OscawanaSkier
I've seen a couple older discussions on this, but wanted to see some stats. Please include details (like how ripped up your hands get - or not).
Baller jayski Posted August 1, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 1, 2018 Both palm...one palm one fingers... fingers...Split fingers...miss it all together...name the combination I have done it...
OscawanaSkier
Getting tired of how ripped up my hands get. Got new gloves last weekend and buddy of mine mentioned he’s trying to hold handle with fingers only. The physics make me think there would be less wear and tear with fingers only. Baller skihacker Posted August 1, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 1, 2018 I keep trying to not strangle the handle, then reality arrives, every time.
Supporting Member Than_Bogan Posted August 1, 2018 Supporting Member Share Posted August 1, 2018 I cannot hold to palm. Feel like that must require massive hand muscles. I get plenty of wear everywhere IF I don't use kevlar liners. But if I do I'm generally OK.
Baller skihart Posted August 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 2, 2018 I get out of the water palms one direction then change before going into the course. Usually do two palms down if just doing a long turn or going to drop at the end. I have a couple of pairs of gloves in rotation at all times. If I ski two sets in a morning I always change between brands as the wear spots on my palms differs between the two. Start with the Ryan Dodd gloves first set then tail 41s second set. Baller skihacker Posted August 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 2, 2018 I suppose on further reflection, I start every pass handle in my fingers, cleanish passes stay mostly fingers, scrappy passes go more towards palms/death grip. I used to destroy 2 pairs of gloves every season, I now only destroy the thumb on my left hand, no clue how that goes.
Baller BobF Posted August 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 2, 2018 So a couple of years ago, I stopped getting the giant, peeling callouses in my palms. It just kind of happened. I miss them.
Baller scorban2 Posted August 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 2, 2018 I'd call mine a hybrid grip based on my callouses. They are about 60% on the top of my palm and 40% on the base of my fingers.
Members skigirl00
I tend to hold the rope between my fingers and palms. I have callouses on my palms, but as the season has progressed, my hands hurt less and less. Holding near the bottom of my fingers has allowed me to go longer with less tension in my hands while skiing.
Baller ski6jones Posted August 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 2, 2018 Hold the handle beyond the first knuckle, preferably the second. My hands were a mess when i palmed the handle. Fingers only, and get a big (diameter) handle.
kylegansel
I hold the handle between my fingers and palms. Started using a 1.062 Masterline handle and only HO Tail 41 gloves and the hands have been in much better shape over the past few years.
Baller Chef23 Posted August 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 2, 2018 I hold too much in my palms and it tears up my hands. I went to clincher gloves to protect my hands.
Baller ScottScott Posted August 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 2, 2018 Death grip!!! Someday I'll work on that.....
Baller hemlock Posted August 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 2, 2018 I get up with both palms down and handle in fingers. Then I switch to "goofy" baseball or whatever you call it as I'm left foot forward and left palm up/right palm down. Hold a little less in the fingers (slightly more in palm) when in the course. This has saved my hands from ripping up. Skiing better also helps, taking less hits and throwing the handle if I mess up and have too much slack. Baller S1Pitts Posted August 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 3, 2018 Radar Vice gloves, kinda don't have a choice with them. I pulled out the large dowel and sewed in a piece of smaller round glue gun stick. Moved the handle further down the fingers and feels better than no dowel at all. Also ski both palms down. Baller RazorRoss3 Posted August 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 3, 2018 short of an off balance turn leading to an awkward connection it is always in my fingers, usually in the second digit and my thumb plays zero role in gripping the handle. My fingers never shred. I use a file to keep the callouses down, I also am in the gym all off season so that keep me from ever having baby hands which might help. gt2003
I got a tip a few years back to hold handle at the base of my fingers to prevent the ripping of flesh caused by trying to hold the handle in my palms on the pull up. It's worked well so no plans on changing.
dhofert
I hold mine more towards base of fingers and a bit higher if i think about it.
Baller drewski32 Posted August 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 3, 2018 I hold with my fingers until s*** starts getting hairy, then my palms start to bleed
Baller keithh2oskier Posted August 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 3, 2018 I only hold the handle in the fingers. Never really did it in my palms. I get up with both palms facing down. Adjust the shorts and move my left hand to a palm up (RFF), pull out and ski my pass. When I round 6 I go back to both palms down out the exit gates. Baller sunvalleylaw Posted August 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 3, 2018 From the middle my fingers against my palm. I do get some ripped up callouses on the top pads of my palm where it comes into contact with the bar.
