Baller BrennanKMN Posted June 15, 2015 Baller Posted June 15, 2015 These are going to prove immensely helpful for me as I am teaching myself to trick. Thank you for posting this. I have been needing some good trick skiing for dummies videos for a while.
Baller JTW Posted June 16, 2015 Baller Posted June 16, 2015 These videos would be so useful for a beginner trick skier and I would love to see other more advanced tricks as well! Thank you (to the people who made this video) for dedicating your time to help others in the waterskiing community. Also thanks to @gsm_peter for posting this for everyone on BallOfSpray. :)
Baller BrennanKMN Posted June 16, 2015 Baller Posted June 16, 2015 As I started watching these I was noticing clues and by the end I realized that one of the hosts was the guy I bought my trick ski from on Ski-It-Again. Pretty cool!
buski Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 These are great. Thanks much for posting them and also to the creators. A lot of this is stuff seems like tribal knowledge to someone in a club with no trickers and I had found hard to find even with the internet. They did a great job capturing it and sharing to make it more accessible.
Baller gsm_peter Posted June 23, 2015 Author Baller Posted June 23, 2015 Thanks for many thanks ;) And yes a great tribute to the creators! I would like to thank them and inform that they are now on BOS but haven't had time to set up you tub account yet. Plan to do so! As a trick ski beginner I propose that we start a number of trick thread for 'one trick group at the time' discussions. For example the first group could cover SS, Back/Back Wraps and 360. Lets post progress, videos tips etc there to support each other. That could then be used for (video) support for each skier on our current level. More advanced skiers can then make separate group for Flips, Toe holds etc. Comments?
SirDukey Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 As a skier in South Africa I have been tricking for a while without even knowing what the names of the tricks are, I find tricking is great fun and would really find any information to be useful no matter how basic it seems. The number of people that I can get trick advice from is very few and far between down here.
Baller gsm_peter Posted April 25, 2016 Author Baller Posted April 25, 2016 More mini lessons (beginner level). http://www.robertsski.com/webpgws/wski.shtml
Baller eleeski Posted April 25, 2016 Baller Posted April 25, 2016 Interesting site. Good illustrations of the basics but missing some key tips. (Never lead TB with your shoulders! Turn the foot over to drive the trick. Nit picking, sorry.) Get exposed by the videos. Then get some real coaching from a ski school to tailor it to your needs. No matter how you go, it will take lots of fun hours on the water. Eric
Baller_ Wish Posted April 25, 2016 Baller_ Posted April 25, 2016 I do not know how I missed this thread originally but glad it has popped back up. NICE! Will be saving it to my favorites for sure.
Baller gsm_peter Posted April 25, 2016 Author Baller Posted April 25, 2016 @Wish Thanks. Please keep us updated of your trick ski successes! I have only one season of trick skiing. Started at age 57 is challenging. My one time best run was: SS, reverse SS, B, reverse B, O, reverse O. Goal for 2016 is to ski backwards and do some wakes.
Baller Nando Posted April 26, 2016 Baller Posted April 26, 2016 Hey! Those are my brother's ski buddies. I've skied with Chris a little and he's amazingly perceptive. Compulsive about coaching during the set, but really gets the details. Cool to see these guys here. Maybe I should study and get the old trick out again- more than twice this year...
Baller thager Posted April 27, 2016 Baller Posted April 27, 2016 @Nando Please take video! Still have Saucier tricks? I still have mine!
Baller Nando Posted April 27, 2016 Baller Posted April 27, 2016 thager, no one wants to see me trick- EVER. As for the Saucier tricks, mine were stolen years ago, along with one brother's Kahuna slalom and another's Kahuna wide trick and a bunch of other classic skis (Connelly Wide-Trak, EP Wingtip, Saucier slaloms, etc.) we had locked up at the lake over the winter.
Baller thager Posted April 27, 2016 Baller Posted April 27, 2016 Bummer!!!! I forgot I have Kahuna Jumpers too! Am trying to find a Saucier Slalom for the wall.
Baller gsm_peter Posted June 11, 2016 Author Baller Posted June 11, 2016 Maybe time to bump this thread again? Hope to see some Ballers post your trick videos this season. My trick ski seem unfortunately to have degraded during winter. The reverse O and reverse B keep on failing this season.... Hope for a quick recovery. :#
Baller eleeski Posted June 11, 2016 Baller Posted June 11, 2016 @gsm_peter As we do a trick more often, we forget some of the basics. We lean on the rope. We force rotation with our upper bodies. We hurry the trick. Back to basics! Give a pull to unload the rope. Level out the ski by loading the ball of the front foot. Lead the turn with the lower body or ski. Keep it slow and controlled. Sometimes just remembering these fundamentals is all you need - for any trick you are performing. Eric
Gus Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Here's an slightly past beginner level question/vid in the spirit of this thread: A single WO from wrapped position at the beginning of a run is relatively easy I find - probably the first WO to learn, from outside to inside. The helicopter. However, the rules state that a reverse trick must follow the original. But WO and Reverse, both from wrapped position are way too slow. So I'm working at WO from wrapped, inside to outside and then a handle pass reverse WO outside in. Getting the wrapped WO from inside to out consistent went quickly, I could almost feel the succesrate improving towards consistency as a couple of sessions went by. But getting the handle pass WO consistent appears to be a lot more work. Here's where I am: It looks ok, but I'm at a mere 20-25% successrate with the handlepass WO and its not improving as fast as the wrapped went. Probably just a matter of staying at it (and the trampoline on land). But tips are welcome. I'm already thinking of: - limiting the left-right movement ('think landing on top of the wake') - wait with jumping until the last moment, until you reach the top of the wake, I can feel how much that helps with getting air. I'm a bit uncertain about when to pull.. maybe that's where the inconsistency comes from. Same for 'where the rotation comes from' - some say 'drive it from your hips' and others say 'it comes from the handle pull'. I can feel the rotating power of driving it with your hips on land for sure. But I also tried jumping straight up on the trampoline and turn with just the handle and that also results in rotation. It seems to be a bit of both. And my diy pylon mount is not optimal yet, but that's another story.
Baller eleeski Posted September 12, 2018 Baller Posted September 12, 2018 @Gus Nice WO, R. Do not try to land on top of the wake. Unless it's the far wake. You need the air time and you need to go late. Make sure the foot has crossed the crest of the wake before starting any rotation. Rotate slowly from your hips. Do not jump for air. Load the front of the ski at the base of the wake and you will get launched into the air. Keep the legs straight for easier rotation. Keep the handle relatively high and your elbow bent. Pass the handle late (eventually you will want to wrap in - no handle pass at all). You need to gain on the boat a bit so work the handle in but don't lean on the rope to pull it in - subtle pressure on the rope. Don't lead with your eyes or upper body. Lead with your hips. Plenty of time to look for the boat after you land. RWO wrapped is a solid trick. Work the wrap and you can make it pretty fast. Pull massive slack, pass the handle to the wrapped hand, grab the webbing and take the slack shot. Quick! Keep working at it! Eric
Gus Posted September 13, 2018 Posted September 13, 2018 @eleeski First a WO inside to outside, landing wrapped in and then a quick helicopter is an alternative I considered. Or for a W5B at the end of a run right after two WO's it would be nice to land wrapped in from a WO (or from a W5F). But I'm hesitant about trying the wrapped in landing without release. Would you try learning it without release?
Gus Posted September 13, 2018 Posted September 13, 2018 @eleeski @Chef23 a robbins release - ok i'll get one (and a rope release as back-up) :)
Baller eleeski Posted September 14, 2018 Baller Posted September 14, 2018 I do wrap in hand tricks (and all my other hands) without a release. Just let go if you are in trouble. My brother always uses one. Whatever makes you comfortable. Play with all variations to see what feels best. Including counterspins. Hand off WOs are easier for me again the grain. Wrap in works for me best normal spin. Robbins releases rock! Comfortable to hold, solid attach but offering some feedback to the release operator. You can still get hurt with one but they are safest. Note, use a section of slalom rope or bigger diameter rope to hook into the Robbins release - the tiny spectra ropes get stuck too deep on the arm to generate enough release force. Eric
Baller dchristman Posted September 14, 2018 Baller Posted September 14, 2018 Search Youtube for 'cory 0-5000'. I came across this when someone was asking about videos when I was down at Cory's last year. Cory didn't object when I told him about it, but I'm still not posting the direct link due to copyright concerns. For best results, go ski with Cory! https://skicory.com/
Gus Posted September 14, 2018 Posted September 14, 2018 I once asked skicory if the tapes are available, like on DVD, or online purchase. But they are not. I'm curious about the 'super advanced' tape, would love to see that. Like how to do a W7F :)
Baller Chef23 Posted September 14, 2018 Baller Posted September 14, 2018 @dchristman @Gus I used to have a set of those on VHS and I am not sure what happened to them.
Baller dchristman Posted September 14, 2018 Baller Posted September 14, 2018 @gus here you go, 1 available. Only $225.99 World-Class-Trick-Clinic-VHS The 0-5000 video I referred to above contains both the basic and advanced videos.
Gus Posted September 14, 2018 Posted September 14, 2018 @dchristman i'd have to get an old VHS and an old TV as well :) First a robbins release.. Thanks.
Baller dchristman Posted September 15, 2018 Baller Posted September 15, 2018 @gus here's a very condensed version of the World Class Clinic, when hand passes required a little more hand-to-hand handle passing: The good news is you're half-way to the W7's with your WO's ;)
Baller dchristman Posted September 15, 2018 Baller Posted September 15, 2018 Let's compare Cory's run above to Adam's Nationals hand pass worth about 1000 points more with 1 less trick and no handle passing - which looks harder? http://videos.sproutvideo.com/embed/189ad0bc1c1be2c190/41430d0db4670e08
Baller eleeski Posted September 15, 2018 Baller Posted September 15, 2018 Wow! To both runs. But Cory's is more impressive. Too many flips in Adam's run (said that just to bother @Jody_Seal ). Actually, Cory only gets the nod because of the WL5F at the end - a different class of trick. Cory had them all, flips, ski lines, spins, surface turns and stepovers. The frantic speed of Cory also is amazing. Fun videos. Eric
Gus Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 @dchristman i've studied both in awe many times. Cory's run looks a lot more difficult to me. Somehow the flips look easy. But the flips with spins most probably are not.
Gus Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 btw when was the W7F 'upgraded' to 800 points? Before 87? I recently noticed in an old book 'guinness guide to waters skiing' that there were some changes.
Baller Chef23 Posted September 15, 2018 Baller Posted September 15, 2018 There used to be a Brett Wing instructional video on trick also. From my perspective it wasn't as good as Cory's stuff. I have a copy of it kicking around the house somewhere.
Gus Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 I tried to score both using current point system: Cory's run SL5F 550 B 60 W7B 480 R 480 BB 90 W5F 310 B W5F R 310 W7F 800 SLO 400 W5B 310 F 60 BFL 500 SL5B 550 WL5F 420 time LB LF 5320 Adam's run SL5B 550 SL5F 550 SLO 400 B 60 SLBB 450 F 60 FFL 800 BFLB 750 F 60 R 750 F BFL 500 B BFLBB 800 R 800 BB 90 R 90 6710
Baller fu_man Posted September 16, 2018 Baller Posted September 16, 2018 I can't say whether the flips are harder or not (maybe these pros just make them look easier), but I agree the old school pass looks more impressive. It's too bad the point values are weighted towards flips. If the point values were different or there were less flips allowed it might encourage people to put some old school tricks back in. Probably an argument for a different thread.
Baller chrislandy Posted September 20, 2018 Baller Posted September 20, 2018 The current scoring looks so skewed. Why is a front flip worth the same as a 900? and a double stepover 540 worth only 500, the same as a "simple" back flip. Also, how come the values have changed over the years, surely a trick is a trick at a value, otherwise you could just do the same set a few years apart and score higher ?
Baller mknippen Posted June 13, 2019 Baller Posted June 13, 2019 @gsm_peter I think this may be for me, and thank you! It's such a shame that these videos are all gone from YouTube. To the people who mentioned they know the guys in the video ( @BrennanKMN @Nando ) if there's a way that you can reach out (or connect me) I would love to help get these videos back online for the world to use. I'll gladly do all the work, I just need a connection! Thanks, Matthew
Baller gsm_peter Posted June 13, 2019 Author Baller Posted June 13, 2019 Look for corey 0 5000. Yes wrong spelling. Super great video.
Baller jercrane Posted June 20, 2019 Baller Posted June 20, 2019 oh man it looks like the original videos from this thread have been taken down. Does anyone by any chance have copies or a mirror?
MalaysianBaller Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 @jercrane, did you find the videos anywhere? thx
Baller_ Jody_Seal Posted June 24, 2019 Baller_ Posted June 24, 2019 Here are some recent examples of higher end trick skiing. There are lots of trick videos on youtube. even the ones that were posted on this thread. http://www.awsasouth.org/videos.html
Baller jercrane Posted June 24, 2019 Baller Posted June 24, 2019 @Jody_Seal @MalaysianBaller no I couldn’t find them. All I can find is more advanced videos and pro stuff on YouTube. I really like these videos because they were a great beginner progression. Just picked up a trick ski this summer and was going to start teaching my self. Oh well
Baller Chef23 Posted June 24, 2019 Baller Posted June 24, 2019 I think @mknippen has the videos if someone can help him get them posted somewhere online he would be open to putting them there.
Baller jercrane Posted June 24, 2019 Baller Posted June 24, 2019 @mknippen DM your email address and I will add you to a Dropbox folder for you to dump them in. I can then load them to a Youtube or Wistia account for public consumption.
Baller gsm_peter Posted June 24, 2019 Author Baller Posted June 24, 2019 @jercrane Thanks. Can you add the new links when available?
Baller mknippen Posted July 13, 2019 Baller Posted July 13, 2019 @Chef23 @jercrane I do not have them unfortunately. Really looking to get a copy though. If someone finds them, please let me know! I searched YouTube and Archive.org, nothing. Without finding the original uploader, I'm not sure we're going to get them back. :(
