Guest
Hi everyone, I noticed this evening that my ski got damaged during transit from the city to the lake. It looks like something fell on it in the car and nicked the top edge next to my front binding plate. It's a 22 Senate Graphite. I was thinking about using a Dremel (very lightly) to remove the damaged material and then patch with west marine epoxy. But before I do anything wanted to see if anyone has advice on how to proceed? Thx, Sean
Baller aupatking Posted August 30, 2022 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2022 Exacto knife to pick out loose material (remove as little as possible to be able to bring back to original shape). epoxy to fill. Clear packing tape pulled tight to retain shape and let cure
Baller Drago Posted August 30, 2022 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2022 Yep, I wouldn't dremmel it . Epoxy and a clamp, then light file after it's cured if necessary
Baller vtmecheng Posted August 30, 2022 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2022 What @Drago said. Use painters tape and clamps to squeeze it back together. Cover the clamp surfaces that touch the ski (and may get glue on them) this packing tape so they are less likely to stick.
Baller SHungerford Posted August 30, 2022 Author Baller Share Posted August 30, 2022 Thx for the advice, tbh I was nervous about using a Dremel, using an exacto and then packing tape and clamps sounds much better.
Baller_ swbca Posted August 30, 2022 Baller_ Share Posted August 30, 2022 I switched to JBWeld Original for my ski inserts and aluminum wheel curb rash repairs after watching this product comparison test. Its black which will blend with the ski. Gorilla Glue makes some good products but their epoxy is finicky about fully curing.
Baller_ DW Posted August 30, 2022 Baller_ Share Posted August 30, 2022 And a quick call to Radar for their suggestion.
Baller aupatking Posted August 30, 2022 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2022 I like using clamps, but on the nose of the ski they never want to stay on well. That’s how I figured out you can pull packing tape very tight, and it doesn’t form to the crack (dent) like a more pliable tape (duct tape). It holds the sharp edge line of the ski very well. Where yours is, clamps should work great. Also, wax paper between the epoxy and clamp or tape keeps it from sticking where you don’t want it to stick
Baller BraceMaker Posted August 30, 2022 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2022 Do pop off your binding and inspect across the top and bottom of ski there look for stress cracks under the plate.
Baller SHungerford Posted August 30, 2022 Author Baller Share Posted August 30, 2022 I found a good YouTube video while searching on how to repair a sidewall by Shuswap Ski and Board as well:
Baller SHungerford Posted August 30, 2022 Author Baller Share Posted August 30, 2022 @swbca good suggestion with J-B Weld, the dark grey / black should blend better
