Baller Nando Posted November 11, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 11, 2015 There's been some discussion of winterizing boats and as I was putting my ski stuff away for the season, I realized I must be much more anal retentive than normal skiers. Before I put my skis away for the winter, I: Measure and remove the fin. Remove the bindings. Clean the ski bottom.Wax the top sheet (I know, I know, but it takes about 30 seconds), fix any dings, check inserts. Clean and lubricate fin screws. Replace and re-measure the fin. Replace bindings and replace any bad binding screws. Other equipment gets a kind of going-over so it's ready when spring comes. What do others do? Oops- this was my first attempt at a poll and I left off some of the options, including "what's winter?"
Baller oldjeep Posted November 11, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 11, 2015 Mine are both in the bags hanging above the boat in my garage. Only the snow skis get to sleep inside, and that is only because the tuning bench is inside. Wax the topsheet, that is a real thing?
Baller david_ski Posted November 11, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 11, 2015 I lubricate all springs/latches on my Reflex hardshells at the beginning of the off-season (Dec-Feb). during the off-season after the new year, I take ski out and clean lake film off top of ski and check all screws/bolts. Baller_ The_MS Posted November 11, 2015 Baller_ Share Posted November 11, 2015 Toasty warm in my ski shop. 2 rear Wileys on the way to Wileys for rehab and 1 new Vapor front on the way.
Baller eleeski Posted November 11, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 11, 2015 You need to ski more. No winterizing. Just shake the spiders and scorpions out of the boots and vest in the spring. (Yes, the scorpion in my vest did sting me - but it didn't cure any diseases or make me ski better so now I check). Eric PS never wax a waterski. Baller thager Posted November 11, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 11, 2015 If not skiing ski is always in house. Wax top. Put in sock. Hang in workroom until trip south or spring. Whichever comes first... @Nando You need some TeePee!!
Baller OTF Posted November 12, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2015 I just throw mine in the yard and let the snow cover it, that way when @ms puts the bouys in the afternoon the ice goes out my ski is trained for cool temps
Baller A_B Posted November 12, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2015 If you take too good of care of your ski, it takes too long to buy a new one..
Baller GOODESkier Posted November 12, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2015 I probably treat my equipment nicer than most. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in my head. Great time to look stuff over, check bindings and ski and fin.
Baller Ed_Obermeier Posted November 12, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2015 @GOODESkier you obviously have too much spare time...
Members CaleBurdick
@eleeski When @AdamCord was still dialing in the art of resin transfer molding for the O'Brien Elite, he sent me a prototype that hadn't fully "wet out" so there was exposed carbon on the bottom of the ski that would expand when wet. Andy Mapple told me to just wax it. I rubbed some snow ski wax on and voila; it didn't absorb water anymore and didn't affect the way the ski rode either! Now, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't ever wax a normal ski bottom, or top(dings/scratches/fade give it character), but I don't think the surface of a ski has much effect on performance. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm way off base here. To stay on topic though....tried and true back up skis go in the basement for longevity. Current ski stays in the below freezing garage to earn its right to be used the next season. If it absorbed any water leading to delamination issues when said absorbed water expands then I don't want to be using it anyway...
Baller GAJ0004 Posted November 13, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 13, 2015 My boat garage is semi-heated so I just make sure everything is dry before it gets cold. I keep the ski in its case on specially made ski racks that line one wall of the garage.
Baller aupatking Posted November 13, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 13, 2015 I clean and lubricate my reflex binding system every day I get out of the water. Wash it down real good and make sure the screws are all looking good, and tight. Outside of that, there's about 3 weeks I won't ski this year. Baller eleeski Posted November 13, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 13, 2015 @CaleBurdick I've skied a couple skis with mold release on them and cleaned skis with a waxy cleaner (why do I clean things?). These skis have felt terrible. A quick scrubbing with Comet or Ajax noticeably changed the feel. Also, every mod that I've tried with a quickie paraffin shaping has not worked. However, it is good to hear of a successful use of wax - I can be a bit more open minded. What is this freezing thing you guys are talking about? Baller skihard Posted November 13, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 13, 2015 I had to choose the option of putting ski in bag and putting it away only because I'm fortunate enough to ski year round. SO it really never gets put away for very long! :)
Baller gsm_peter Posted November 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 16, 2015 Repair the wetsuite, gloves and vest. Glue and seving (spelling??) Wash all stuff including rope.
Baller swc5150 Posted November 16, 2015 Baller Share Posted November 16, 2015 Ski stays in my warm bedroom close. The rope gets thrown away so I'm never tempted to use it the next summer.
