Baller Not_The_Pug Posted December 1, 2011 Baller Share Posted December 1, 2011 Just want to make sure it is ok to replace the starter on my 01 Nautique with an automotive one from the local parts store? I wouldn't think that there is something special for marine application. But just want to check with the experts on here. Thanks, Kevin

Baller PBD Posted December 1, 2011 Baller Share Posted December 1, 2011 Isn't there a marine modification on the starters to prevent potential sparks?
Baller Not_The_Pug Posted December 1, 2011 Author Baller Share Posted December 1, 2011 Motor in the boat is a GT-40.
Baller A_B Posted December 1, 2011 Baller Share Posted December 1, 2011 I thought they were encapsulated somehow, to prevent sparks as noted by PBD, and to keep water out... Not 100% sure, but was told that somewhere in the past 52 years.
Baller Hugh Nichols Posted December 1, 2011 Baller Share Posted December 1, 2011 They are marine'izd. If you are not in a hurry take the starter shop. They can rebuild that one for you. If they can't I would call Discount Inboard Marine.......
skicoug
The marine starters are not too expensive.......but be sure it is not just the solenoid.....it costs $20 and is real easy to replace. It is mounted on the bracket that holds all the circuit breakers and computer module at the back of the motor....not on the starter. I made this mistake this summer....replaced starter and still nothing....ended up being the solenoid. Good luck.
Baller_ Jody_Seal Posted December 1, 2011 Baller_ Share Posted December 1, 2011 Please don't put an automotive starter on your boat as yea their is a big difference between automotive and Marine. Namely the marine is "ignition protected"! You run your motor under enclosed conditions. most all of the electrical components such as Distributor, alternator, Starter and a few others are "ignition protected" . If you value the safety of you and those you ski with You will provide them with the safest environment you can for you and their skiing enjoyment. Put the right part on. PCM part # RA122014 About $250.00 shipped!
Baller_ RichardDoane Posted December 2, 2011 Baller_ Share Posted December 2, 2011 Kevin - tell your wife if she'd buy a new boat, it'll come with a new starter, and ZO !
Baller skiep Posted December 2, 2011 Baller Share Posted December 2, 2011 I think it's reverse rotation!!!Keith
Baller_ Jody_Seal Posted December 2, 2011 Baller_ Share Posted December 2, 2011 No it is not a reverse rotation on a GT-40 engine. The transmission counter rotates and sets up a right rotation at the prop shaft.

Baller_ DW Posted December 2, 2011 Baller_ Share Posted December 2, 2011 Not only are the electrical components "marinized" to reduce/eliminate spark concerns but the fuel systems are also set up to minimize vapor build up under the engine cover. Baller Not_The_Pug Posted December 2, 2011 Author Baller Share Posted December 2, 2011 Richard, Already have approval for the new boat. Just need to sell this one first. Kevin
Baller brody Posted December 3, 2011 Baller Share Posted December 3, 2011 I replaced my starter with an automotive one in the past. It works just fine, BUT.... there is a big difference between them as posted above. My insurance guy, who is also a good friend told me if anything happens insurance wouldnt cover it, so I'd say its not worth it. Just my 2 cents
Baller_ RichardDoane Posted December 3, 2011 Baller_ Share Posted December 3, 2011 Kevin - I'll take it in trade, call me @ the shop, Stef will really like the Trick wake, and the 6.0 will add yards to your Jump PB !
