  1. @jgills88 Team competition begins tomorrow. Today was individual swivel and adagio. @Cooper_Trelawney The Winter Haven area used to be a training ground for three event skiers. Not any more. However the Cypress Gardens Ski Team has morphed into a wonderful local ski club with an emphasis on youth. A bunch of the old CG skiers are still actively involved. That’s one reason the World tournament landed in Winter Haven.
  2. Back in the day, Tom Hardman’s son was developing a center drive outboard that never went into production. We featured a prototype in an article. Jim McCormick drove it and liked it. Center position raises challenges for trick pinning.
  3. How many times have you ever seen a two-ski W5B? The next year Ricky and Alan added Reverse toe back, toe front to their runs. The beginning of the reverse toe era. No releases. Of course, Bruce Cockburn had been doing reverse toes for a long time before the Americans caught up. I tried to mimic everything Ricky did. Two years later I started my run with the a two ski W5B in at least one tournament.
  4. The skier at the 28 mark skiing behind the twin Johnson Cobia is Ricky McCormick. @MarkTimm had it right. I've got film of Ricky when I skied against him in the All American the following year. Nearly the identical run.
  5. Men tricks include Ricky McCormick, Alan Kempton and I think Mike Suyderhoud. (Not in that order.) The first skier doing ramp tricks I think is Lee Lyman.
  6. Great clip of Stiffler. What an animal. He did not use a rear binder, just put his free foot on the back of the ski.
  7. @Horton I’m more interested in your specs. Prescription? Brand? I’ve skied with prescription RecSpecs for years. I use a homemade strap made from a foam eyeglass retainer.
  8. If my memory serves me, that house was owned by Malcolm Pope, brother of Cypress Gardens founder Dick Pope. Sr. Dick lived on the other side of the canal.
  9. Lake Howard? On the canal? I have the same reaction as @thager: You have a basement? I’m on the east side of Winter Haven.
  10. @OldboyII Although I’m a great believer in the wisdom of nature and agree with you to a degree, the human body did not evolve to handle crashes at speed.
  11. You’re probably right. Sigh. When I was Executive Director, I argued that we needed a National Water Ski Center, place where the Nationals would be held every year. When USA Water Ski launched this project, I thought they’re finally implementing my concept. Now we’ll have another Lake Grew.
  12. The park road now extends from the soccer complex around the east side of the new lake to Denton Road. Nice site. Polk County’s answer to Okeeheelee. I keep talking about a trick lake because with that this could be a Nationals site.
  13. That lake is the original excavation that was suspended for a long time. The lake now continues past the dog park all the way to the soccer fields. I don’t think it was a matter of connecting to that small pond. The new lake obliterated the pond.
  14. Most likely no public access. Whether or not the operator will offer memberships of some kind remains to be seen.
  15. Talked to Mark Jackson, head of Polk Sports Marketing (and former Cypress Gardens skier). They are currently working on a plan to operate the ski lake. I’m not at liberty to say who it is but the group involves a company well known to BOS. I quizzed him about the trick lake. Options are to use a natural lake on the other side of the parkway or use the adjacent Lake Myrtle.
  16. It’s immediately adjacent to Elite Cable Park. Who will run it is a big question. It will take knowledgeable volunteers. The Winter Haven crowd are show skiers and have a home on Lake Silver. (Kudos to the City of Winter Haven for that.) Perhaps the Lakeland Water Ski Club? Some new group?
  17. It’s a good question that you pose. I’ve had the stuffing knocked out of me more than once jumping back in the day, although I was among the first to wear a helmet. I’m not a flipper and haven’t experienced any serious head bangs while tricking. For me the bad trick falls are the backward neck snappers. I want to point out that one of the most dangerous of boat-towed sports, in my opinion, is tubing. The potential for head and neck trauma is very real, especially since many people ride prone and the head and neck are not supported by an erect spine.
  18. It’s fantastic and will greatly improve the appeal of the trick event.
  19. Wow, Joel almost 12k both rounds. Jake right on his heels. Great tricking.
  20. @skierjp Just drove past Spirit Lake 20 minutes ago. Funny how some traffic lights are not operating and others are. I’m seeing spotty light damage. No major flooding. Things would have been different if we got the 16-20 inches of rain predicted. I guess we got something like 11”.
