Administrators Horton Posted February 14, 2012 Administrators Share Posted February 14, 2012 Since I run this site get some strange phone calls and e-mails about things vaguely water ski related. Today's call was about insurance. Not just insurance on the skiing but the boats & the property in general. Can you guys shed some light on the subject? Baller_ RichardDoane Posted February 14, 2012 Baller_ Share Posted February 14, 2012 Global Marine is the insurance carrier of choice (mine) for doing the promo thing. They understand the demonstrator deal and tournament use issues.
boarditup
Global has the best and only policy that fully covers tournament use. It is relatively inexpensive and they are easy to work with. I have an umbrella policy through my homeowners that kicks in above my boat and auto limits that will protect me if the numbers get big. Ski lake insurance can be written by many different carriers. You typically need to have specific language for tournament or competition use. My lake is run as a site condo, so we get very good insurance rates. Baller A_B Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 We have general coverage for the land and water and use the AWSA insurance for the club when we hold tournaments. The practice coverage use to be good, but the documentation requirements seems a little crazy now.
Baller danbirch Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 @richarddoane Have you ever compared premium prices between Global Marine and Boat US? Last time I checked, Boat US was less $ for more coverage.
Baller Ed_Obermeier Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 Last time I checked Global was lower. Difference in boats perhaps?
Baller_ RichardDoane Posted February 14, 2012 Baller_ Share Posted February 14, 2012 @danbirch - I'll get matching quotes from both and will report back, have until the end of April so there's plenty of time
Baller jdarwin Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 I have been with Ski Safe since the early 90's. Still a great price and the coverage for promos is second to none.
Baller danbirch Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 The last time I checked, Boat US was cheaper. I pay $247/yr.(which includes a $24 "club" fee) for a 300k policy. (2007 MC TT). If yours is cheaper, I'd love to know. One thing I just found out, was that a skier was recently turned down for boat insurance based on him getting 2 speeding tickets (in his car). I didn't realize they check (and base) your boating insurance on your DMV records.
Baller_ The_MS Posted February 14, 2012 Baller_ Share Posted February 14, 2012 Forget cheapo. Has anyone had any claim issues with the above mentioned outfits? If they are cheap and have good service fine but cheap in that industry is not always good. I used Ski Safe for years but never had to test it. As far as the club insurance through USA, has anyone tested it and had success?
Baller danbirch Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 @MS, how can you criticize it if you haven't done any research? I have, and it is very good insurance. They are not a small company. Ski Safe claims to have 300k policy holders, Boat US currently has 500k, and has been in business since 1966. (I used to use Ski Safe). Global Marine doesn't advertise how long they've been in business, nor how many policy holders they have.
Baller jdarwin Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 I did have a claim w/ Ski Safe many years ago - very good claims service IMO.
Baller_ The_MS Posted February 14, 2012 Baller_ Share Posted February 14, 2012 @DB, I am not saying that any of the above are good or bad. Just looking for anyone that may have some stories to tell.
Baller danbirch Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 I had a claim, and Boat US did a great job. The other companies mentioned are very good as well. Since the companies are all legit, I turn to price and coverage offered to decide.
Baller_ The_MS Posted February 14, 2012 Baller_ Share Posted February 14, 2012 I read something on the PN forum a few years back about Gbl Marine not covering a boat stored at a storage facility that was in a fire and they pulled some very small language from page 300 and the guy was out of luck. Not saying that GM is bad, but make sure you are asking questions after the price quotes.
Baller_ Jody_Seal Posted February 14, 2012 Baller_ Share Posted February 14, 2012 I have been with Ski Safe or many years. When Global came on the scene I checked out their premiums and it was going to be $150.00 more a year for less coverage than what I have to carry for my needs. I stuck with Ski Safe. Baller ForrestGump Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 I had a claim with Ski Safe when we struck a submerged log in my 3 week old Nautique. $4000. Called SS, dropped it off at dealer next day, 3 weeks later pick it up good as new. Easier than dealing with my auto insurance when my truck was stolen, that's for sure. Baller Ed_Obermeier Posted February 14, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 14, 2012 I thought Global (which also lists the name ACE Recreational Marine Insurance on my policy paperwork) WAS Ski Safe. Missed something somewhere I guess... Anyway, I had a claim 2 years ago, hit a submerged log at about 30 mph, late in the season fortunately. $4700 claim, they handled it in what I thought was a timely manner and didn't jack up my insurance the following season or since. I'm happy with them and also the repairs, can't tell anything ever happened except for the new looking prop and prop shaft. This year paying $267 for $27K policy with $300K liability etc which also carries the standard USAWS endorsement.
Baller_ RichardDoane Posted February 14, 2012 Baller_ Share Posted February 14, 2012 the promo thing needs $500K in liability, but for a few dollars more I've been increasing it to $1M, you never know when someone like @MS may hit the "ROCKS"

Baller thager Posted February 15, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 15, 2012 I just changed to Global. I was SkiSafe for many years but got too expensive for way less coverage. Jennifer Franzoni has been great to work with. Actual customer service!

Baller rwskier Posted February 15, 2012 Baller Share Posted February 15, 2012 @lpskier any insurance is under insurance. its incredible how little the coverage is that they are laying out there.
