  1. Not able to give advice going from a vapor to a Works directly, but can share my experience with the Works 01. I have skied  several Radars and loved the ones I rode.  Picked up a Works 01 (bought without demo as I had been riding Omegas for 3 years and figured it would be similar, but better....it is). Looking at my skiing log, did my first set on the ski in May of last year at Swiss and my summary of the review is:  First set on the ski with stock settings, free skied opener, then 28, 3 x 32, 35 and 5 @38 all at 34 mph.  The ski is very fast, will carve very short radius turns without losing speed. Allow the ski to establish angle out of the turn and you will have tons of space going to the next buoy. Awesome on-side turns. Ski rolls on edge exceptionally well. My style is a bit more of grip it and rip it (although trying to improve) rather than smooth technique, but the more you ask of the ski, the more it gives. Have not skied as much this spring as usual, but recently been skiing some very rough water, windy conditions. I am amazed what this ski can do even in pretty challenging conditions.   To get and idea of what the 01 and 02 can do,  watch Will Asher , Jon Travers and Allie Nicholson  on the 01.  Then watch Beny Stadlebauer, Rob Hazelwood and Jamie Bull on the 02...(all on TWBC from the Swiss Pro)    There were a lot of Syndicates on the podium Sunday.  Great skiers on great skis.  Give either a rip, you will not be sorry.

  2. In the videos, he looks very narrow for the gates.  Far too much hip/handle separation resulting in flat ski and no angle. and "draggin arse"  with shoulders forward will never generate speed.  Appears to use the buoy as the point to begin turn resulting in getting farther and farther down course.

Perhaps try the "lean drill" by putting rope on 28  or 32 and practice leaning drills on the side of the boat to get comfortable with a more solid leaning position.  Work on getting as wide  as possible before the buoy and initiating turn prior to the buoy.  He might even try keeping both hands on the handle.

Attached is a photo showing body position approaching wake from 4 to 5 ball.  Not great, but notice shoulders, hip and handle position allowing for ski to be on edge and creating space to the next buoy.

Use some time on the water working on fundamentals rather than getting frustrated chasing buoys

Good luck and keep at it.

  3. Dang I love @The_MS!!  And for clarification @buechsr,  my Little league, Wild Cat baseball , competitive swimming , and recreational snow skiing was not government supported and certainly did not require oversight by some federal agency.  Further, I raced bicycles in college and the entire program was self funded with ZERO tax payer dollars.  And yes, we travelled and spent 3 weeks in Florida training.   As far as a childhood obesity problem, you are suggesting the remedy is more involvement from a newly formed government agency??

  4. The responses validate the concern.  Granted, I am more than likely older than the respondents (nearly 68) and my generation was far less conditioned to accept and questioned giving up "freedoms for security or comfort".  From elementary school through college, I participated in  several sports and never once was the topic of "equity" brought up nor the idea of central control in return for a tax break.    Other than to have more centralized control over kids sports and to further advance specific policies, why is there a need for "a new office of sports and fitness in charge of  coordinating and developing youth and grass roots sports"?  Once the office is established, what other new policies will be implemented??

Further, in what economic world does it make sense offering funds from health savings accounts to be used for sports equipment and travel expenses?  (mental health and exercise?? )   Sounds very much like "buying" the acceptance of more centralized control over youth sports.

While I respect the opinions of  others, my position on this proposal has not changed.

When SS became a requirement for skiing, I was one of the many who quit competitive skiing. Stated that conformance was acceptance.  Also warned about the lost art of drawing the line and that SS was only the beginning.  Before reading the attached opinion piece from the Wall Street Journal, even I could not have envisioned the extent to which politicians would go in their efforts to control every aspect of our lives.  Now I know. I take no joy in being correct in my prediction.

  6. @MDuffinNot exactly the same, but similar.  I am right foot forward, but have a torn right ACL.  Tore it back when I was in high school (in a chariot race for Latin club....yeah, alcohol was involved) Anyway, never repaired, but over the years had the torn ends trimmed  as well as 2 surgeries to trim MMC tears.  Currently 67 and have never had an issue.  Use double rubber boots (D3 black out front and Wiley rear).  When skiing my best a few years ago, got through 39 off, still skiing at 34 mph and get through 38 on a good day.  For me, the issue of lateral instability is when the leg is straight.  As long as the knee is bent slightly, the muscles seem to stabilize the knee. Best wishes for a rapid recovery and hope your outcome is similar to mine and you can get back on the water with no issues.
