Baller Fine409 Posted March 7, 2012 Baller Posted March 7, 2012 Hey all....doing some research for my first drysuit purchase. I'm considering purchasing the O'Neil Boost through this website... http://www.activewake.com/oneill-boost-drysuit.html Would anyone suggest any other brands/models to look into? I'm trying to extend my skiing season up here in Minnesota by a couple months! Thanks everyone.....Dan
Baller 6balls Posted March 7, 2012 Baller Posted March 7, 2012 Bought a boost last year, my favorite drysuit to date. Have had various baggies over the years and felt too much drag. Have had various neo's including o'neil twice and they are comfy w/little drag but became semi dry in short order.
04196 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I have a Boost and only wore it a year, then moved to the Wileys below and like it much better, fits better and less bulk/drag, have three years on it and is still in great shape. I have also skied in my neighbors BARE Ultra (from Grizzly Sports below) and really liked it, liked it better than the Wiley and way better than the Boost, very comfortable. My next will either be the BARE or an Eagle. It is probably a personal preference but definately consider the BARE or and Eagle. In WA and we ski year round so comfort and staying dry are important. http://www.wileyski.com/shopproductdetail.asp?prodID=4078&catID=84 http://www.eaglesports.com/drysuits.aspx http://www.grizzly-sports.com/product_detail.cfm?CatID=22&PID=1249
Baller lakeaustinskier Posted March 7, 2012 Baller Posted March 7, 2012 I know people sometimes hate on O'Neil because they have the perception that they don't "support" our sport as much as other brands, but O'Neil sure does support their products. Just last week my ski partner had a drysuit that was leaking around the zipper and O'Neil just sent him a new suit without a hassle. I've also had stuff repaired by them free of charge without a hassle.
Essvar Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I just pulled the trigger on an Oneill Assault Hybrid suit. I have been using an Adrenaline baggy suit for the past 2 years which has worked fairly well but I am excited to try a neo-leg suit. Here is where I found the best price with free shipping. http://www.marine-products.com/oneill-assault-hybrid-drysuit-1779.html
Baller robscholl-OF Posted March 7, 2012 Baller Posted March 7, 2012 I got an Eagle bag suit with the zipper in the front. Very light weight and easy to put on and I can zip it myself. It by far is the best suit I have used. I am a North West skier and ski year round. I got mine through H2O Osmosis. Good price and customer service. OF
jaredH20 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 i ski in 50-60 degree water and have only ever skied with the O'Neil assault hybrid. Looking at getting a wetsuit this winter. So far have been looking at the O'Neil physco 2 or the mystic empire. What do you guys recommend for this water temp? Wetsuit or drystuit?
Essvar Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 @jaredH20 i ski in 50-60 degree water and have only ever skied with the O'Neil assault hybrid. How would you rate your Assault Hybrid for these conditions?
Essvar Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 This might be a little off topic, but am I the only freak who can operate a rear zipper solo?
Baller Chuck_Dickey Posted March 7, 2012 Baller Posted March 7, 2012 http://www.activewake.com/oneill-assault-hybrid-drysuit.html This is the one I use and love it. Then I switch to the Camaro suits which are very warm considering how really thin they are.
hogexpress Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I prefer the Assault Hybrid. Have had for 2 winters. Used Bare and Sahara in the past. IMO the Assault is the best of the three. Little drag and roomy top to layer underneath. We ski thru the winter here in SC with the water temps in mid to low 50's and it works great.
Baller thager Posted March 7, 2012 Baller Posted March 7, 2012 @ Essvar, I can operate the rear zip on my drysuit solo but I cheat a little by using a dog leash connected to the zipper loop. I had to figure it out on my own or cook to death since everyone disappeared. If the zip is sticky or stubborn I attach a little longer leash to a post and walk the zipper open or closed. Can't wait for my neighbors comments if they ever see this process!! They already think I'm nuts.
Baller Fine409 Posted March 7, 2012 Author Baller Posted March 7, 2012 Thanks for all of the responses everyone! I might be leaning towards the Assault now...and nice price at Active Wake!
Baller thager Posted March 7, 2012 Baller Posted March 7, 2012 I bet he would if I asked him. Good spotter. Growls if he doesn't like the pass. Most of the time he chases me up and down the shoreline. The rest of the time he sleeps. Same as having MS in the boat!
Baller greghayes Posted March 7, 2012 Baller Posted March 7, 2012 +1 for Oneill Assault - my first and only drysuit - but very satisfied after 3 seasons. Remember to use conditioner on the seals to keep a more watertight fit.
Baller skihart Posted March 8, 2012 Baller Posted March 8, 2012 I have the assault as well and it works great. Had a baggy suit prior to the Assault but it had too much drag for me for slalom. The Hybrid is the way to go.
Baller jedgell Posted March 9, 2012 Baller Posted March 9, 2012 My Oneil Assault, which is about 6 years old, has started to crack and leak a ton. The cracks are showing up in the Goretex material. I've been trying to patch with Aquaseal, which works, but there are so many leaks i cant keep up. Anyone else having this problem?
Baller DanE Posted March 9, 2012 Baller Posted March 9, 2012 Had my Oneill Assault four years now with no issues, great suit, watertight, comfy,but- try out the size before buing if you can. I felt just as some posters above you could go with one size smaller.
Baller Fine409 Posted March 9, 2012 Author Baller Posted March 9, 2012 I'm approx 5'11-6', and 175 pounds. Would you guys recommend a large size then based on your experiences?
Baller Killer Posted March 9, 2012 Baller Posted March 9, 2012 look into OS systems. have found they are of the best quality these days. still hand made in USA http://www.ossystems.com/surface/breeze/
Baller MJE Posted March 9, 2012 Baller Posted March 9, 2012 Ditto what @OB said. Barefoot International since '96. Replaced the seals once. Suit is indestructible.
Baller Steven_Haines Posted March 10, 2012 Baller Posted March 10, 2012 I've got a barefoot international that needs seals if anyone is interested. Not sure of the size until I dig it out but I'm 6' 195# great suit, I just got tired of skiing when its too cold for a shorty.
Baller ForrestGump Posted March 10, 2012 Baller Posted March 10, 2012 Eagle dry suit is great. I can layer the clothing I want under it to stay warm. Plus, front zip so very easy in and out.
Baller 6balls Posted March 11, 2012 Baller Posted March 11, 2012 I've got a BI, and I use it to swim the course line off the bottom in the spring in frigid water with lots of extra layering. Used it for skiing last year on a particularly cold day late season w/cold water...he had to add 20 lbs on PP classic due to the air drag. indestructable, dry as a bone, but too much drag for me to use for slalom.
DoctorJ Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 We've had an unseasonably long winter here in the NW and I'm thinking about getting the O'Neill Assault Drysuit. Do you think this would be warm enough for 45-50 degree water or should I check out some fullsuit options?
Baller vtjc Posted March 20, 2012 Baller Posted March 20, 2012 I skied Saturday in my O'Neill Assault air was in the 60's and the water still had some ice on it. I think its the best skiing suit available. I loaned it to a friend for when he skied and now he wants one. Jamie
Baller Fine409 Posted March 20, 2012 Author Baller Posted March 20, 2012 I ended up purchasing an O'Neil Assault thru Active Wake. They threw in a free HO life jacket also! Hoping to get out skiing this weekend since the lakes are now free of ice! :)
bb85025 Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Can be had for $390 here: swimoutlet.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=18114&Click=310393&gclid=CMOix5uF864CFSQCQAodjRufMQ
Baller SM Posted March 22, 2012 Baller Posted March 22, 2012 Brent seems to love his O'Neill drysuit. It really shows off the work he's been doing in the gym!
Baller_ The_MS Posted March 23, 2012 Baller_ Posted March 23, 2012 Brent looks like the Stay Puft Marshmallow man. Who you gonna call?
