are two very different types of long-winded explanations. In one case, the person is desperately trying to increase his own understanding, so that someday he can explain it in one sentence. In the other case, the person has absolutely no effing clue what he's talking about.

 

Being able to tell the difference between these is enormously valuable.
