Baller Obrienslalom Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 If I ever find perfect glass at any site I ski at, I'll let you know! I'll take anything not killed by rollers. More on topic, my dad used to call it 'skiers ripple' and always claimed to prefer it.
Baller Orlando76 Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 I like texture. I seem to never ski as good on glass.
mikegile
Ripple. The glass feels so good but my knees don't like to bend.
Baller escmanaze Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 perfect glass. I don't even care if a ripple helps performance etc. whatever. Perfect glass is the summer version of powder in the winter. It just feels so incredible.

Baller BraceMaker Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 Bit of ripple. Our lake has a bit of heave to it when perfectly glassy. You feel it when driving more than skiing.
Baller 6balls Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 Glass gets me more excited when I see it
Baller slow Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 Glass. The ripple can turn into more than a ripple.
Baller LeonL Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 Glass is always nice to see, but my ski seems to feel a bit funny. After the first pass there's always a disturbed surface. I once knew a guy who when getting ready to ski, if the lake was glass, had the driver do a "down and back" as he didn't like that first glass pass. Baller Andre Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 Can't ski good on glass. Seems like i'm losing perception of depth in the turns! Pre gates needs a boob job!
Baller Jordan Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 I prefer to ski on a slight riffle but, seeing mirror like glass gets the juices flowing!
Baller B_S Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 I love glass, with that swish of the ski slicing through it, but I tend to ski better with slight ripple. I tell my wife, after my inevetible fall in the turn on glass, it's just too slippery! It sure is pretty though. Here's a shot of wifey getting ready in 47f air temp yesterday on some. Baller thager Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 Glass! Only lasts one pass anyway.
Baller dchristman Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 I love the first glass pass, but ripple for the harder passes.

Baller sunvalleylaw Posted September 13, 2017 Author Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 Ok, I will go now. I love glass. And glass on a nice warm day is a beautiful thing. But I am starting to think I love it even more when the water is warm. If the water is colder, a little just the tiniest bit of riffle seems to break up the surface tension or something. Or, that could be all hogwash and my imagination, but how I am feeling about it at the moment.
Baller Garn Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 Glass! There's nothing like skiing on perfect glass!!
Baller bananaron Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 Love glass....just skied this morning and made 2 runs.Nothing better then glass and no boats!!!!!
Baller UWSkier Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 I lose a bit of proprioception on glass, like I don't know exactly where my feet are under me. Love skiing in it but always tend to over-ski, like I'm not feeling something so maybe I need to be more intense. I ski a little better with some slight texture to the water. Can feel my feet so much better.
Baller h2onhk Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 this summer i would have taken anything other than high water, debris or white caps...such a crappy year in NW Ohio *rant over* I like a little ripple. keeps me honest and aggressive. i get lazy on my turns in pure glass
Baller B_S Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 @Andre how am I off topic, or was that just a fat finger?
dhofert
I never have, nor probably never will get the chance to ski on glass. I'm just happy to only have to deal with a few boats making rollers if I can make it out before 9am.
Baller chris55 Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 I love perfect glass, just the noise of the ski when turning....ssssshhh. It is the ultimum of waterski like powder in snow ski.
Baller skinut Posted September 13, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 13, 2017 I struggle skiing glass. Seems like I lose my perception at the buoy and have a tendency to fall over. I like to see it but I like a little ripple.

Baller RAWSki Posted September 14, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2017 Glass it's like fresh untracked powder or perfectly groomed snow. Doesn't last long so enjoy it while you can!
pregom
@Andre, I don't think I will ever see that perfect glass at my public lake... I have seen a few (very few!) mornings where it was close, but never that good!
Baller rodecon Posted September 14, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2017 I love the glass, but ski better with "grip ripples"

Baller Fam-man Posted September 14, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2017 The glass always makes me feel excited and I love it when you turn around and can see the boat path and where each of the turns are. Prefer the feel of the ski when there's some texture, although texture always turns into chop then whitecaps around here.
Baller scorban2 Posted September 14, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2017 As a mostly free skier, I love glass. Makes it feel like the boat has slowed down 2 mph, and allows me more time to understand what I'm doing when trying to fix something with technique. On the downside, wakes roll forever on glass, which is a pain when a fishing boat cuts across the lake perpendicular to our ski direction. The little ripples do a good job of disapating those. Especially true when you're tucked next to the shore in a relatively high wind, so that the lake is pretty choppy a few hundred foot off shore. Baller Sethro Posted September 14, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 14, 2017 We've always called it "slalom chop" and I much prefer that over glass for course skiing. However, free skiing on miles of river glass is where it's at
JAG
since our lake is surrounded by seawalls, it's a perpetual washing machine after the 1st pass so I've gotten used to my teeth chattering. :( I wouldn't know what glass is, other than it might be too slippery. dhofert
Closest I have ever seen to glass. I loved it. Too bad the video I took showed how poorly I skied. I did have fun so thats all that counts this late in the season.

Baller TallSkinnyGuy Posted September 15, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 15, 2017 Glass in a course is okay, though I prefer a slight ripple. Glass in open water I find very visually distracting -- it feels good but is difficult to ski due to not being able to clearly distinguish the surface of the water. TJO
I like a slight ripple for the feel of the water, but since that typically is accompanied by some wind, I'll take glass!
