Manon Costard made some groundbreaking history in the collegiate spectrum of waterskiing at the 2014 Collegiate Regionals at Ski Texas in Alvin, Texas. Representing the ULM Water Ski Team, Costard captured a colossal score of 3@39, a pending women's collegiate slalom record.
Costard, being at a collegiate tournament, was mainly focusing on enjoying her set and not on trying for the record. But then, she ran 38 off and her mindset rose to a whole new level.
“I was trying to stay focused and calm for 39, but that wasn’t easy because I was already pretty excited about running 38,” Costard said.
A wall of spray went up around 3 ball on Costard’s last pass and her team erupted with cheers as she held onto the slack and squeaked back through the gates.
“I hadn’t been that happy after a tournament in a while, so it felt amazing. I couldn’t stop smiling! It’s always a great feeling when you don’t expect much and end up skiing well.”

It was a quick trip for me this weekend to Orlando for Jack's Splash for Cash event at Jack Traver's Sunset Lakes. The location for next weeks' 2014 Senior World Championships. This event was a 2nd year Introductory Elite Tournament. 2 preliminary rounds Saturday with the top 8 scores from either round advancing to the 1 round final Sunday. 13 skiers were on the list including 6 of the top 7 guys on the Elite Skiers World Ranking List. After the first round, I ran 1 @ 41 and was the cut line in the 8th spot. First round top scores were Nate 1 @ 43, Matteo Luzzeri 3 @ 41 and Jon Travers 2.5 @ 41. The second round was in the rain and the top 8 moved around a little but the top 8 stayed the same. Top 2nd Round scores were Nate Smith 5 @ 41 and Will Asher, Thomas Degasperi, Freddie Winter and Jon Travers 3 @ 41. The finals was moved to Lake Sarah, otherwise know as the trick lake, due to a long weather delay on Saturday. I was first off the dock in the finals Sunday. It was a noticeable head tail (about 12mph). My goal was to put up a good score to put the pressure on the rest of the field. I was able to do just that as I ran 3 @ 41off. I did exactly what I wanted to do and it was now a waiting game to see what played out. Freddie, TGas and Will went on to tie me. We were in a 4 way tie for first as top seed Nate Smith took the water. All four of us stood on the dock as Nate came into the course at 41. He had a great one, a big two, he safetyed 3 ball as he was on the tail and then he dropped the shoulder and gave it eveything he could to get to four and he squeaked around it for the win. I was still thrilled with my performance and it was a succeful weekend on skiing.
Now I have a few weeks off of tournaments as I get ready for my last 3 tournaments of the year; Imperial Record, US Open and Mapple ProAm Challenge. The US Open is the last Elite Tournament of the year.

DETAILS: Finals and beer garden/festival ending with the concert and award presentations. Concert will begin immediately after the last jumper and will go until 8:00pm. Skier-After-Party will be at the “Hammered Lamb” directly across from the US Open Site on Lake Ivanhoe. Each skier receives their first drink free.

Ski with the Legends will take place at Lake Grew (Polk City, FL), the World Barefoot Center (Winter Haven, FL) and on the west coast at Crystal Point Lake in Gilbert, AZ. Saturday Night, the Ski with the Legends event is hosting a dinner and open bar for all participants of every event at the Fantasy of Flight Officer’s Club in Polk City, which is open to US Open skiers as well. The world’s top water ski athletes will compete for cash prizes and respective titles in men’s and women’s slalom, tricks, jumping and overall in the heart of the water sports capital of the world. The world-record capability preliminary round will take place Oct. 23-24 at Lake Grew – adjacent to USA Water Ski headquarters and the USA Water Ski Foundation’s Water Ski Hall of Fame & Museum – in Polk City, Fla. It marks the first time since 2007 that the U.S. Open will take place, and it comes as USA Water Ski celebrates its 75th Anniversary. As part of the year-long 75th Anniversary celebration, and in making this the fall season’s ultimate water sports weekend, the USA Water Ski Foundation – which raises funds to preserve and celebrate the history of all towed water sports – also will host its annual Ski with the Legends event – featuring some of the competing U.S. Open athletes, including world jumping champion and record-holder Freddy Krueger and world slalom champion and record-holder Nate Smith – on Saturday and Sunday at Lake Grew.

After skiing twice and pulling husband Freddy Krueger and training partners Adam Sedlmajer and Alex Lauretano, Karen pulls back on her super-suit, picks up Dash from school, runs errands and even finds time for a workout.
"Karen does an amazing job when it comes to balancing skiing and family," Lauretano says. "But what's more impressive to me is her and Freddy's teamwork off and on the water. They really work together to give each other, and the kids what they need, and it shows in her skiing. Just a handful of months after having Ridge and she's back on the podium."
It is late in the evening and Karen is still working her magic powers. After the gym, she attends to any cleaning the house requires, makes dinner and helps Dash with homework. How does she do it?
"It's a work in progress," Karen articulates. "I am finding parenting gives my life more balance, and because so much of my life is skiing, it gives me a much needed opportunity to concentrate on something else."
With two kids and a full-fledged career in waterskiing, schedules are ever changing. Taking one step at a time has been a key to maintaining balance; generous support from the couple's parents has also provided stability.
"The tricky thing is that life with kids is ever changing, so just when you think you have it all figured out, you start over because you are in a different phase of their life, " Karen expresses. "We just take it one step at a time, but the one thing we couldn't do without is the help of our parents."
Certainly, her hands are full, yet Karen has attested that family life doesn't have to slow down or hinder your career. In fact, Karen has proved quite the opposite. For more than ten years in counting, she has held a top five spot in the world in elite women's slalom.
"Karen's ability to deal with Dr. visits for sick kids and school appointments and everything else that has popped up over the last 5 years and still get all the on and off the water work needed to stay at a top 5 level has been nothing short of inspiring," husband Freddy Krueger exclaims. "I think Karen likes the challenge of raising her level of skiing to heights that people typically don't expect mothers, let alone new mothers, to achieve by creating a fluid structure of family first, skiing second mentality. It is truly humbling to watch her have a baby and within 7 weeks of a C-section compete at the prestigious US Masters and miss out of the finals by a single buoy. That's a toughness you rarely see in this world!"
As an older competitor with responsibilities off the water, Karen has had to learn to train differently to better fit her schedule.
During the week, Karen skis three days in a row, twice a day. Though she is not necessarily training less than before, she is more attentive to how her body can handle the stress of being a mother and a professional athlete.
"I am certainly more thoughtful of my recovery time," Karen says. "I never know how much rest I will get with a newborn in the house. I am more conscious of taking care of myself %E2%80%93including nutrition, therapies and cross training. I believe all of these things have been a tremendous factor in keeping me stay in the game over these last few years."
With this super mom's dedication, love for her family and passion for her sport there is no doubt that the name Karen Truelove will continue to dominate the charts. And while every super hero stumbles at one time or another, Karen knows you just have to get back up, kiss the scrapped knee, dry the tears, fight for that extra buoy and make the most of what you have.
"Living is learning and learning is living."
After four months, five rounds and 31 head-to-head match-ups, crowning the 2014 GOODE Bracket Challenge champion came down to the very last pass as the finals took place last week in Ogden, Utah.
On the line were bragging rights among some of the best 34 mph skiers in the world, as well as a potential $5,000 prize for one lucky fan whose bracket still had a chance at being perfect.
