Baller herseyj Posted October 17, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 17, 2023 Thought I saw this rear binding on Howley and McCormicks skis at Worlds. Anyone know what it is? Just trying to satisfy my curiosity.
Baller MDB1056 Posted October 17, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 17, 2023 Joel's is completely fabricated I believe. Not sure what Cole is running.
Administrators Horton Posted October 17, 2023 Administrators Share Posted October 17, 2023 @herseyj that is absolutely not what Joel is running. it does look to be a Wiley back binding with odd overlays. it does sort of look like a 1970s or 1980s Kidder or EP binding, but I'm pretty sure that's just some odd parts on Wiley. I would be 0% surprised to see that on Cole's ski. Baller herseyj Posted October 17, 2023 Author Baller Share Posted October 17, 2023 Hmmm well boy it sure looks like it on both their skis. Tomorrow I’ll try to get some shots from there sets and zoom in on the boot. Looks pretty darn close. Old doesn’t mean bad. Looks pretty darn functional to me. Baller aupatking Posted October 17, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 17, 2023 If it has ANYTHING to do with Kris Lapoint, you never know what will be on the ski, or part of the ski. My lakeowner and Kris go back to the 70’s. You should see the crazy stuff leaning against his ski shed. 2 different skis cut down the middle and glassed together really crazy progressive asymmetrical tunnels. Honestly, I love half rear boots, so a toe with a heel cup and a flimsy overlay is right in my wheelhouse
Baller skialex Posted October 17, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 17, 2023 Kris Lapoint makes this blue rubber kind of overlay. Cole is running it and I’ve seen it on other skier’s Lp skis. the rest is Wiley’s rear boot parts
Baller MDB1056 Posted October 17, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 17, 2023 @herseyjsomewhere here I saw a recent closeup of Joel's rear boot fabrication. Maybe it as even in the Bob Marley piece..... . It's definitely a chop job though that works for Joel . You'll agree when you see it. If I find it I'll bring it back here but check there

Baller BraceMaker Posted October 17, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 17, 2023 Its just whatever Cole is using as a rear binding overlay, his just looks like some EVA or rubber sheet punched out. Note the torn out eyelets that has all the hallmarks of cobble it together with what you have when you have it. Howleys is more what can I assemble with a cordless drill angle iron and stuff I buy from the hardware store wherever I happen to be today. Note all of this boot mounting plates are just hacksawed off aluminum L bolted through with nuts on the outside. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci7kPHrODFv/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Baller herseyj Posted October 17, 2023 Author Baller Share Posted October 17, 2023 Best pic I could get of Coles'. Thanks, everyone. Looks like Joel called on the cycling shoemakers to mold a carbon sole to his foot and build an upper. Love the creativity and concepts. I like the idea of a rubber rear like shown in the original post. The Radar Vector Hybrid RTP Binding is the closest thing I can find. I will stick with my rear D3 T-factor for now. I just leave it completely loose. I did have to modify the front T-Factor boot a bit and remove the rear plastic plate. I wanted my feet closer together and back of the front boot sticks backwards a bit to much. They are built for tall guys and not short guys with big feet.
Baller_ Wish Posted October 17, 2023 Baller_ Share Posted October 17, 2023 For what it’s worth, Joel H rear boot is a carbon fiber speed skate boot. Most likely custom molded. It is not meant to release in a fall as is the front boot.
Baller BraceMaker Posted October 17, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 17, 2023 @herseyj https://wileyski.com/wiley-cbo-rear-on-universal-plate/ Honestly what he's using reminds me mostly of show ski swivel binding parts.
Baller jedgell Posted October 18, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 18, 2023 @Wish pretty sure Joel H’s front binding only releases if the hose clamps break.
Baller_ Wish Posted October 18, 2023 Baller_ Share Posted October 18, 2023 @jedgell“It is not meant to release like the front…as in neither release even though the back boot may look like it could.
Administrators Horton Posted October 18, 2023 Administrators Share Posted October 18, 2023 @jedgell the front boot also releases if the angle brackets break 1 Goode ★ HO Syndicate ★ KD Skis ★ MasterCraft ★ PerfSki Radar ★ Reflex ★ S Lines ★ Stokes ★ Baller Video Coaching System Drop a dime in the can
Baller Deanoski Posted October 18, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 18, 2023 Here’s the rear boot I have been using for 6 years Willey rear toe with cut down Willey heel. Then a custom wrap. before and after wrap installed pics
Baller aupatking Posted October 18, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 18, 2023 @Deanoskiyou wanna make another one? You could make them in mass and, in the waterski world, stand to make tens of dollars. I'd by one
Elite Skier Popular Post Cooleo15 Posted October 19, 2023 Elite Skier Popular Post Share Posted October 19, 2023 Hey guys! Thought I'd jump in and provide a little info on my back boot. My boot is very similar to what my Mom (Susi Graham) used when she skied on the tour. I believe it was a boot made by EP and called the "Comfort Grip". The only difference with mine is I got rid of the front tongue with the finger holes. I never used them to get the binding on and all they served to do was create more drag. So now the front piece is just a Wiley XL toe piece. My Dad (Ricky McCormick) has the template for the overlays used on that EP binding from back in the day. So we just cut out overlays when we need them. The back piece of the binding is just the front part of an old EP binding my Mom used to use that we trimmed down. I also punch enough holes in the overlay so its loose enough I can pick up my heel, but not twist or move around in the binding. I've been using this binding for about 5 years now. Seems to work pretty well for me. Hope this helps answer most of the questions! -Cole McCormick
Baller aupatking Posted October 19, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 19, 2023 @Cooleo15thank you for the info. I remember a video of Andy showing his heel didn't really move much in his RTP. I'm no AM! My heel is all over the ski in an RTP but I've always felt that it is probably the best due to the ability to move forward on the ski. Your boot and the one that @Deanoski has made look perfect. Looks like i need to go on a thrift store search for old skis to cannibalize!
Baller ALPJr Posted October 19, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 19, 2023 Funny, I thought that looked familiar. The coaches put those same boots on my EP at Jimmy Durhams Ski School in SC back in ‘89 😎
Elite Skier Cooleo15 Posted October 19, 2023 Elite Skier Share Posted October 19, 2023 @aupatking I definitely would recommend an overlay on your binding though. Whether you go with something similar to mine or a rear kicker. It helps stabilize and reduces the rolling of your foot in the back boot. There's a fine line between being able to move onto the front of the ski and your foot moving around too much, making it difficult to be balanced and consistent with your moves. Heel lift is good but foot roll within the back boot is not from my experience. I think the big key is to have a boot with no wraps that go above the ankle bone. Having control above the ankle promotes heavy turns, which is not a good trait with Zero Off. You want all the heavy load to be behind the boat not at the bouy.
