Baller Lars Posted August 29, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 29, 2019 Since I couldn't find the info anywhere here, In case you missed it, here's Joel's crash to win the Worlds: (starts at 4:40) and here's a before and after xray of his foot https://www.instagram.com/p/B1q1qj5BumF/
Baller Chef23 Posted August 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2019 It makes me wonder if he had a boot that released if his foot would have been okay. Bummer to see Joel hurt he is an awesome guy an a great representative of the sport. At least he did it winning a world championship.

Baller_ Bruce_Butterfield Posted August 30, 2019 Baller_ Share Posted August 30, 2019 I think the point is that is a REALLY unusual type of break regardless of releasable/non-releasable binding. Of all the lower leg injuries posted here and others I know of, this is the only one I'm aware of with bones broken in that part of the foot. Yes brutal and unfortunate, but I think it can be chalked up to a freak fall that nothing could have realistically prevented. When a World title is on the line, any athlete of that caliber will pull out all the stops. If it was easy, they would call it Wakeboarding
Administrators Horton Posted August 30, 2019 Administrators Share Posted August 30, 2019 @Bruce_Butterfield I do not see how any of the currently available release systems(set up correctly) would not have prevented Joel's injuries. Baller_ Wish Posted August 30, 2019 Baller_ Share Posted August 30, 2019 @Horton yes, non releasable bootS 2001-2016. To make matters worse, I built everything I rode on. 15 years ZERO injury. But none of what I rode looked anything like Joel's. I'd never recommend to anyone to do what I did over the years. But I don't think my lack of injury over that big of a time span was just dumb luck.
Baller wawaskr Posted August 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2019 Interesting that his setup did not smash his tib, fib,or talus. Heal quick Joel!
Administrators Horton Posted August 30, 2019 Administrators Share Posted August 30, 2019 @wish I say you were lucky all those years. Joel did not get hurt for years until that one day when a release would have saved him. Baller bigskieridaho Posted August 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2019 Who cares, he won. If I could run my snow ski boot I would.
Baller_ Wish Posted August 30, 2019 Baller_ Share Posted August 30, 2019 Man, I need to play the lottery with that kind of luck ?. Was it his front foot with the snow ski boot or the rear?
Baller ScottScott Posted August 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2019 I bet he could mount that snow ski boot on a MOB
Baller Chef23 Posted August 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2019 @Wish from looking at the Xray it was his front foot Joel is a LFF skier. It does seem like a strange spot to have a break.
Baller MrJones Posted August 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2019 As a PT, I have to say that's a sweet repair of an odd set of fractures!
Baller John Brooks Posted August 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2019 I know those guys are dragging the boat, but did any of you notice the boat path, at least via the prop wash? When I saw Freddy’s slack at one ball, I then noticed the path.
Baller Lars Posted August 30, 2019 Author Baller Share Posted August 30, 2019 Happy to see it wasn't a joint injury, those metatarsal breaks should be easier to rehab than tib/fib. @John Brooks I'm not sure prop wash is a great indicator of boat path. At the end of the lake when I turn the boat and drop and look back down course, the prop wash is easily 10 feet to the left of the boat guides. Baller gregy Posted August 31, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2019 I went back and watched the video in slow motion. It looks like the heel of the boot separated from the ski and the boot folded in the middle. Its on the last roll when he's upside down with the ski tip in the water. Baller rico Posted August 31, 2019 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2019 @John Brooks I don’t believe this can be use for boat path. The back of the boat has to move for the pylon to stay in the middle
