Baller KRoundy Posted September 19, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 19, 2020 Hi ballers, I have a problem. This week river otters chewed on the hydraulic line for my boat lift and destroyed an expensive piece of hose. I want to protect my new hose and have heard rumors that some have ways of protecting the lines from otters or beavers. Some sort of wire mesh, or PVC pipe or maybe a Kevlar sock? Does anyone here have this problem or have some suggestions how to keep otters from chewing my hydraulic lines?
Baller LeonL Posted September 19, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 19, 2020 I would replace them with stainless steel braided hose, if you can get them.
Baller Wayne Posted September 19, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 19, 2020 Agree on the stainless. You can also buy braided stainless hose sleeve to that can be put over your current hoses.
Baller dvskier Posted September 20, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 20, 2020 We use stainless steel braided hoses in the foothills of SC because the muskrats love to chew on rubber hoses.
Baller KRoundy Posted September 20, 2020 Author Baller Share Posted September 20, 2020 Okay. I have the original set of (ruined) hose still. I’ll go to a local shop and have them make me a braided version or see if they have a sleeve that I could add to my existing hoses. Thanks! Any other ideas or is stainless braid the best? Baller dvskier Posted September 20, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 20, 2020 A trail camera could help identify exactly what times they’re coming around. A .22 rifle would put an end to it.
Baller_ Rednucleus Posted September 20, 2020 Baller_ Share Posted September 20, 2020 River otters are wonderful creatures and an indicator of a healthy ecosystem. Please share your site with them - it is their home after all.
Baller_ RichardDoane Posted September 20, 2020 Baller_ Share Posted September 20, 2020 Go to YouTube and put in, “river otter poop dance”. Those animals have some strange habits.
Baller KRoundy Posted September 20, 2020 Author Baller Share Posted September 20, 2020 @Rednucleus Happy to share, I just don’t want them chewing through my lines.
Baller LeonL Posted September 22, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 22, 2020 Agree with @KRoundy. It may be their home, but the hose ain't theirs to chew!

Baller wilecoyote Posted September 22, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 22, 2020 Not sure what your local laws are, but rifle over water is a no no. Dangerous and irresponsible.
Supporting Member Than_Bogan Posted September 22, 2020 Supporting Member Share Posted September 22, 2020 Not sure how much people are just joking around, but from just a purely practical standpoint the steel mesh solves the problem forever whereas the shooting plan requires constant "maintenance." Baller dvskier Posted September 22, 2020 Baller Share Posted September 22, 2020 The stainless steel mesh works around here until the critters keep chewing at it. Nothing is foolproof. We have a lot of boats on Hydrohoist lifts that muskrats like to chew on. Also I/O boats with their bellows are frequent targets of the muskrats. So far no problems on this lake but when I was on Lake Lanier in GA the muskrats were a constant issue. The stainless steel braid cable covers are pricy.
