  1. Oh, so this is a terrible announcement because what CC should have done is invent cold fusion and biodegradable plastic instead of just an electric boat. I get it. Is it summer time yet??? I wanna go ski. Shelby and OB, I'll be at Okee Feb 10-13 if ya'll want to come. P.S. Thank you Brent. Not only that, it's just friggin cool!
  2. I highly doubt a few electric ski boats will even make a dent in the overall grid system. What about nuclear power? Much cleaner and side benefit of skiing in warm water in the winter! ;-) I was kidding about the overhead trolley system..... I bet a high torque boat would feel great to slalom skiers. You would reduce the boat RPMs going up and down.
  3. How about a trolley system? ;-) Controls power and steering!
  4. Yes, but I believe it will go away after X number of restarts. Jody can confirm. There is no ODBii connection. edit: just pulled this from the manual Canceling System Alarms To manually cancel system warning messages, simultaneously pressboth up and down on the tachometer. This will disable the warningmessage temporarily. If the problem is not corrected in one minute, the warning will be displayed again. The operator can cancel asoften as needed.
  5. Let me share why I am so excited about this. We don't even have electricity at our private lake, but that does not matter. This is an engineering/technical exercise! Try not to get caught up in the little details. Look a the big picture! I am FAR from the greenest person out there. I would never own an electric car at this point. However, look how far battery/motor technology has come in the past 10 years. Where do you think it will be in the next 10 years? What if they could make an electric boat last for a dozen sets? What if it was quick to recharge? What if the batteries were very lightweight? I believe that is where the public demand is and thus that is where technology will push towards. Last year's prototype could pull about 6 passes. This one can do about 6 times that many. What's next? I also would not go assuming Nautique spent all their R&D dollars into this. I honestly have no clue, but if PCM develops a new motor, I doubt Nautique flips the bill. There is another company that developed the motors, trans, etc. for this project. I am just SUPER proud that CC stood up and wanted to be a big part in the process. Will an electric boat be for everyone? Nope. But if it does all the things I mentioned above, I sure would consider it.
  6. Think of it like a concept car; or like a technology exercise. This one is too expensive for release, but the fact that Bill, Nautique and this other company are committed to heading in this direction is big news! If you could see how far they have come in the past year, you would be astounded! I saw the prototype last year. It was an old Mastercraft with car batteries. It worked, but was heavy and would only last about 6-8 passes. Fast forward one year and look at this beauty!!! Not only is it well engineered, the batteries (Lithium Ion now) last MUCH longer. Still a ways from being ready for the public, but a HUGE step. I'll be skiing behind it in a few weeks and will give a full report back. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/clemsondave/Electric%20boat/CopyofCIMG0903small.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/clemsondave/Electric%20boat/Emotorshot2copy-1.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/clemsondave/Electric%20boat/CIMG0880-1.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/clemsondave/Electric%20boat/Emotorcopy-1.jpg
  7. MS, I had the faux teak last year (and this year). While I still love the look of real teak, I am completely sold on this stuff. Mine never peeled, scratched or anything else. It also kept skis from sliding around on the platform and banging into the transom. I used to make a piece of teak to block the skis from hitting, but this stuff is really nice.
  8. I'm dying to try it. Right now, I'm back on my '06 X5 and its bringing back some good memories.
  9. Question: Is a safety coordinator required for every practice? Or, just when guest is there? Answer: A Safety [coordinator] is only required when Guest members are participating.
  10. More from Brandon: Question: On this online sanction, do we need to state who will be practicing? Or, can we just put all of our club members (whether they actually show up or not)? Answer: The online sanction application will not ask for participant names. However, it is a good idea for the club to keep their roster current with USA-WS. Question: Do we need to report back if a guest comes to ski? Answer: Yes, if a Guest member skis in a sanctioned event you should send USA-WS their membership application and Guest membership fee. I have asked about the safety coordinator.
  11. The only G10 plates Ive seen break have been Goode's. They use square corners on the holes. That creates a weak point. I've seen two break, both at the corners of the holes. I make my own plates and use round or oval holes, but IF I had a Goode plate, I'd take a file and round out those corners. If you want to add stiffness, get a thicker G10 plate. It comes in several thicknesses.
  12. that's what I was told. We have two state safety level safety people, but that's still not enough. We are considering getting every to go through the safety coordinator clinic. It's not that difficult.
  13. Here you go, my email to Traci and Brandon. His responses in red: Thanks for answering my questions. There are several questions popping up about this on the forums. Before I answer them, can I get clarification so that we do it right? - I can do a sanction in advance for 7 days a week, 7am - 8pm, say April - October. As in one sanction for all those dates.correct - Practice logs will not need to be kept of who skiedcorrect - Guests will be required to fill out a guest membership form and a waivercorrect - Safety coordinator (or higher) will need to be on-site at all timescorrect Other questions: - Does every boat driver need to be at least a trained driver? You are not required to have a certified driver for sanctioned practices. - Do you need to have full safety equipment on-site at all times, just like a tournament? ie backboard There are no formal requirements for safety equipment at practices, but you are always encouraged to have the appropriate equipment on hand. Your Safety Coordinator will be trained in this area, and is ultimately responsible for determining what safety equipment is appropriate. - Does the boat need to be an approved (or previously) approved boat? No. - Any increase in insurance requirements for promo boats this year? No (http://www.usawaterski.org/graphics/downloads/InsuranceResources/SanctionedEvents/TowboatInsuranceRequirements.PDF) - Anything else I'm missing that might be important? Please see the practice/exhibition sanction info at: http://www.usawaterski.org/pages/TournKit/Practice/Practice%20Applications/ClubPracticeExhibitionApplication.pdf Thanks! dave
  14. I spoke with USAWS and am following up with an email to make sure I have it right. I'll post as soon as they respond.
  15. Just because an engine has a ton of power, doesn't mean it is going to use more fuel in all situations. I have a car that I modified to have almost twice the stock HP/TQ. It gets the same gas mileage in town and on the highway. Apx 740hp and it gets 26-27mpg on the highway. Another example. Not sure if anyone here is a fan of Top Gear on the BBC. They did a test of a Prius vs a BMW M3. They ran both around their test track. Not only did the M3 smoke the Prius (obviously), but the M3 got better gas mileage during that test. If a boat has more power, I'd bet that it would use less fuel to pull a skier; assuming both boats weighed the same and had the same drag. Now, if the OP could make a lighter weight boat with less drag with the same hp that is in current boats, he'd have something impressive!
  16. An electric ski boat does exist. In fact, they have recently built one with a pretty impressive hull. Can't give any details until they allow it, but they are throwing some pretty big dollars at it. Pretty far off topic here due to the price of the motors. We're a LONG way from it being cost effective.
  17. Does anyone have insurance NOT through USAWS? Comments on price/coverage? Just want to weigh all options. Going online to fill out a 7 page form just to go ski a quick set doesn't sound practical.
  18. If you need parts, I have a couple sets of the releases and a medium plate. Add your own boots and you're set!
  19. Guess ya'll are not too concerned about this? This is new, they are requiring us to go online and sanction every practice. This is not as simple as keeping a log.
  20. I've known about keeping practice logs. Unless I am reading this wrong, this is different. It is requiring us to go on USAWS's website and SANCTION every practice.
  21. Does anyone have further information on this new USAWS policy? It appears that they are now going to require us to log/sanction every practice set. Here is a clip from the .pdf. "An important benefit USA Water Ski provides to its member organizations/clubs is the ability to host and sanctionevents. As part of sanctioning, USA Water Ski provides General Liability and Participant Accident coverage. Beginning in2011, affiliated clubs will be required to formally sanction ALL club practices and exhibitions through USA Water Skiand adhere to the requirements outlined below. Detailed information on the coverage is available under the“Sanctioned Events Program†section of the Insurance Resources link at www.usawaterski.org. SANCTIONING: Club practice/exhibition sanctioning is available online through the Club’s “Membersâ€Only†section ofour Web site at no charge by going to https://www.usawaterski.org/members/login/index.asp or clicking on the“Member Login†icon in the upper rightâ€hand corner of USA Water Ski’s home page, directly underneath the searchfunction, and entering the club’s membership number and password. Your club will be able to sanction clubpractices/exhibitions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as well as view previous sanctions. Or, if you prefer, your club cansanction their practices and exhibitions by completing the following application(s) and submitting it to USA Water Ski’sCompetition Department along with a signed Event Sanction Agreement. SANCTION APPROVAL: Once the sanction application has been approved and a sanction number issued, the clubcontact will be eâ€mailed an approval. The necessary Practice/Exhibition event forms are available online athttp://www.usawaterski.org/pages/TournKit/OnlineTournamentKits.htm."
  22. Inversion table every night before you go to bed. Just about eliminated all my back issues.
  23. Skied for the first time in 3 months. Power plant lake in Va. 61 water, 55 air. Not too bad!
