Baller_ RichardDoane Posted April 7, 2013 Baller_ Share Posted April 7, 2013 @phil2360 - what kind of boat is that with the engine in backwards ?
Baller BraceMaker Posted April 7, 2013 Baller Share Posted April 7, 2013 Boat issue! Yikes. When my skiing is cut short with a boat issue - its usually more like an impeller, or a belt, or a failed safety switch.
Phil2360
@richarddoane, We're an ancient mob of convicts down here. Like to do things backwards, like spin the water the oppostite way down plugholes. You seriously haven't seen this configuration? Quite common down here. Think the original concept was keeping things more compact & dates back to when hull ranged in the 15' to 17' range. Clutch drive is off the timing end. Welcome to drop over for a look, you skills could come in handy....

Phil2360
750 hours, Head gasket blown between 3 & 5 and just begining to leak between 2 & 4. Dry cranking compression of 150-160 PSI on the other 4 cylinders that had no leaks. What are the opinions on the hours from those in the know? Baller_ RichardDoane Posted April 8, 2013 Baller_ Share Posted April 8, 2013 @phil2360 - smart guy puts new valves in those heads while they are off the engine, and have the machine shop kiss the mating surfaces with the rotary broach, clean/tap all the headbolt holes in the block and wire brush all the headbolts if you're going to re-use, and that block deck surface needs to be clean enough to eat off of before re-assembly or you're fired ! Phil2360
@richarddoane, They are definately off the the local head reco guy to have a bath, crack test, seats machined & surface machined. Didn't think of replacing the valves unless they needed it. Tending to think they might be OK with a light grind. Was thinking new lifters while it's down too. As far as the bottom end is concerned, with the compression where it is was thinking rings & bearings can wait a bit & be a planned winter project. Think this winters project is meant to be finishing the outdoor kitchen & Bbq area, concrete pathway down the side of the house, some landscaping & the other things that have been put off for "yet another weekend camped at the lake". Engine out for a full rebuild was probably not previously mentioned in the "do it in winter" projects.
Baller_ RichardDoane Posted April 8, 2013 Baller_ Share Posted April 8, 2013 every time you grind a valve it gets thinner, then more likely to "burn". your cylinder head guy should know if they are suitable for re-use, we never put new lifters on an old camshaft, always "cam and lifters"
Phil2360
Heads back from HeadCo. Valves & seats barely needed touching. Was quite amazed really. Guides a bit worn, but now fitted with K-Line guides. Seats re-ground & valves got a very slight grind. Crack tested, cleaned & surface ground. Now just need to clean up the block & other surfaces & reassemble. Really impressed with the condition of bore, cam & lifters considering this is a carby engine that has done 16 season & 750 hours. Always used a Castrol Edge 25w-50 & changed at 30 to 40 hours, depending on how the season was panning out. Looks like the maintenance schedule has paid off.
