The Triple Crown Data

After further review, I realize that the data on Wikipedia is complete crap. This is a waste of time. Whoever created this data should short-sided at every ball on every slalom pass for the rest of their lives.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Masters_Water_Ski_Tournament_champions#Champions

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Water_Ski_World_Championships_champions

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Moomba_Masters_champions

The data on the intertubes is not the best. I am moderately confident the below list is complete and accurate. I am currently wrestling with a version of how many total titles each skier has and then ranked from most to least.

My confidence in online source water ski data was fair until I realized that whoever created the Masters Results page thought that Ana Maria Carrasco &  Maria Victoria Carrasco were the same person. If you know your history you know they are sisters. I can't know what other errors are in the source data and have not found better data sets.

Making this more confusing are skiers whose names appear differently in different data sets. Examples are Carlos Suárez vs Carlos Suarez  / Whitney McClintock Rini vs Whitney McClintock / William Asher vs Will Asher / Fred Winter vs Fredrick Winter and my favorite Natalia Berdnikava vs Natallia Berdnikava. Messy data makes using simple Excel vlookups problematic, to say the least.

Anyhow below is the gross list of all the skiers who have at least one title Slalom, Trick, Jump, or Overall from Masters, Moomba, and Worlds.

Alan Kempton
Ana María Carrasco
Andy Mapple
Anna Gay
Bob LaPoint
Britt Larsen
Bruce Neville
Carlos Suárez
Cindy Todd
Cory Pickos
Deena Mapple
Elena Milakova
Emma Sheers
Erika Lang
Freddie Winter
Freddy Krueger
George Athans
Helena Kjellander
Jacinta Carroll
Jaret Llewellyn
Jimmy Jackson
Jimmy Siemers
Karen Neville
Kristi Overton-Johnson
Liz Allan
Mandy Nightingale
Manon Costard
Mike Hazelwood
Mike Suyderhoud
Natalia Berdnikava
Nate Smith
Neilly Ross
Nicolas le Forestier
Patrice Martin
Patricio Font
Regina Jaquess
Ricky McCormick
Ryan Dodd
Sammy Duvall
Thomas Degasperi

It is not going to be me but it would be amazing if someone in the sport with some basic data skills and some free time could audit and clean up the historical data on the internet. I would be happy to host the results and or be happy if the Wikipedia data was updated and corrected.

Maybe it should be a task for https://www.usa-wwf.org/hall-of-fame or https://iwwf.sport/international-hall-of-fame/

@BKistler I sort of had the opposite reaction.  43 skiers who have won at least one Worlds, Masters, and a Moomba? It is pretty rare air.

The names missing are also interesting. Geoff Carrington, Dorien Llewellyn, Brett Thurley, & Kim Laskoff all have a Worlds and Moomba but not a Masters.

This is an odd triple crown.

Worlds - All the top skiers are there so the competition is the deepest. Happens every other year.

Masters - Hardest to enter. Smallest field but is generally only the very best skiers.

Moomba - By far the easiest to enter but is by far the most expensive to attend unless you live in Oz. Generally not as many super elite skiers per event.

@buechsr My data says Scot has 3 Moomba titles but no Masters or World title.

@mbabiash nope Wade has 2 Masters but no World or Moomba

I show Scot won Masters in 98…I can’t find a worlds though you’re right.

I see Jaret winning in 98 but like I said in the original post i have doubts about my source data quality. Do you have a link?

After further review, I realize that the data on Wikipedia is complete crap. This is a waste of time. Whoever created this data should short-sided at every ball on every slalom pass for the rest of their lives. Their trick rides should be driven in jump mode and their jump drivers should go left at the bottom of the ramp.

@buechsr

Ellis at Masters in 1998 was SkiFly not jump. I am still over this.
