What are people using for a rear boot behind the Syndicate hardshell?

I just bought a Syndicate hard shell and I use a Radar HRT for a rear boot. I skied the other evening and took a fall where I released from the front boot. Sounds great right???

The rub is that the way I released was that the liner and my foot came out of the shell (luckily) and the shell stayed on the ski. Not good!!!

What happened was the release mechanism couldn’t open up enough to allow the shell to come off of the ski due to the height of the toe area on the HRT. I tried moving the boot back to allow the release to work. I’ve moved the rear boot back 3/4” and I’m still not sure that I trust the front boot to release. I run my boots close together so 3/4” is a huge move! Any suggestions on what will work behind the Syndicate hard shell?

I use a Wiley's behind my reflex (same release mechanism) and it works well. What ever you use be sure you test the release mechanism before you ski. There are videos around on dock testing the Reflex (again, same release mechanism). I run my boots pretty close together, I find where my back toes touch the front boot then move back one hole, the release barely touches the back boot before the boot is free, I can come out of the front with my back foot still in.

I am not a huge fan of the standard dock test, I have fallen onto the dock. I like to get both feet in my boots, sit in the water with legs pretty straight and give the tip of the ski a good hard yank toward my chest (similar to removing a jump ski), it allows me to feel how much force is required to remove both boots. I do it anytime I make changes to the bindings and then about once a week to ensure things are functioning properly. Its the same idea as the dock test, I just find it to be a little safer.

I've been on hardshells of some type for about 16 years and have taken some nasty falls and have released on some and not on other. I can not fathom how you came out of the boot... I once pulled the mounting bolts for my velcro setup through the bottom of the boot, but still stayed in the boot.

I run a Radar HRT behind my syndicate shell and have never had an issue - several OTF falls where it released correctly. My rear plate is pretty close to the front, I took a grinder to the back of the syndicate plate to mate it better to the front on the original HRT plate.

Note: the 2020 HRT has a lower profile and gives you more space under the release mechanism.

@MattP I was really surprised that I came out with the liner on also. I’ve been running the upper cuff pretty loose try to get used to it. I’ve been on the FM with the 404 release for a number of years without issue (until recently) so I’m pretty sure that I had it on correctly and my toes are right near the end of the liner. When I retrieved the ski I expected that I was going to have to dive to find it but it was still on the ski with all of the buckles open

Yikes - I didn’t know you front boot had cracked, that’s not right. What did you have the tension set to on the release?

Actually, in reading your previous post regarding skiing with the top buckle loose - that’s will not allow the release mechanism to work correctly and is why you came out the way you did and is unfortunately why the shell cracked I suspect.

The new Syndicate boot has the stainless steel release arms on the back (silveretta 840 release), the 1st generation the release arms are black (silveretta 750 release) which rust...

Dang. Are you injured?

I would definately do some release testing before I skied on that setup again after looking at that boot. If you aren't injured, you should consider heading to the casino.

Last year I skied really well and this year I haven’t been able to slap my ass with both hands! I’m guessing that it started cracking early season and has progressed. You’d think that I would have noticed but I hadn’t released from the FM this season so I haven’t had the Shell off the ski.

I have the release set super light for my weight with no prereleases and it’s always released when needed.

I’m currently a fat pig at 215 with the 404 release set at 4-4.5.

I feel really lucky that I didn’t get injured with either system.

Ummm your first post COMPLETELY insinuates you crashed with a Syndicate and a Syndicate broke, I'm no the forum police here but kind of misrepresenting and making HO look bad when in reality there is no issue what so ever with their product...

Agreed, super confusing how this post is put together. Nothing about the crash is necessary in original post as from what I can tell the only question being asked is what are people using behind their syndicate hardshell. I use a reflex hrt and enjoy it very much. Not a fan of how this thread portrays a very solid HO product tho. Glad you’re ok after the fall man, stay stoked!

How on earth does this NOT sound like you are insinuating you were using the HO at the time??

Think the post needs one of these LOL
