Baller WBLskier Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 I need to add a trailer hitch to our 2014 Acura MDX. We are in St. Paul MN area. Any suggestions on where to go. Dealer can do it but seems expensive. Thx.

Baller Ski_Dad Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 not sure what you are hauling - but you can get a nice class III hitch on e-trailer and bolt it on yourself for about 200.00 That what we did to our Honda. We tow with a Honda pilot and it's rated for 4500 lbs - but check your year b/c Honda has moved that number all over the place from 2000 to 5000 depending on some unknown factor. E-trailer also makes a 4 pin wiring harnesses that just plug in. If you need 5 pin you have to get more creative or have someone else do it. Baller Zoro957 Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 I would avoid U-Haul, at least for the electrical work. They used a cheap scotch lock on mine and it took out my entire electrical system.
Baller BraceMaker Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 @Zoro957 that's a plug and play adapter for Acura no splicing needed as they have a port to the factory harness.
Baller oldjeep Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 Buy a wrench and install it? Most hitch installs are pretty simple these days.
Baller JonB Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 etrailer.com also has great "how to" videos that are good to watch.
Baller Chef23 Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 I have used Uhaul in the past with good results.
Baller foxriverat Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 Pretty hard to beat etrailer. Very easy to install. https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitch/Acura/MDX/2014/C13146.html?vehicleid=201419723
Baller Lars Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 Whatever you decide I would make sure you get the OEM kit. The aftermarket ones tend to install below the bumper whereas the OEM ones are usually integrated into the bumper. Below the bumper would barely be off the ground. OR you could always DIY :) Here I found a step by step video:
Baller Orlando76 Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 @Zoro957 I had Uhaul hook up a brake controller and 7pin connector on a truck I had. Nightmare that never really got fixed. I’ll never go back.
shansen345
Does the 2014 MDX have a trans cooler? I'd look into one of those as well if it doesn't. I drive a 2005 and it has an aftermarket Curt tow hitch on it.
Baller BrennanKMN Posted April 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 4, 2018 Buy it yourself and install. Pretty simple. Rent a torque wrench from a local auto parts store. If you are in a bind PM me and I'll loan you mine.
Baller vtmecheng Posted April 5, 2018 Baller Share Posted April 5, 2018 Don't worry about how low it hangs. From pics online it looks like the hitch won't be any lower than your exhaust pipes. You can get a Curt on sale from etrailer.com for $138 and it looks like the thing just bolts right up. No brainer to me if you are at all able to turn a wrench and have someone who can help hold the thing up (the extra set of hands helps a lot). I've used etrailer a few times now and have no complaints.
