  1. From the man himself, here is the !
  2. @Horton - when is the next Distance from Center episode coming out? your comment is too much of a teaser... Also, if that's where we'll have the big reveal on Freddie, should this episode be named Distance from Centre?
  3. As you can see, there are many opinions and many factors to consider (boat, driver, one foot in vs 2 feet in, etc). You’ll have to experiment and try to figure out how to make the laws of physics work to your advantage. Use google and YouTube as much as possible, have someone take a video of you and study it (post it here if you want). Personally, this site helped me a lot. It’s a journey, persevere and you’ll get there.
  4. @ShaunT - I heard the same thing at our ski club.
  5. About your tendency of cartwheeling with RFF, it’s possible your boot position on the ski might need to be adjusted.
  6. I agree with @vtmecheng, @BraceMaker -- keeping the tip way up doesn't seem to be efficient. I do remember seeing a video on youtube of a burly skier that started with the ski almost vertical: the boat seemed to give him a hard pull and he was out of the water in no time. For me, what works with little strain on my back is to touch the back of my ski with my butt and the top of my front boot with the handle. I'd say the ski is 25-30 degrees from parallel to the water. Starts in this way are easy now, but I struggled for a long time when I was learning...
  7. Both feet in. I'm with @Mitzysman, dragging a foot never worked when I was learning deep water starts and I have never tried since.
  8. @JBB we get it, we get it, we get it, we get it...
  9. Ah, great, that thread from a year ago presents the vision JLP has for this app (and for the sport). From the comments in this thread, the A/R version of the app will not happen in the immediate future. The upcoming beta version will require just an iPhone. As a skier, I guess I would miss the immediate feedback of wether I made it around the virtual buoys and I would have to wait for signals from the observer in the boat or for a replay at the end of my pass. I am looking forward to trying out!
  10. @"Keith Menard" there can be other issues in Massachusetts...
  11. Other than the BOA mechanism, I don’t think so. Before you give up on the feather frame BOA HRT, see if you can measure the exact distance of the inserts on your Carbon V and post them here. Someone with that HRT could check if the holes line up. Maybe you could possibly drill an extra hole, if necessary?
  12. Will this app try to detect and track the skier’s ski around the (virtual) buoys using sofisticated computer vision algorithms or will it try to detect and track just the rope angle from the phone’s point of view in the boat?
  13. @swerveit, your best bet probably is to PM @greghayes and see what he says.
  14. Bring it on, @greghayes, I think there are a few techies in this forum that can shake out all the bugs in no time
  15. @klindy, looking forward to trying it out.
  16. A session or two at a ski school may be money better spent to get you to progress through the slalom course.
  17. Oh, I see, it's pylon mounted, at least in the first phase. If I remember correctly, somewhere I read about putting tape markers along the sides of the boat: if the rope reaches the markers, the skier made it around the virtual buoys. So this seems an evolution of that idea where the GPS and gyro sensors of the phone replace the tape markers.
  18. @greghayes, yes, I signed up for their beta program. Here is the original article that I saw. I was wondering if anyone in the know could give a more in depth preview of what to expect. Are you supposed to wear your iPhone while you ski? It seems it might be something more than just sitting in your favorite couch wearing goggles and pretending to be skiing...
  19. I just saw an article on the USA Waterski site for a new app that allows you to slalom virtually. Does anybody have more details?
  20. Thanks, @mmosley899. I'm trying to understand how your system works. If I got it correctly, the heel is attached to the base plate with a "hook" so there is no chance for it to disengage. The only disengagement that can happen is through the spring loaded front hook. I may be thinking about this incorrectly, but in an OTF fall I imagine that most of the torque is in the vertical plane of the ski towards the tip of the ski. The front hook of the MOB system would cause the boot to separate from the ski only if there are other vectors of forces that cause the tip of the boot to move away from its alignment with the front hook. Maybe that's what you mean with skiing forces being more dynamic?
  21. I started to use a Vapor boot with RTP at the end of last year and so far I like it (I had a Vector boot before). I like to read what folks here have to say about the safety of some systems compared to others. The MOB System seems to be the closest to a snow ski binding mechanism. I watched all the videos that Mike has on his website and I am puzzled by the release testing video in which he says "A lot of folks have tried to test this on the dock by stepping in the boot and trying to pressure it forward to release. I've never been able to make that work. Bottom line is if the mechanism releases freely, it's going to work consistently every time." Isn't forward pressure what we would get in an OTF fall? How are we supposed to trust the system is set up properly, with the right tension on the spring? On snow skis and, from watching Horton's test at the beginning of this thread, on the Reflex system there is no problem testing everything before you get into a situation in which you really need to count on the system.
  22. Whatever the cost turns out to be, the laws of supply and demand will work out, as for any other product out there. However, I think the shrinking number of people in this sport is not helped by these price points.
  23. Oh, I see. Thanks, @BraceMaker
