Baller slvrbulit Posted September 9, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 9, 2020 Last weekend I noticed my voltage gauge higher then it normally is, I mean up on the high side of the gauge, around 16 volts The boat is a 98 ski centurion with a 350 mag mpi motor. Do you think my alternator might be on its way out? Battery is 2 years old.
Baller BraceMaker Posted September 9, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 9, 2020 Get a voltmeter out and actually test voltages. Another common culprit can be poor connections where particularly if there is a remote sensing alternator it can be seeing a low battery voltage despite there being a high output voltage. This would read as say 16V at the alternator but say 12.4 at the battery posts.
Baller slvrbulit Posted September 10, 2020 Author Baller Share Posted September 10, 2020 Thank you @BraceMaker. That is my plan this weekend. I didn't have my multimeter with me last weekend but I will check it this weekend for sure.
Baller BobF Posted September 10, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 10, 2020 Coincidentally, I just replaced the alternator on my 98 MC 350 this year. I fought with a sporadic stalling issue for two years. Found that voltage spikes from the alternator were shutting down the fuel pump. If yours is questionable, and you have the Leece Neville 51 amp, let me know. I found a reasonably priced replacement.
Baller slvrbulit Posted September 11, 2020 Author Baller Share Posted September 11, 2020 Thank you @BobF . From what i have been able to find, mine is a 70amp.
