Washing hands

I have a question, watching the Mastercraft Pro, I noticed that a lot of skiers was washing their hands with soap before skiing...

I wonder what is the reason for that ?

They do it to get dirt,oils,sunblock,food orany other grim or oily substances off there hands. Otherwise it can get in their gloves and affect there grip on the handle.

Sunscreen in my gloves or booties is really annoying, i usually wash hands and feet on the platform before i gear up if I've used sunscreen over the last couple hours.

I also noticed they do this to their handles.

I was at Swiss two weeks ago with my hands already torn after a few days of skiing. I asked Benny Stadlebauer and learned exactly what @dave2ball said. Clean the oil off, gloves grip without sliding and tearing calluses. Especially in warm water.
