Baller Boody Posted July 13, 2011 Baller Share Posted July 13, 2011 We have a newer lake and every year, the lake weeds get worse. Appears to be Sago pondweed as the main problem. We've used Aquathol K, but don't seem to be getting the result at all. I've just picked up some Nautique aquatic herbicide but haven't put it in yet Sonar is too expensive. Anything else out there you guys are using that works?
Baller 6balls Posted July 13, 2011 Baller Share Posted July 13, 2011 Aquathol will kill curled pond weed, but even after application will be a bit before it falls. It does not kill a number of other species. Have had excellent luck with hydrothol 191 which hits most everything. Best to hit it when the weeds are low before they are messing with you at the surface. Can get it in small granules and use a spreader off the platform, or just chuck it off your dock if that's the area that's problematic.
Baller Boody Posted July 13, 2011 Author Baller Share Posted July 13, 2011 Thanks, I will look into hydrothol, pretty cost effective too. How much do you generally use in a season?
Baller_ Wish Posted July 13, 2011 Baller_ Share Posted July 13, 2011 KillLakeWeeds.com. Aquacide Company .. they have a great catilog that runs down which chem works best on which weed. Baller nam1975 Posted July 13, 2011 Baller Share Posted July 13, 2011 Sonar...and yes is is a little $$$$...but we need it.
Baller 6balls Posted July 13, 2011 Baller Share Posted July 13, 2011 Wish is right these companies can usually tell you what kills what, how to spread etc. Most often such in theory needs permit, but the folks selling it to you are not concerned w/whether or not you are permitted. They provide you the info and sell you the stuff, the rest is up to you.
clemsondave
We used Cutrine Plus this year with good results. Pretty safe product and worked better than the copper sulfate we used last year.
Baller_ Wish Posted July 13, 2011 Baller_ Share Posted July 13, 2011 Carful with the Carp. I used them over the last 15 yrs and we have guessed (educated guess) correctly with the appropriate stocking levels. They to in some states require a permit. We used a local university and our local fish and game to do independent studies and determine appropriate number of fish based on measured plant life and water body conditions. We have successfully contoled hydrilla (eval invasive plant that can render a lake unusable) for more than a decade with carp and chemicals (minimal chem). There or numerous local lakes that have overstocked fish and or overused chemicals and put the lake so out of balance that it's taken more than a decade to recover and it cost a lot more than if they had gotten the appropriate recommendation from the professionals. Stepping around a permit and not getting pros involved can cost way more in the long run.
Old MS Accout
We have had both e-milfoil and curly leaf pond weed in our lake. After a testing of Sonar we realized that we needed more than the gallon we put in the lake 2300X300 average depth about 5feet. We are now using only Reward. It runs anywhere from 120-160 per gallon. We use about 4 gallons total with 2 gallons per 23 gallons of water in a bulk sprayer. Reward is a contact herbiside and must hit what you want dead. It will kill most emergent weeds known to man. We have a bit of algae also, so we put about 75lbs of crystal copper sulfate in at the same time. Our lake is now crystal clear, weed free and skis great. Baller Marco Posted July 14, 2011 Baller Share Posted July 14, 2011 We had a big problem with Sago pondweed in our lake shortly after we built it. You could not even swim across it. We treated it with Natique (fashioned a spray rig from a 100 gallon tank and arms from PVC with holes drilled in it). You have to treat the entire surface of the affected area. Our lake is only 9 acres so it is no big deal. We then put in 100 steril grass carp, and dye the lake, and have had no problems since. You should touch base with Glen Tashima at Monterey Chemical in CA. He is an expert on identifying weeds and treating ski lakes, and can supply the aquacide. He is a friend of Will Bush's, and is a skier, so he understands ski lakes. Google Monterey Chemical and you should be able to find him.
Baller jedgell Posted July 14, 2011 Baller Share Posted July 14, 2011 We just used a product called Cascade, it's similar to Reward but about 1/2 the cost. Last year you could almost walk on the lake the weeds were so bad, this year there's hardly any sign of them. Treated the lake for about $500. Baller Marco Posted July 14, 2011 Baller Share Posted July 14, 2011 The chemical that you should use is specific to the type of weed it is to treat, so be sure to get positive weed identification before just throwing chemicals in the water. Baller_ RichardDoane Posted July 23, 2011 Baller_ Share Posted July 23, 2011 grass eating carp have taken care of all the Broho weeds, but it did take 3 seasons, and about 50 fish a year @ about $10. each

ski6
We use midstream here in South Africa, not sure if you can get this overseas. It works really well and quickly http://www.henchem.co.za/category.asp?CID=35&SID=52&TID=0&prodid=
