  1. @BS74 the course is free for USAWS members. For why it's not free in general? Because things cost money. Servers, websites, research, resources, building the course itself, not to mention the staff that they keep to deal with the over 4,000 reports that they've received. It'd be great if the course were free for everyone, but people really hate being taxed, so they went another way with it.
  2. Let's just get this point out of the way, collegiate waterski easily translates to team skiing because schools are an easy way to group skiers together, and it's more difficult to get the numbers (somewhere between 10 and 30 skiers for 5 rounds in each event) outside of the college environment. Also, world's is another example of team scoring, but I am mostly asking for about AWSA tournaments where people are basically skiing as individuals. Now moving on. Why aren't teams more of a thing in 3-event tournaments? Teams and team points help less skilled skiers stay in the loop and continue skiing until they can become more "threatening" on the water. Skiing with and for other people can help encourage people to go to more tournaments, and adds another flavor for caring about how well other people ski. In my state (Ohio) there have been some forays into team formats as a secondary part of the tournaments. One year, the tournament organizer made teams the day of by taking skier's averages and grouping them into somewhat even teams. Then this past year, they took ski clubs and formed teams based off of those. Both of those formats added to the tournaments, and I think that they can lead to more growth in the sport if building teams for tournaments were more of a thing. Has their been wide adoption of team scoring in the past? What challenges and opportunities does using a team format provide?
  3. Have you called your local UPS, USPS, or FedEx? I bought some jumpers on ski-it-again, and the rate that I found on the online calculator was huge, something close to $400, but when the person shipped it, he somehow got it down to under $100
  4. This was the first Masters that I watched. Great tournament overall, but I'm just wondering, is this how it usually goes score-wise? It was a lot of amazing skiing, but the scores seemed super low compared to what I have seen in other broadcasted tournaments (I was shocked that the winning jump was under 230, and in Men's Slalom none of the finalists ran 41). Were the conditions suspect or something? I'm sorry if that's an ignorant question, or offensive to the amazing skiers who competed.
  5. After a short break, I am back to publishing interviews! For this episode, I sat down with Paula Jaramillo from UCLA. We discussed what it is like to be an international skier in the NCWSA, how college tournaments compare to the ones in Colombia, and what it was like to win the NCWSA D2 Overall Title! You can find UCLA's team on instagram: @UCLAWaterski You can find highlights on instagram: @WeLoveCollegeWaterski https://www.instagram.com/tv/CPJStpsAV5N/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link You can find the audio versions of the podcast on: Spotify, Apple and Google Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/we-love-college-waterski/id1544822419 https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy80NDM0YjBiOC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw==
  6. This week on We Love College Waterski we have a special episode! Guest Host Zoe Engle (from the University of Michigan) put together a panel of some of the amazing women who lead waterski teams across the country! They talk all about their experiences joining waterski teams, their inspirations, how they've perceived waterski culture, and much much more! This is honestly my favorite episode to date, it's an hour long, but it is absolutely packed with great content, take some time, sit down, and listen to this great panel! There were so many great things from this panel that I split the highlights into two videos! 7. @Jody_Seal You've made the claim a few times in this thread, but the USOC is an independent entity that gets no funding from the US government. It is NOT a government entity
  8. @jlittle the snowski point is not a good comparison at all. There's no requirement to have safesport to waterski on a lake, river, or wherever you decide to drop a boat, just like there's no requirement to have safesport to go down a mountain. There is however a requirement from US Ski and Snowboard for athletes over 18 to be Safesport trained, similar to the rules set out by USAWS. and I'm sorry for you still being tagged in this part of the comment, but I want to avoid double posting. A big theme that I see in this thread is "personal responsibility". Are we really going to expect a 13 year old to take the personal responsibility to not be groomed by a trusted coach or adult? Is it their fault that abuse happens? no. Pushing the responsibility onto them is reckless and is not as simple as "don't get abused". If it were that simple would we be hearing about Nassar and Sandusky? Nobody chooses to get abused. And if someone is going to come and say that it's the parent's responsibility to prevent abuse, I'll say that while yes they absolutely have a large role in it, they cannot be everywhere at once. Hell, even if a parent at a tournament decided to have their kid on a literal leash (which is incredibly unreasonable, but hey, if we're playing the slippery slope game, might as well take it the other way), they would still be away from them during their set, at which point the community being better trained to be aware of possible issues can prevent problems that could occur, and stop kids from being abused.
  9. I wonder how much of that spike is people getting into watersports compared to upgrading previous boats?
  10. For this week on We Love College Waterski, I sat down with Zoe Engle from the University of Michigan to talk all about her team. we briefly discussed MCWSA Winter Conference, then had a long conversation about how they've built their team to have 50 active members! We also talked about developing leadership teams within waterski teams. This is a long episode, but it is well worth watching the full thing and taking notes to improve your teams! 11. One thing that I think has been very overlooked in this discussion is the athletes that Safesport is supposed to protect. The program is super important to a lot of young athletes and it only works is everyone buys into it, or at the very least it's principles. Last month during the MCWSA Captains meeting, there was an amendment that added something with Safesport to the bylaws, it passed quickly and unanimously because we all saw it as an important thing to protect our teammates/athletes. I've seen clear safesport violations get brushed off at tournaments because people don't think its a big deal, or are too uncomfortable to confront it. There's safety in having many more skiers be apart of the program, and honestly using slippery slope and other strawman arguments against it really doesn't approach an issue with the program itself.
  12. @Bruce_Butterfield the training is all about recognition and prevention. Its not about teaching the 99% not to be predators (although there is a small section that is basically "don't touch kids"), it's about getting them to recognize hidden signs of abuse and effectively deal with those situations. It's a hell of a lot harder to be a scumbag when everyone around you can actively recognize it happening and know what to do. It's kinda like having everyone CPR/First Aid Certified. Will it be useful most of the time? No. But the second someone starts drowning, you have 50 people on shore who know exactly what to do And like others have said, its 45min-1hr of videos and questions to keep young athletes safe
  13. This week on We Love College Waterski, I sat down with four members of Iowa State's Waterski Team! We discussed their traditions, how they practice, and what it's like to ski in the Great Plains Conference! 14. @6balls absolutely on the barefooter. It was his very first time on the boom, so naturally I pulled out the camera and hoped for something funny
  15. This year I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to make a video for Midwest Collegiate Winter Conference. I did my best (with super limited video sources) to capture why collegiate waterskiers ski, but I think i managed to cover a lot of it. In this video you have: slalom, trick, jump, wakeboarding, surfing, and barefooting, along with a lot of the off water fun that makes College ski college ski. Hope that you like the video! And bug shout out to the following teams who contributed footage: Ohio University Iowa State Illinois Kansas State University of Cincinnati Notre Dame
  16. This week on We Love College Waterski, I gathered skiers from across the country to participate in a collegiate waterski round table. The Midwest representative was from Grand Valley State University, Auburn represented the SAC, Oklahoma State returned to represent the South Central Region. We talked about what makes teams succeed, fundraising, practice tips, and much more! You can find these teams on instagram: @gv.waterski.wakeboard @auburnwaterski @cowboy_waterski Episode Highlights are also available on instagram: @WeLoveCollegeWaterski https://www.instagram.com/p/CMlCPCwhavR/ The audio version of the podcast is available on Spotify, Apple, and Google Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/we-love-college-waterski/id1544822419 https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy80NDM0YjBiOC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw==

  19. @AmandaLR thanks for the listen!! They were a fun group to talk to!
  20. @Luzz just wondering, have you ever thought about talking to someone involved with Adaptive Waterskiing? I feel like that's a large part of the sport that often gets over looked when talking about skiing
  21. This week on We Love College Waterski, I sat down with three members of the Western Michigan Waterski Team! We talked all about how their team runs, their favorite events, and some of their more unique traditions! 24. Normally I keep these interviews in their one continuous thread, but this one was too good not to make its own discussion for. Dorien was nice enough to sit down with me for a full hour to talk about anything an everything related to skiing. This interview has so many great bits that I honestly think its well worth checking out. This week on "We Love College Waterski" I talked to Dorien Llewellyn, who at the time of recording was the NUMBER 1 Overall Skier in the world! We talked about potential growth, com-peting, College skiing vs professional, waterski tips, first jumps, sponsors in skiing (Redbull and Akquire), and much more!. There is a lot covered in this interview, so please check out the time stamps if you do not have the time to watch the full hour interview: You can find Dorien on Instagram @Dorienllewellyn Interview Highlights: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CLa_VU-B-St/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link You can find the video version on Youtube, and the audio version on Spotify, Apple, and Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/we-love-college-waterski/id1544822419 https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy80NDM0YjBiOC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw==
