Passions in addition to skiing

Standup jetski's are my other big passion. This was last winters project for me. All custom and handmade carbon fiber hull. Fully designed, built, assembled, and painted by me. Due to the size and cure times, I paid some friends with beer and snacks to help me lay it up though.

Jody has a Ric Shaw I believe.

I guess I had a lot of passions, fast cars, fast boats, motorcycles, dirt bikes, guns, etc., maybe I am getting old, for some reason, I have let them slide, including my skiing.

Looking at Jody's boat got me thinking I need to rekindle my go fast boat interests!

This is the time of year when I start to get the itch to go to the sand dunes, usually fall and spring when the weather is cooler. I have an old '85 Honda 350x that is a wheelie machine. Being in Utah I'm pretty sure winters would be unbearable without snow skiing and snowboarding. Used to do a lot more mtn biking, tennis, and golf, but being that they are all warmer weather sports they have been overtaken by skiing.

Telemark racing and free skiing. I'm 20 minutes from Bridger Ski Bowl and 40 minutes from the ski pond. Bozeman would be ideal if it was just 2000' lower - ever since I started skiing the course, our winters have been too long!

I used to race bikes, but there just isn't enough time these days. A fella only gets so many hall passes.

@jfw432 Does anyone even make standup jetskis any more? Are you rebuilding and customizing old ones? While I never really got into them, those things are sort of interesting and require (gasp!) actual skill.

Carbon hull seems like a good idea for sure.

@GregDavis, Braaaaapppppppp!!!!!! Love taking my YZ into the woods, though I think next year a few track days are in order.

@Thager, what kind of sledding do you do? Winter time finds me on a sled. I love riding out west, but money, time, work and kids keeps me from going out each year. I tide over by playing on the lakes, swamps and rivers on north central MN.

Love duck hunting, especially divers, but I let that slide when I started hanging out with my wife and the number of idiots grew greater then the ducks. Hoping to get back into it.

Otherwise anything outside and with the kids.

And for some reason (I blame my dad) I like cutting and splitting firewood....I shouldn't cause it is hard, nasty work and I should know better but I love the feeling after a day of it.

@Than_Bogan It's a very small community even by slalom ski standards. Yamaha and Kawasaki still make a standup model but most dealers only get one, if that. The stock models are pretty heavy and under powered so most people who ride learn to customize. There are maybe 10 or so companies who sell custom hulls and most of those are run out of garages, hand built to order, and extremely expensive. Aftermarket engines cost more than boat and car engines too because they're all hand built as well.

It's a neat sport but definitely a money pit. I built my own because I couldn't afford to buy someone else's $10k carbon hull with nothing in it. I enjoy slalom skiing a whole lot more. The sad part is I have enough money in that 6ft long jetski to buy a decent early 2000's ski boat....kind of tempting now that I think about it.

stand up jet ski, vintage snowmobile racing, hockey, snow skiing, motocross

kawasaki quit building standups in 2011, yamaha still makes a stand up super jet, but it is sold for "competition use only" the stand up skis are all two stroke engins and jan. 1 2012 our government put restrictions on the use of two stroke engins.

Yeah people are pushing 2 strokes out even though it's been proven that many 2 stroke engines are cleaner than 4 strokes. 4 strokes are just too heavy for standup jetskis so it's unfortunate.

@skijay I bought an aftermarket hull a few years ago that was loosely based off the Yamaha superjet but made 18 inches shorter and 6 inches wider. I then heavily modified that hull design even further smoothing transitions and adding rocker where I wanted it, made a mold off of that, and redesigned a few more things before finally finishing the mold. I learned a lot for sure.

@Texas6 I'm pretty much retired now, but I've been racing for 35 years, professionally for about half of that. I won 12 championships along the way and that still gets me hired for the occassional endurance race, but it's not covering the bills anymore ... now that the bills include a rabid water skiing Jones!

Hey @AB Jack Nichlaus used to swear by water skiing as a second sport. Claimed the added leg strength gave him his power for long drives. I think he just loved water skiing and was trying to justify it....

I like to snow ski, golf, barefoot and windsurf. Sure wish I did nearly as much of any of those as I used to. We also have two Kawasaki stand up Jet Skis, 650SX. They are a blast!
