Stupid or cool?

surprisingly safe other than the usual potential injuries from a barefoot face plant. theres no danger of a barefooter hitting his face on a barefoot boom and thats a lot closer to his face to begin with than the platform. if he caught a toe by the time his face was down near his feet the boat would have traveled at least 10 feet away.

Believe it or not, technically it's not stupid, as @mwetskier points out: you'll never hit the platform.

About 30 years ago I skied with a guy who instead of doing a swim-platform-step-off would do a swim-platform-jump-out (hop with both feet at the same time). Very freaky to watch. But again, despite the fears, you'll never hit the platform.

And no, at 40mph, the exhaust isn't coming out, under the platform, and then making a right-angle vertical turn to poison the skier with carbon monoxide ;-)

Growing up on a public lake we used to barefoot like that all the time. Regardless of the lake conditions it's the smoothest water around! Fell a few times but never even felt like you'd hit the platform. Only real risk if hitting the platform is when you're actually stepping on or off. Like someone else said, barefooters never hit the boom and you're much closer to that.

As far as exhaust, I'll bet the CO levels are far higher when wake surfing at slower speed.

Years ago we'd have occasion to trick ski with Sally Monnier and she would put on her trick ski on the platform. Once the boat was up to trick speed she'd step off the platform and her father Cecile would let out the rest of the rope. She'd ski an entire practice set typically without falling and her father would pull her back into the boat. It was obvious that they did this frequently.
