  1. Tied my M8 National Record yesterday and upped it another 70 points today. (“Pending”) Life is good when other people think they’re too old. Will celebrate with Jack Daniels tonight.
  2. Forgot to mention Broadside Harbor in Caldwell, ID near Boise. Site of 2016 Nationals.
  3. I once ate lunch with a group of skiers and family members that included Cornelia Wallace, former wife of notorious Alabama governor George Wallace. She had Winter Haven family connections and her son got into tournament skiing. Of course Callaway Gardens owner Bo Callaway was Secretary of the Army, a Congressman and nearly became governor of Georgia. Bill Clifford was a buddy of his.
  4. It was probably 1966. I looked at your video again. That’s not the same boat. No stripes on the cowl and those are not twin 65s.
  5. I skied against Bruce (aka Caitlyn) Jenner in the late ‘60s early ‘70s. He was a nice kid. Years later he graciously wrote the forward to my book Hit It! I’ve met other Olympians including Winter Haven home boy Rowdy Gaines.
  6. 62 years and counting. Body still works but it hurts.
  7. If you can, post video of your efforts so that we can see what’s happening.
  8. I can’t comment on motor setup but to respond to some of your other questions, in my opinion rope type or length makes no difference; helm location probably makes no difference as long as the weight in the boat is trimmed; hydrofoils probably no help.
  9. With marginal horsepower, be sure not to stand up too soon. Stay low on your haunches. Let the boat gain some momentum before standing. Keep the handle low and your arms flexed. You are not too old.
  10. Thanks for the response @dchristman. No, I did not ski another tournament until ‘66. Fun to hear about your time with Jimmy.
  11. Almost but not quite as good as the Holy Cow Cup.
  12. @Cnewbert Sopris is one pretty mountain.
  13. So now you can get a slalom set in the morning, bash bumps after lunch and try your luck at fly fishing on the Frying Pan before sundown.
  14. I have never been able to hold a reverse back wrap. However, I do a WBB to a momentary reverse wrap with the handle straight out to the side. I hold it just long enough to get an edge for the RWBB. Dynamic.
  15. ?? What the heck does this guy do with his left hand when he turns to the front?
  16. Burnett is also, as far as I know, the first to shape the running surface of slalom skis with a rasp or file. I remember him at one National tournament asking skiers what performance issues they were having with their ski and then he’d go to town on it with a rasp. I thought this guy has a lot of confidence to take a customer’s high-end ski and alter it permanently on the spot.
  17. O’Brien’s first ad for its revolutionary tunnel concave featured Leroy Burnett, a skier no one outside of the Western Region had ever heard of.
  18. Hilarious. I want to see a similar ad for boats.
  19. I hate the constant shift in camera angle during a trick run. You get this beautiful view from the boat and you are watching each trick, holding your breath… then it cuts away at the most dramatic moment and it takes a second for your brain to adjust to what just happened. Pick an angle and stay with it for God’s sake. It’s only twenty seconds.
  20. Joel’s tumble turn steals the day.
