  1. Those were shoreline mounted speed gun acquisitions if I recall. I'd venture to say that less skilled skiers running -22/-28 can do so with lesser "speeds" than displayed by Wade Cox; that is he's skiing his longer lines in "prep" for shorter. At some point the critical path as the line shortens (-38) requires greater velocity. It'd be interesting to see speed gun data at -39/-41, as well as the location of max speed (center-line, off 2nd wake, etc.).

One can snapshot "speed" and try to surmise differences at -38 and shorter, but speed is merely a scalar quantity and doesn't reflect the real challenge; adequate velocity or momentum (MV - conceptualize the vector quantity). IMO this topic is what GUT centers upon; getting "up on the boat", not just trying to ski "wide".

Running -32 and sometimes -35 can be hacked through by "taking the handle where I want it to go", but with poor momentum and end up chasing the boat. If -38 ever drops it'll require re-training the mindset to ski by "following the only path the handle can go"; with improved momentum; carrying me "up on the boat".

So it's not necessarily an apprehension of "speed" but rather, a lack of concept (or ability ), but it's remediable.

There's a lot more to it of course but thinking about it on the ski is fruitless imo, just gotta do it.

  2. @MISkier - that shaft key appears bent and jammed obliquely in the shaft key slot.

You may need to clean up the edges (of the slot, new key needed of course) carefully with a fine file and read this:

    Lap Fit a Prop

Voice of experience here since I deployed a new Acme 422 to the bottom of the lake a few years ago, where it still remains.

  3. @Kelvin - pretty sure the 450 is a PCM exclusive with a modified camshaft (compared to stock 409 longblock) and an ECM tune to harvest the extra HP (and presumably torque).

Both iron block/aluminum heads, closed cooling, weight, same compression, should be same octane req, etc.

of course the 409 itself is plenty torquey for slalom and a great slalom pull in the 200; the 450 slalom pull some will prefer, some won't. However if the jumpers have feedback regarding the 450's comparatively greater benefit, then no reason not (other than cost) to go with the 450.

    @Jody_Seal would have better input.

  4. @Mitzysman - that's a cool boat! Would think that if those rear bimini straps don't interfere with the line at 15/22, then the jump seat occupants would be okay if the captain is reasonably vigilant. Handle pops are a risk hard to avoid but typically skier intensity related.

If the asking price is still 17.5k, imo that's too much, even if the boat is somewhat of a rarity (~180 made?). The boat looks good with the new vinyl but an 18 yo Merc (2-stroke); maybe 60% of that price and its worth a look.

There may be a lot of fun, great-time, open water experiences left in that rig, for the right price.

  5. an additional spare puck (two spares), assuming low cost, is a good measure of redundancy if your boat is the only ZO vessel available. It also presumes the shelf-life is indefinite. We've had two (actually 3?) puck failures on the '09 since inception, suspect at least one of those was due to near lightning strikes; it almost makes more sense to keep one good one as a spare instead of having two good ones installed.
  6. Concur - Double Approaches were the bomb on the Monza!

    IMO try:

    1.) Radar Vapors

    2.) Radar Vector/Lyrics (most cost-effective)

    3.) D3 T-factors.

Have tried all, they don't have the inherent dorsi-flexion as the Approaches but probably the next best thing with regard to ankle flexion and the easiest transition.

Demoing would be best if possible.

  7. @Wish - yes, Andy (all the great short-liners) epitomize an optimal vector quantity; they make the most efficient use of their momentum.

"smooth" is kind of like "counter rotation"; it's the result of a cascade of effective technique, not so much a deliberate action in and of itself.

then of course there is "calamitous"; a result of a corkscrew of cataclysmic technique. There were times when watching me behind the boat that I'm sure Andy wanted to jump out and swim to shore...but he never did! :)

  8. Recall when JT LCQ'd and won the Masters as Jody Seal pointed out; if remembering correctly, he was in the boat a ton on a hot, sunny day pinning trick, etc. Then skis lights out for the slalom win. Pretty cool (exemplary)!

Even if the officiating is less than expected, all the skiers are more than expected; excellent ambassadors for their sport.
