Baller_ Wish Posted January 13, 2013 Baller_ Share Posted January 13, 2013 What @ShaneH said.... :-0. The 2 after the S in that skies name is NOT the required operating temperature by the way.
Baller Cam Posted January 13, 2013 Author Baller Share Posted January 13, 2013 Had two sets and survived, seven of us skied, four in wetsuits.

crashman
Nice! Are there any considerations in terms of the boat (? different weight oil) when running it in temps that cold?
Baller_ The_MS Posted January 14, 2013 Baller_ Share Posted January 14, 2013 @Cam 4 in wet suits? I am starting to think that the USAWS should include drug testing in its back ground checks.
Baller ScaredOfCorbets Posted January 15, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2013 oh, that 4 'C', not 'F'. That's a 'big' difference, just go ski and have fun. uh, isn't 0 C = solid ice?
Baller BraceMaker Posted January 15, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2013 @crashman - my engine manual does not specify oil weights for cold weather. Is yours open loop or closed loop cooling?
crashman
Mine is just a regular open loop gt-40; it seems like I recall the manual specifying different wt oil for air temp<50 degree F. I wasn't sure if there was anything else I needed to worry about beside my jingle jangles if I decide to take a ski when it's frigid.
Baller Cam Posted January 15, 2013 Author Baller Share Posted January 15, 2013 Living in Scotland we would have to consider changing the oil if the temperature was to get hot, we have an open loop cooling system and once warmed up temperatures are fine, we also run on LPG so have to make sure we don't let the the boat idle too long before it is warmed up or the gas will freeze. @MS the guys in wetsuits also use toe loops, I can't do that. Going out again tomorrow as long as the lake isn't frozen.
Supporting Member Than_Bogan Posted January 15, 2013 Supporting Member Share Posted January 15, 2013 He said air was 0C. But water requires significant loss of heat energy to transition to ice, so it can still be water at OC. Not below at standard pressure.

Baller ScaredOfCorbets Posted January 16, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 16, 2013 'He said air was 0C...' my mistake. I read it as 0 degrees C water. Need to get my eyes checked, or drink less.
Baller Cam Posted January 17, 2013 Author Baller Share Posted January 17, 2013 Yesterday air was 0 C and water 2 C but lake had frozen overnight, broke the ice up but it kept drifting into the course so no skiing.

Baller Cam Posted January 17, 2013 Author Baller Share Posted January 17, 2013 @Gloersen that just makes me jealous, I may be a Scot by birth but my ancestors were Spanish, I yearn for warm glassy water.
