That little picture is one of the most extreme demonstrations of a signal-theory phenomenon called "aliasing" that I have ever seen. Basically, when sampling a signal too aggressively, it is possible not only to destroy some of the original signal (kind of obvious), but also to create new features (not at all obvious). Usually, these features manifest as weird "visual artifacts." But apparently, they sometimes transform an average looking man who is upside down into a hot female who is right-side up.
