Baller klindy Posted October 15, 2013 Baller Posted October 15, 2013 Anybody have any better ideas to attach the boot to the plate? I tore to front boot loose twice yesterday. The extra large slots and relatively soft plastic coupled with the minimal plate contact and narrow spaced screws makes for a weak connection. Are the boots ABS plastic or something else? I could weld some plastic to the shell if I knew what plastic it is.
Baller BraceMaker Posted October 15, 2013 Baller Posted October 15, 2013 You'd probably be better off making some form backing washer than trying to weld the plastic. I think the shells are more similar to nylon.
Baller KcSwerver Posted October 15, 2013 Baller Posted October 15, 2013 I heard the best way to repair powershells is with a reflex system
Baller KcSwerver Posted October 15, 2013 Baller Posted October 15, 2013 If all else fails shoot me a note. I have an extra pair.
Baller ForrestGump Posted October 15, 2013 Baller Posted October 15, 2013 You could have Erb make some 1 piece T nuts that bridge both holes.
Baller klindy Posted October 15, 2013 Author Baller Posted October 15, 2013 Yeah - Somehow I pulled the heel through the washers and repaired it onsite. Second set hit a buoy and plate came off the ski and front boot came clear off the plate. Hard fall for sure. Even bent the washers and t-nuts on the front side. I haven't had any trouble in two years with it until then. I always thought the way they are attached to the plate is the weakest link. I was able to repair things pretty well. I made an thin aluminum 'plate' which fits inside the boot which makes it impossible to pull the washers through the plastic. We'll see how it holds up. For what it's worth, the boot can't be PVC or ABS since it's not affected by either solvent.
Baller eleeski Posted October 15, 2013 Baller Posted October 15, 2013 @klindy Attaching the shells is a challenge. There is a lot of load on the plastic. The big washer plate is your best bet. I break a couple of shells a year. Glassing in a heel cup didn't work that well as a repair. The shells smell like polyethylene but it is probably a special formula. Plastic welding hasn't worked well. My latest repair used material from an old shell and welded in some metal screen. I'll see how it works - when my hip heals. Eric
Baller Ed_Johnson Posted October 15, 2013 Baller Posted October 15, 2013 The first things I do with New Shells is to cut down the bottom cuff in the back of both boots and install the largest stainless washers I can at the four base points in each boot....Been doing this over ten years with no problems.
Baller skiep Posted October 15, 2013 Baller Posted October 15, 2013 A man has to do what a man has to do in a tournament!!
Baller klindy Posted October 15, 2013 Author Baller Posted October 15, 2013 @skiep nice repair job! I've never seen one split open like that before.
Baller Ed_Johnson Posted October 16, 2013 Baller Posted October 16, 2013 Had one split like that once and held it back together with Gorilla Tape till a new one arrived. Worked great by the way.
Baller PatM Posted October 17, 2013 Baller Posted October 17, 2013 I did the same thing with zip ties. Worked great. Zip ties and duck tape makes the world go 'round.
