  1. Do you have to earn one to buy one? That could encourage poor behavior.
  2. I checked maybe. It all depends if the new organization put on economical events near me. I am more about the grass roots, family events. And also maybe because another organization in a sport with limited participation could dilute participation and resources further.
  3. P.S., I wonder what the Riders of Rohan are riding this year?
  4. I found the water ski course, near Edoras (or where the Edoras scenes in LOTR were filmed). It was pretty blown out. No, I didn't ski. Not that I brought a ski. But fun to find a course way the heck down here in the Southern Hemisphere.
  5. For me, the speed, the centripetal force, and the feeling when it all comes together. I don't jump, and tricking was never that fun for me. If I am going slow, I would rather wakeboard or ride a fat ski.
  6. Summer of 2017 I got some coaching, got plenty of water time (for me), and trained for and skied in a comp, and made some significant progress as a result of all that. Last year, I did not get as much water time, and other than some vid of some free skiing I sent in, did not get any coaching, and did not set a hard goal. I had some fun skiing, but did not make any real headway in terms of improving buoy count, even in practice. This year, although we are still melting out from a huge snow year, and the lakes will be full of wood for a while, I plan on getting more water time, trying my hardest to work a tournament into my schedule, and will get some coaching and train toward that tourney goal.
  7. Yes, I think some do. But not nearly all. I have been primarily a recreational skier, who has taken my skiing seriously and tried to improve it to the best of my ability, but done it for fun. Lately, I chose to try competition and get some coaching and that was super fun, and greatly added to my enjoyment AND success in improving. I have been around some tip top level skiers who have very fun personalities. I have also been around some folks who take themselves WAY too seriously. But in my experience, the real pros I have encountered are great people to be around. It is some of the wanna be's whose expectations are overly high and unrealistic given whatever hampers them that seem to be the pills. If one can enjoy the journey and have realistic expectations (something @MarcusBrown and @Luzz helped me learn in one of their presentations) and continue to pursue it, all the fun in the world can be had along the way. I agree with @jhughes about separating personality from skiing level. I also do agree that if you want to really improve, you need to invest in coaching, training, some discipline and dedication, etc. But that can still be approached in a very fun way. Go ski and hang with @twhisper . You'll see.
  8. Hey @bigskieridaho , which way is your handle bent? For my elbow problems I had a couple years ago, it would have been better for the handle to be bent like a moustache rather than a smile. Like how hands would be on swept back handle bars. Seems like most bent bars are the other way, and when I tried that, I did not like it. Fortunately, my elbows felt better after a season's rest, and some exercises, and I have not had trouble with my small diameter 13. I like your theory on the hips. I might try a 12 to see how that works for me.
  9. @Jmoski Season before last, I had done my oil change with the Rotella right before I found out the certification had changed. I left it and it did fine. Oil stayed clean and full. Next time I did Delo. Will probably just go get Delo today and my Wix filter, and get it all done, as it is a rainy day, and I might as well get it done today. We are starting to get near freezing at 5-6 in the morning, and looks like we aren't getting out any more this year.
  10. I mountain bike more. It is way easier for me to get on a trail than behind a boat. I live in Sun Valley. Really good mountain biking. There are a couple ski lakes here. I am able to get on a friend's lake, about 45 min away, when I am invited. the other lake, much closer, is great too, but I do not have a membership. Public water is about 20-25 minutes from where I live, when Magic has water in it. I hope to help out with a public course that used to be there next year. The high mountain lakes are awesome to ski on, but no opportunity for course skiing.
  11. I am going to buy a HO Freeride with a front boot that takes 7-11 feet, and covers the weights I will typically find, so I can get about anyone up on a slalom ski. We already have combos, a drop ski, etc. So ready to get anyone out there that wants to.
  12. Hey. I am very willing but have had no contact. If you have any ideas how I can better help, please let me know. I remain willing to help.
  13. WRT the whiskey, I'm cheap. A bottle of Jameson, perhaps Caskmates edition, and I am fine. Or maybe Knob Creek.
  14. @bigskieridaho , darn it. I had posted I hoped it was not a spouse and that the spouse was then scarred from driving forever. This is worse. I sure feel bad for them. I hope they get the kid right back on the horse.
  15. I do really honestly feel bad for that driver. I hope it was not a spouse, or if it was, the person was not traumatized beyond ever driving again for the other spouse or family member.
  16. @LeonL A while back they had new ARC's on sale direct, and they still do have yellows. But not in the size he wants. That is why I pointed toward Wiley's as I had seen both ARC's and NRG's there. Normally, I would want to buy direct from D3.
  17. Huh. Looks like that big tower is making it hard to drive straight. ;-)
  18. You might check in with Wiley's in Seattle. They had some ARC's and I think some NRG's when I was last there a month or so ago, in our size of 67". Probably better to call them than rely on the website.
  19. I am not sure, as I need to do the same. Specifically more course skiing. Access to course is the issue for me. There is a lake that is close, I am self employed and could ski there, but the club price is pretty steep for me at this point in life. There were courses in public water also pretty close, but they did not get put in this year. Looking at finding the people that used to put those in and see if I can help.
  20. I love this ski. Felt immediately comfortable, but with so much potential for me to grow into. Every improvement in form that I make is rewarded, and it is forgiving as I work to figure it out.
  21. TEST, 1, 2 . . . TEST, 1, 2! EDIT: Seems to work.
  22. F**k yes. I love the feelings, the water, the camaraderie, all of it. I like to improve as a measurement of how I am skiing, but that is secondary to the rest of the experience.
  23. I like it. If you do, I say go for it. And if you really find you need two syllables, you can always add a y. As in Stack-y, or get Stack-y, which could be a new suggestion from the boat, etc.
  24. Iron Mike Hughes, also known as Magic Mike, passed away a while ago. He taught snow skiing in Stowe, Chile, and for over 50 years in Sun Valley, and was a friend of mine. He also apparently was a very good water skier. I saw pics of him doing various acrobatics and jumping, and apparently at one point was a distance jumping record holder. Any of you water ski brethren remember him from the old days of water skiing? I feel he taught me 3 things. 1, suit up and show up. He did every day, and taught the last day of the season this year, at 89. 2. Stay curious about the world and things you love, and curious about other people. He could find a way to teach pretty much anyone, because he cared enough to learn about them. 3. Greet everyone you meet as a friend. He certainly did that. God Speed, Iron Mike. Life Story for Michael "Magic Mike" Hughes Michael "Magic Mike" Hughes OUR “MAGIC MIKE”, THE LION OF THE MOUNTAIN, went to meet our Lord on June 20th 2018. Mike Hughes was born on August 20th 1928 in New Britain, Connecticut, to parents Raymond Hughes and Julia Jones Hughes. From an early age, Mike paved his own way and became a lifelong ski instructor. Over his 70 year career he taught thousands of skiers – from Stowe, Vermont to Portillo, Chile and finally to his beloved Sun Valley that he called his permanent home. In 2018 he received a plaque from Sun Valley Ski School commemorating 50 years of service. In his early years, he was nicknamed “Iron Mike” for his spectacular water skiing abilities. At one time, he made a record distance jump of 138 feet! On Sun Valley’s Bald Mountain, his name transitioned from “Iron Mike” to “Magic Mike”, where he took countless skiers, at every level, and transformed their abilities. What he instilled in thousands of students was often almost miraculous, hence the name, ‘Magic Mike’. Mike’s humor, storytelling and his ability to bring excitement to every experience is what set him apart. Mike loved what he did, did what he loved and never worked a day in his life. He skied not for money or glory but to impart his uncanny insight for improving technique and his skill for teaching the sport he so dearly loved. He also will be fondly remembered at Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church, as the spectacular Irish tenor that always sat in the front row. Mike’s old friend, U.S. Ski Team legend, Marv Moriarity, recently recalled fond memories of their days in Stowe, VT, in the early 60s, with skiing ‘greats’, Penny Pitou and Betsy Snite, stating that Mike’s enthusiasm and style could certainly be called, “flamboyant”. Marv later visited Mike in Sun Valley as their circle of skiing buddies also included local skiing icon, Nonie Foley. Mike’s parents, younger brother, older sister and a nephew all preceded him in death. Mike – your countless friends and family will always remember their newly acquired skills and the resultant joy you brought to their lives. You will be dearly missed by everyone who had the opportunity to experience the ‘magic’ you created on the snow. Mike's Story The video is a little of his chatter, and his skiing at age 89. Sorry it won't embed. Quite a guy. https://vimeo.com/285422611?ref=fb-share&1
