This will be a permanent course put in by Jon Travers.  I'm hoping some of you will come by and help me break it in over the next few months.  I'm just a newbie learning to ski and hoping I can improve with my own course.

    @GWaterski???

Sign me up. You have a dedicated slalom I can use? I'll bring my own rope and vest! IPA's or gas cash too.

@scoke Sorry no video at this time and in the tuning phase still only free skiing. My ski routine has been 32, 35, and 38off 32.3 mph behind 3 different boats.

Since your free-skiing and not behind zero off, wouldn't something like a Senate Pro Carbon type of ski be much easier to ride and more forgiving? And much cheaper?

I'm looking to order one of these in Large or another brand for my weird height and weight. Just struggling to get video of anyone actually running real buoys besides from the manufacturer. Just lots of words and promises.

  3. Your 24 second spray outbound to buoyline is part of my mental model:
    your left elbow

    your left hip

your handle with two hands, bent arms out to the buoy line.

your straightening your legs to keep your com neutral balance point on your ski as you swing connected.

So curious how I could execute better from your eyes. Seriously.

now your “out of” 24, that’s a different story haha

  4. Saturday I was very sad.

Msscoke wanted to water ski at Okeeheelee so I loaded up the boat, checked the battery and made darn well I had a prier (props to teammalibu), whacker and yardstick to adjust my boots for the water temperature.

Before we left, I asked a skier what the water temperature was to make sure I could block off an hour moving my boots before I skied. Maybe even retaping my ski as I move my boots every set and then make fin changes between sets based on the dew point vs humidity vs octane and UV index.

The skier sent me this pic, i couldn't make heads or tails of it, the units baffled me. Then I checked my ski log as I couldn’t figure out what to do as I’ve never seen anything like that!! So we stayed home, ate a pizza and was semi-sad.

@scoke  Which way are are the boots going as the water warms?

For Goode brand skis and the southern states, as the water warms up move the boots back 1/16 and maybe 2/16 Depending on the skier. and vice versa.

For most of the Goodes, there is a sweet spot, 64-72: 72:82: 82+

So initial setup of your ski matters greatly as where you are standing on the ski in regards to the water temp.

Do you swim out and take the temps in the middle of the course after a few passes or right there by the dock?

    oh shoot. Forgot about that.

oh no, I mixed 87 octane with 93 octane.
my boots are in the wrong spot, no wonder I am squatting a pulling across the boat and a 4@32 off skier!!!

  7. That’s a valid point.

yes most goode skiers who run real buoys have it down and don’t blink at moving the boots fwd/aft with water changes. I’ve seen a few D3 guys make the change too.

maybe more skiers need to do the same?

related note “why”. As the water warms or cools, the ski changes the way it sits in the water. We are losing our balance point like a teeter totter. We need to move  our connection point to be back of the balance point and all will be well.

if you never think you are on the balance point, that’s the first step in the process. Jam them forward until to plows at 135!!!

  8. A few brand of skis, one rule of thumb applies.

For every 8 degrees of water temperature change and a range move the boots about 1/16 or nearly 2/16.

Being April, if folks have been skiing, it's time to make the change.

Some brands of skis you want the boots far forward to the feeling of forebody plowing at 135 as a righty, then move them back 1/16.

@Horton  I’m as astonished as you are. But the skier In the photos I uploaded runs into -38 at every tournament, and probably every day.  I have to think  he knows what he is doing.

Running 35’ from the whitewash as a turn in point due to drifting on the gate while behind 6..2L engine with single pick zero off but can’t run 38? Uhhhhh. Something smells.

the video or pic you posted looks like an older Malibu with probably perfect pass yes?

    got video from the boat?

Horton, you and your pandas.... You're such a tool!
Ski boat manufacturers screwed the pooch by making more and more expensive ski boats. Many other factors are killing the sport too! Today's kids are too scared to waterski, wake surfing has RUINIED recreational sports on smaller public lakes. On a 400 acre lake, it only takes about two surf boats to ruin the water for EVERYONE! Glad to hear that some states are cracking down WAKE boats! Anyone who wake surfs or owns a wake surf boat and thinks they are cool, are clueless!  It's a lame sport!

I looked at buying a RV just last year and prices were whack and dealers weren't budging! But yes, I look at prices now and better now.

There is NO reason ski boat manufacturers can't make affordable ski boats. NONE!

  11. I'm interested in September. Sounds interesting as we've been wanting to get to northen Itlay.

Fly into Milan? Have airport pickup or need to rent a car? Looks like decent flights Miami-Milan.

In your title you used the word "Free". Do you mean "Open" spots or it's a free trip to Ballers and just need to get there.?

His primary (if not sole) focus should be getting across the wake without fear and with speed, angle, and body position (@markn photo).  Won’t matter how wide he starts, he will loose all the width after a few balls if he can’t get across the wake properly. When he is not able to ski the course he should ditch the turns and just practice getting across the wake.  A while back, @RobHazelwood posted a video on working up to a full speed wake crossing which could be beneficial.

    Ditto.

All I see is FEARRRRRR. DON'T CRASH!

The current path is of a very long journey of being a 15 off at 34 mph skier as an accomplishment. Then one day a break through and ending the journey as a mid-pack squat and puller with an average of 4@32 off on a good day.

Why not learn and break it now?

Upgrade the ski to something like a Senate-C, practice lean drills per the Britdudes videos linked below my post. Try, learn, take some spills and recognize you're not going to die. Repeat. Get over it.

  13. Pretty good skiing considering.

unfortunately, 35 at 344 behind a zero off boat is going to be an Everest climb.

    1) you’ve got the wrong Palm up. It’s detrimental to your hips being tucked under the handle and being worked outbound

    2) even  if you have the best position in the world “stacked” (archaic term) it doesn’t matte. Why? By your mental model of water skiing revolves around PULLING. The boat will always own you as you pull.

read all my previous posts about “squat and pull”. You’re right in the heart of the bell curve. Results show too.

but don’t let the tone of my post get you down.

    YOURE asking the right questions!!!

  14. Saturday i put my hands on this handle at the dock. Very interesting design and legit. It's obvious the thought is being put into it, passion and care.

Very cool innovation as well as skiers solving problems "for us". inspriring.

I could see this thing going somewhere as well as a handle we use in our boat.

  15. 15' @30 mph through 35 off, is about trying to go fast enough efficient enough.

38 off and beyond, is about trying to slow down enough, on time and efficient enough.

Squat and pulling is exteremely counter productive to either of the two above but it will run you buoys.

Kinda like calling dog paddling "swimming".

I hear skiers talk about this, but I do not personally relate. I am not 100% sure but I am inclined to think that what you are describing cannot be “Everything else is correct but the skier leaned on the rope too hard / too soon”.

Hi John, not speaking for the previous posters but it's sometimes not ideal to put words in when they weren't used nor assume meaning outside of the words.

    "LEAN HARDER"

is 100% not the same as

    "PULL HARDER"

a few posters are clearly referring to pulling, not leaning. Very different.

If someone is paying attention to my posts, majority of the time I am saying "squat and PULL". These are the guys that are arm skiing, firing all their muslces and trying to be a "10" across the boat. They are tensed up, veins popping and usally exahusted. They'll also talk about how out of shape they are and gotta ski more, even though they have been skiing for 2 months, to get in ski shape. NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

Which is why in my posts on the "what to do" perspective, I am constantly focusing on Loose and Lean, yes, lean deeper, more angle, roll the ski on a deeper edge. That's one of Adam Cords strengths. Props to him as it appears he's on the right trajectory.

Our phsycial strength is NOT the power source, zero off is. We need to be using our strength to protect our postion and movement. Skiing is about holding postion and moving. Versus not pulling and trying to power across the boat and out around the buoys.

Most skiers are pretty hard headed so it sure is fun to watch them fight to their failures and plateaus over their beliefs while they are not improving.
