Diesel 300hp outboards. Hmmm

Open for thoughts. Just found it interesting that so much torque can be stuffed in an outboard. Could the motor be configured to be placed in a dd ski boat? Lighter? If configured correctly, could an outboard ski boat make a come back as a slalom tug? Reality says no ..but interesting.

Twin turbos - would that affect a pull through the course? Any current tugs have a turbo??

Sounds great but I believe too much and too responsive for slalom. Many years ago the pro tour used 225 OB master craft for jump because of the quick response and torque.

@Rednucleus these are all 4 stroke and should have DEF so there should not be the ugly oil smell.

@Rednucleus I've heard that if you use bio fuel made from McDonald's cooking grease the fumes smell like french fries. Problem solved. :)

@jjackkrash I don’t see a weight spec for cox. Big gas outboards are 530-580# (includes lower unit). 5.7 L marinized V8 850-900# right?

@skibrain, there were some really heavy diesel outboards at the last boat show, over 1000 lbs. I think the one in the link is in the same neighborhood as the 5.7L, i.e., pushing or around 900 lbs. depending on the shaft. But all the weight is hanging off the back end instead of in the middle of the boat. It is mounted in a worse place than even a v-drive for skiing/wake purposes. It might be good for a surf/wake boat.

@jjackkrash I don't think they would be safe for surfing as it might be possible to fall into the prop. Personally, if I was in the market for a 300 hp outboard, I'd only look at an Evinrude etec. I love my 150 HO etec!

Other negative is you would have to get and dispense diesel fuel which i recall to be stinky and messier than gas.

@Rednucleus My day job is motorcoaches...if they are using diesels with DEF, which I would be shocked if they weren't, they are pretty quiet, very clean, and expensive to maintain and repair.
