  1. Dory's are solid boats. A friend had a 13/14' ftr when we were kids. @skibrain, most of my friends and I learned to ski behind a 13' Whaler with a 20hp Johnson. No wake, no problems. Learned to get up on a slalom behind our 68 14' MFG Corvette II with a 67 60hp Evinrude V4 that hauled a !!!
  2. Any thoughts on the A3 vs S2? I am pretty sure HO is the way I'm going. Also any word on the Apex boots?
  3. I've been riding a HO Phanton with dbl Animals for 12 seasons. Was on a HO VTX for 7 seasons before that. I average about 20 ski days and about 25 sets per season. Kids are in high school and travel softball and basketball programs so our schedule has been tight, through the end of July last two summers, and probably will be for three more summers after this year. Anyway, I'm pretty easy on my ski. 52 years old, 15 to 32 off @ 34. I'm leaning towards a red A3 with f & r Apex boots. Does it make sense, or should I consider the Strada or possibly the Quest? With such a limited schedule not really able to or interested in testing skis. Baller's thoughts would be appreciated.
  4. @Horton I like that thought, "good ski loyal". I will watch for this and other threads about new skis. Thanks
  5. @Horton very positive comments so far. I'm considering a new ski / binding package this spring and liked what I have read about the D3 line. A rep from another ski co. said I may not like the feel of D3 after being on another single co. skis since the mid 90's. Does this make sense? I will be watching your reviews and the ballers comments closely this spring. Happy Easter!
  6. Anyone tried them?
  7. Just google email, but really just use my work email address. No time for face or twit.
  8. imo 91 - 94 best wakes ever. I don't worry about spray. Very happy to run a couple - 32 passes in my short season which is about 10 weeks and 2 sets a week.
  9. Nice list of skis Mr Horton. I am considering updating my ski this year and will be checking your reviews closely. Here's my ski timeline: Obrien Competitor (wood); EP Comp X2; Connelly Concept; HO VTX, HO Phanton. I'm leaning towards an HO (xl, s2, a3) and I like the look of the Apex boots. I'll need to get Dave Spencer to agree to set it up for me though. He set up my Phantom in 2001 and I have not changed it since.
  10. Terry has some good spots in the West Coast Slalom instructional video.
  11. When I first started skiing the course I owned a Glastron V164. 16ft Aqualift hull with a 140hp Volvo IO. Super flat. Before that I had a GT 150 with a 115hp Johnson and before that a Jetflight 143 with a 70hp 'rude. Both were fast and had zero wake. After the Glastrons I bought a 16ft Checkmate with a 140hp Suzuki - tiny wake. Our current boat is a 92 PS 190. Nice wake with a little bump at 22. One buddy's 97 PS 190 is nice too with a bit smaller 22 bump. Two buddy's have Flightcraft XLTOB's with 200hp Mariners. Nice wakes just a little crisper than the MC's.
  12. I'm 52. Grew up in southern NJ. Learned to ski with friends behind a 13' Whaler with a 20hp on the Great Egg Harbor Bay. Free skied on the Great Egg rivers and coves for 15 years until I saw an add for the 1989 Garden State Games, NJ's version of the Olympics, which included 3 event waterskiing. Never before seeing a course I found an add for Jimmy Durham's Ski School in SC and went for three days of training for the Garden State Slalom Championships. My first tourney ended after 1 bouy, but I was hooked immediately, almost like I started a new sport. Rene, Duram's slalom instructor told me about Spencer's in Owego NY. Went to ski with David the next weekend. That became my training site. I skied at Spencer's many times each of the next 16 years. David and that location changed my life for sure. I was lucky to ski two years with the Berkeley and Marin crews in CA. Found them while skiing with Mike Syderhoud on Shasta. Since 1999 I've been very lucky to be skiing with the awsome crew of Randy, Dan and John at Jack's in CT, a slalom skiers dream pond. Above all I must thank my wife and kids for putting up with my obsession, and my parents for helping me get started!
  13. David Spencer Mike Syderhoud My ski buds at Jack's. May we push each other into -35 this year!
  14. 2001 Phanton Carbon. Still feels great when I'm skiing well.
  15. We bought our 92 Prostar 190 in '05 with 1000 hrs. It still looks and pulls us fine From 15 to 35 at 1350 hrs
  16. Just want to clarify m y previous comment. I am not opposed to overseas manufacturing. My wife and I drive foriegn cars.I am leaning towards a Senate C and thought it would add to the cool factor if I could tell my buddies it was made at the lake.
  17. Thank you. I really meeant to say under the watchfull eye of the RadaR team at the RadaR lab at RadaR lake.
  18. Are the SenateC and Strada boots made in the USA?
  19. I skied in Berkeley back in 94 / 95. Al was the first person I met. He got me into the rotation and hooked up with a few skiers.I still have Al's Novice Nationals and 4th of July Novice T-shirts. A true spirit. Happy Birthday and many more Al!
