  1. The other thing I noticed is how much air he gets on all of his wake turns. Wonder if he could have been quicker with less air. Makes it easy on the judges I suppose. No video review in those days!

I suppose I should clarify.....I was not at Nationals in '69. I wasn't born until 5 years later. I was looking for cool waterski patches on ebay and found it. Haven't decided what I'm going to put it on yet.

Here is another I found. Sorry I know this is getting off topic.

  2. Vectors will not work well for tricks. Foot can move around too much in those...not tight enough. Wileys are good but a bit heavy. I use wileys on my 2 ski pass and I use a vapor on my 1 ski pass. I am 46 and didn't start tricking until I was almost 40 so I am not doing flips but I do LF on 2 skis......old school! @Horton line trick are still way cool.
  3. You would think after skiing for so long without the pre-gates that it would be easy to judge when to pull out to time a good gate. My current method is to stand in the white wash, look at the boat approaching the gates, and try to judge the right distance for when to go. This has proved that my judgement of the proper distance is sporadic and thus has affected the consistency of my gates: either getting pulled in or dealing with slack right off the bat.

I recall some people using specific visual markers such as when the right gate buoy lines up with blah blah. Can anyone share the visuals that have helped them? Skiing at -22 and -28.

  4. OK class. Nice job on yesterday's assignment- 2 handing 6 ball at 32 off. Your homework for tomorrow is to release the "wrong" hand around 6 ball at 32 off- a la Carl Roberge.

This whole video is worth a watch but skip to 4:30 if in a hurry.

(Full disclosure: No way I could do this. I'm just stoking the fire.)

  5. I put the boat in last weekend. Backed the trailer into the water, hopped up into the bow and started the engine, unwound the trailer winch, and released the strap. As I turned to go back to the helm I noticed the bilge was pumping out water. WTF? My bilge pump never runs. Oh Shit! The drain plug! Reached into the glove box, popped the dog house, and was able to get it in without much problem. Luckily I caught it in time but it sure elevated my heart rate.
  6. Lucky Lowe on teaching how to time up the gates:

"Andy Mapple told me you watch the tow bar go through the gates cuz that's the same on every boat."

A few passes later, Joel is in the water trying to clarify something.

"Yes, but I said ANDY MAPPLE told me this........He could have been lying to me!"
