This past weekend I was in Orlando, Florida for the Orlando Extreme Watersports Fest. The event featured Men’s Slalom and Jump, Wakeboard. This event was put on by Casey Mommer and CBS Orlando; the company Casey works for. On Friday the 18th, there was a qualifying round for slalom and jump on Lake Grew at USA Water Ski Headquarters / Fluid Ski & Sport.  There were 17 slalomers and 12 jumpers. Top 10 in each event advanced to ski Saturday on Lake Ivanhoe.

The Semi Finals was a 4 buoy course on Lake Ivanhoe. I was the first skier out on the lake so I had to try to figure everything out and I think I was a little too tentative out there. Fluid felt really soft and slow on Friday but Lake Ivanhoe’s water temp was a little cooler and the lake was about 20ft deep.

Nate, Aaron and Jon had a run off for the top 2 to get in to the head to head super final. It was dark and I have no clue how the skiers or driver, Les, could see anything. Slalom wasn’t suppose to go that late so they did not have lights set up for slalom. Aaron went first and ran 2@41, Jon ran 1.5@39 and Nate ran 2@39.

    Super Final Head to Head
Aaron chose to go first so Nate had to beat Aaron’s score. They started at 38. They both ran 38. Aaron came back and ran 2.5@39 and Nate ran 39 to win the event. It was impressive skiing by both skiers because I don’t know how they could see anything.

Even with the lights for jump, it was extremely dark out there. In the end, top seed Dodd edged out Freddie by a tenth of a meter to take the win.

The event took place on Lake Ivanhoe which is located right near downtown Orlando. The site hosted a ProTour stop back in 1989, but has not hosted an event until now. Throughout the day on Saturday there was a wakeboard tournament, bare footing, wake slake and FlyBoard demonstrations to keep activity going on the water. There were venders on site as well as a few of the local DJs sponsored by CBS radio spinning all day.
Qualifying for the slalom and jump events took place on Lake Grew during the Holy Cow Cup tournament on Friday. The top 10 of the 11 jumpers and 17 slalom skiers went to the Semi-Finals on Lake Ivanhoe on Saturday.
    Mens Slalom Semi-Finals & Finals
The mens slalom event started off with a Semi-Final round to take the top 10 down to 6 with a starting line of 32off. Brian Detrick (USA), Terry Winter (USA), Adam Sedlmajer (CZE) and Pietari Ronkko (FIN) were eliminated with Nate Smith (USA) being the top seed going into the Finals. In the Finals the top 6 skiers went out at 35off to try and secure their spot in the Head 2 Head Super Final. In the Finals Thomas Degasperi (ITA), Chris Parrish (USA) & Will Asher (GBR) scored 1.5 @ 41. Jon Travers (USA), Aaron Larkin (NZL) & Nate Smith (USA) scored 2 @ 41.
    Mens Slalom Run-off
Only the top 2 skiers were advancing to the Head 2 Head Super Final. With 3 skiers tied at 2 @ 41 there was a runoff needed. Larkin went back out first in the 3 way runoff at 39off cold and scored 2 @ 41. Travers followed with a 1.5 @ 39. Last off the dock was Smith who needed to beat Larkin's score of 2 @ 41 to be the highest seed going into the Super Final. Smith scored 2 @ 39 to beat out Travers, but not Larkin.
    Head 2 Head Finals
The schedule of events was made to have slalom ending just as the sun was setting but, because of the runoff the slalom finals started to run into the night under the lights. The lights were more configured for jump rather than slalom. This made the night conditions a little more difficult than normal during a night event. Larkin was the highest seed going into the finals and chose to ski first. The starting line for the Finals was 38off. Larkin scored 2.5 @ 39 and Smith ran 4 @ 39 for the win of the Super Final.
    Mens Jump Semi-Final
The Men's Jump Semi-Final was full of spills and thrills. Tom Asher (GBR) stuck a solid 214 and set the bar high as the first jumper off the dock. Up and coming jumper Daniel Efverström (SWE) was pushing hard to make the finals with a solid 198' going into his final jump he lost it in the air and took a big OTF. Alex Paradis (CAN) passed hist first jump, crashed on his second then landed a 145' jump. Bojan Schipner (GER) jumped 212'. Steven Collins (CAN) jumped 196'. Damien Sharman (GBR) jumped 212' which would secure himself a spot in the finals. Zack Worden (USA) who is just coming back from injury secured himself a spot in the finals with a jump of 207'. Igor Morozov (RUS) just missed the finals with a jump of 204'. Freddy Krueger (USA) went 217' to secure the 2nd seed spot in the finals. Ryand Dodd (CAN) made himself the highest seed going into the finals with a jump of 224'.
    Mens Jump Finals
Ryan Dodd was the highest seed through all the rounds during the weekend. Dodd won the mens jump event with a distance of 206' under the lights. Freddy Krueger, who is still recovering from injury, took 2nd place with a jump of 205'. Damien Sharman took 3rd with a solid jump of 202'. 4th place was Tom Asher with 200'. 5th went to Bojan Schipner with 199' and 6th place to Zack Worden with 190'. This is the third win for Dodd this season. His previous being the LA Night Jam and the MasterCraft Pro Shootout.

BELCHERTOWN – The state has denied a request for a water-ski slalom course on Lake Metacomet, saying the fixture is too dangerous and would interfere with the public’s use of the Belchertown waterway.
Residents and town officials vociferously opposed the water skiing course.
David Fuhrmann, of 87 Metacomet St., who requested the permit says he will appeal the determination. He also has a home on Long Island in New York.
“I am not trying to stir up trouble with the state but it’s discrimination,” Fuhrmann said. He stated that he believes there are 12 other water-ski slalom courses operating on public waterways in Massachusetts, but did not name them.
In an interview Wednesday evening Fuhrmann said he has retained counsel and is researching the matter with his lawyer that he did not identify.
There was heavy community opposition to the Fuhrmann plan.
At an Aug. 26 Belchertown selectmen’s meeting all but two of the sixty that attended opposed the water slalom apparatus.
Fuhrmann applied for a permit from the Department of Environmental Protection in July.
Records show that the plans Fuhrmann filed with the DEP on July 21 measure the course at 75 feet wide by 950 long. They also state: “300-foot setback on sides; 700-foot setback on ends.”
Using the water-ski slalom course “if permitted, would jeopardize the public rights of others on Lake Metacomet,” the DEP wrote in the denial.
“The layout and use of the course on Lake Metacomet, a 74 acre Great Pond, would interfere with public rights of navigation. It would generate water-borne traffic that would substantially interfere with other water-borne traffic and impair in a substantial manner the ability of the public to pass freely upon the waterway” and interfere with “public rights of fishing and fowling,” the DEP stated in the Oct. 4 decision. It was signed by Robert J. McCollum, Wetlands and Waterways Program Chief.

e age of 92. His loss is a loss for all in our sport. Apart from owning two Ski Schools, starring at Cypress Gardens and thrilling audiences on the water for 50 years, he was awarded the Order of Merit by the IWWF in 2003. Just remembering Banana George today brings a smile to the face. We offer our condolences to his wife and extended family. May he rest in peace.

The record was set at a tournament held at Imperial Lakes in El Centro, California and is pending approval from the International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation (IWWF).  At 17 years old, Lang is still competing at the junior level and has been a force to be reckoned with after coming very close to breaking the record a few times this season.

“The Ski Nautique 200 is such an incredible boat with its solid wakes and super smooth surface it provided me with the necessary tools I needed to set the pending world record," commented Team Nautique athlete, Erika Lang.

“Everyone at Nautique couldn’t be more excited for Erika’s world record accomplishment behind the Ski Nautique 200 this past weekend!” stated Nautique President/CEO Bill Yeargin. “Erika is an outstanding athlete and person; she has a very bright future and we are very proud to have her on Team Nautique,” Yeargin added.

    Imperial Lakes
This past weekend I flew down to Southern California for the Imperial Record; the last record capability tournament on the West Coast in 2013. Imperial Lakes are about 90 minutes east of San Diego; 20 minutes West of El Centro. For the first time in a while, my dad joined me on the trip for a little father son bonding. I had been looking forward to this event and had been skiing well, but I came down with a cold last Wednesday and it is still kicking my butt. I am hoping I will be over it in time for this weekend’s event in Orlando.

This event was a three event record; 3 rounds of Slalom and 2 rounds of trick and jump. This tournament is always able to pull in some great skiers. For Open Men there was myself, Nate Smith, Nick Parson, Tyler Yager, Parker Staver, Steven Brooks, Open Women Erika Lang and Masters Men Scott Larson and Dave Miller. Erika Lang set a pending world record in women’s trick; tricking 10,180pts. She is the 2nd women to ever trick 10,000 points and this is the most points a female has ever tricked. Her dad told me she still has more tricks to add into her run and that her goal is to be at 11,000 by this time next year!!! Her brother Nick Lang wasn’t to be out done as he set a Boys 3 Jump Best of the West Record; jumping 174ft. Nate ran 1/2@43, Nicky P ran 2.5@41, I ran 1.5@41, Tyler ran 3.5@39, Parker 1.5@39, Dave ran 2.5@41 and Scott ran 2@41.

Centurion Carbon Pro was used for 2 out of the 3 slalom rounds. Chris De Vito set a personal best of 2@38off behind the Carbon Pro. This was the first time he ran 35! Congrats Chris!! Alex Gaharan tied his personal best, 2@22off 34mph, and a few others ran their pb behind the CP as well! Pacific Slalom was out at the event as well. They had a full line of ski products; skis, gloves, ropes, vests, bindings, apparel, etc. Chez of Pacific Slalom always supports the local tournaments and has product on site to make it convenient to get your skiing products. You can also purchase product through their website - http://pacificslalom.com http://briandetrick.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Screen-Shot-2013-10-15-at-1.45.04-PM.pngPacific Slalom
Imperial Lakes put on a great event! They had an awesome dinner Saturday night with Chris De Vito’s band, Blonde Brothers, playing throughout the night. On our way back Sunday night to fly out of San Diego, the De Vito’s suggested we stop by Brigantine Seafood for their fish tacos. We were not disappointed!!! It was an amazing meal and the best fish tacos I have ever had!!
Overall, it was a great weekend of skiing with a great group of people and great company with my dad. I fly out this Thursday for the Orlando Extreme Watersports Fest. This will be the last tournament in 2013 for me.
