Baller_ Wish Posted May 31, 2013 Baller_ Share Posted May 31, 2013 MAY IS SKIN CANCER AWARNESS MONTH – So thought I’d better get this out before the last day. Anyway, the title is what it is to get folks to click on it. What does Andy have to do with this. Well, we all know we want to ski like Andy. But being like him is pretty darn good as well. Not only is he a top athlete but also a nice guy. That nice part can’t be emphasized enough. He is also very sun conscientious these days and takes every precaution. I skied with him a month ago and noticed 3 things right away. He wears a long sleeve SPF hoodie. He put the bimini on the boat while we were there (he had the hoodie on before that), and he wears a hat. So I complemented him on his sun protection prowess. I asked if he sees a dermatologist. His single word answer, “regularly”. But what struck me the most was his admitting he wished he knew more/done more about sun protection in his earlier years. A sentiment I share having gone though surgeries and chemo for malignant melanoma (9 yrs cancer free). So, the point of this thread is simple. Awareness. And the free flow of ideas, techniques and products you may have used to better protect yourself, family and friends from over exposure to the sun. Hopefully we get more ideas and products posted along with any good web deals like we see with general ski equipment. I’ve compiled some info/links and categorized product links (some I use). http://www.skincancer.org/news/announcements/skin-cancer-awareness-month-2012 SUNSCREEN LOTIONS http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/sunscreens/buying-guide.htm Three sunscreens were given the Consumer Reports "Best Buy" rating: • Up & Up Sport SPF 30 • No-Ad with Aloe and Vitamin E SPF 45 • Equate Baby SPF 50 (Wal-Mart brand) Six others were recommended: • Banana Boat Sport Performance SPF 30 • Coppertone Sport Ultra Sweatproof SPF 30 • CVS Fast Cover Sport SPF 30 • Walgreens Sport SPF 50 • Ocean Potion Kids Instant Dry Mist SPF 50 • Banana Boat Sport Performance SPF 100 SPF CLOTHING SPF clothing…( http://www.sunprotection.net/sunprotectionclothing.html ) shirts hats pants swimwear http://www.tactics.com/oneill/24-7-tech-zip-hoodie-rash-guard-closeout/smoke-white-graphite http://www.isnorkel.com/product/3037/O-Neill-men-s-24-7-long-sleeve-hoody?CAWELAID=1896322171&cagpspn=pla&gclid=CIbnr9Dzr7YCFQmFnQodA3gA7g http://www.reefgear.com/oneill-24-7-hoodie-rashguard?___store=default&gclid=CM_U17b0r7YCFQ8GnQod1xIAqw http://www.coolibar.com/home.jsp?s_kwcid=adwordskt&gclid=CObVh7nC87UCFQSnnQodOC8AkA http://www.sunprecautions.com/shop/unisex_mens/shirts http://www.solartex.com/servlet/-strse-Adults--dsh--Sun-Protection/Categories http://www.columbia.com/Omni-Shade/Technology_Omni-Shade,default,pg.html http://www.sungrubbies.com/product_index_html/Sun-protective-clothing-Men1.htm Great prices at below site. http://www.spfstore.com/Men-s-SPF-Clothing-Hats-and-Swimwear-s/34.htm SPF UMBRELLAS https://www.google.com/search?q=SPF+sun+umbrellas&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#q=SPF+sun+umbrellas&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=hrY&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbs=vw:l&tbm=shop&ei=KTw9UeiQPI-y9gTZ0YGABw&start=10&sa=N&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.43287494,d.eWU&fp=f25c092a40fc52de&biw=1347&bih=684 SPF SHADE CLOTH, colors, concepts in design http://www.gemplers.com/shade-cloth http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/category/shade-cloth designs http://www.creativeshadesolutions.com/diysails.htm http://www.houzz.com/retractable-shade-cloth http://www.sunrazeshade.com.au/ShadeSail.aspx BIMINI TOPS http://www.discountbiminitops.com/?gclid=CNjYpunR87UCFQbqnAodokUAlA http://search.overtons.com/?Ns=p_image_sort|1||p_purchased|1&cname=Bimini-Tops-T-Tops-Shades&Ne=1000&N=2069 https://www.google.com/search?q=boat+bimini&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=z4t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ZEQ9UbaNC5TG9gS_lYDIDQ&ved=0CHwQsAQ&biw=1347&bih=684#imgrc=_ SHADE CHAIRS https://www.google.com/search?q=shade+chair&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#q=shade+chair&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=yKu&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=Q0g9UczZGYrW8gT8lYGAAQ&ved=0CFUQsxg&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.43287494,d.eWU&fp=f25c092a40fc52de&biw=1347&bih=684 WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR IDEAS, PRODUCTS???? footnote: he did give me permission to use his name and story. Baller_ Wish Posted May 31, 2013 Author Baller_ Share Posted May 31, 2013 @OB Mine ignores things that I think should be removed with a hunting knife and then turns around and takes something the size of a pin head. Baller Skoot1123 Posted May 31, 2013 Baller Share Posted May 31, 2013 As my dad told me (a doc) just keep a watchful eye on any questionable moles/spots etc and monitor them for any changes. Here's to a happy and healthy ski season!

Baller gregy Posted May 31, 2013 Baller Share Posted May 31, 2013 I'm a big fan of Eagle Sports. I have one of their hoodies that I like. http://www.eaglesports.com/eaglecoolplushoodie.aspx
Baller lakeaustinskier Posted May 31, 2013 Baller Share Posted May 31, 2013 Living in Texas I own the O'Neill 24/7 hoodie and love it. I also own the Eagle hoodie and although great - not as cool as the O'Neill. The hoodies are great since compared to those old tight fitting sun shirts they feel much cooler. I also like putting the hood up and protecting the back of my neck and ears.

Baller_ Wish Posted August 7, 2013 Author Baller_ Share Posted August 7, 2013 Should look at my own thread cause I may have said this but the FDA has stepped in on a few things as well. New labeling and testing requirements are effective for all sunscreen products. Many common phrases used on sunscreen products, such as "sunblock," "waterproof," "prevents skin cancer," etc. are no longer permitted by U.S. FDA. In addition, specific testing must be completed for each sunscreen product before other claims about the product's UVA and UVB protection can be made. I am a huge proponent of limited sun. Not 0 sun. With the FDA jumping in I believe there is marrit to what @scottchipman is saying. Limit your time in the sun, shade is your friend and SPF clothing/hats IS a sure thing. Porkfight
@Wish, thank you for posting this! My occupation puts me outdoors quite a bit so staying out of the path of UV rays on my days off is a priority.

Porkfight
@MS, it was from an old rathergood.com skit. I thought it was random and funny at the time and have been using it for various things throughout the years.

skibumm
I will comment on this if it has not yet hit close to home. I have a 22 year old daughter that was diagnosed with malignant melanoma a year ago. She has not had that much sun exposure either and it is a starteling reality when it hits a loved one. She is cancer free now but we are all much more conscious of exposure. She uses an umbrella a lot and sunscreen everyday as do we all. I invested in a comercial spray tan system for her and my other 3 daughters that still want to look tan in the summer so they could fit in. Funny thing is now all her friends are very sun consciouls and the spray tan system gets a regular work out.
skibumm
Scott not sure if you know or not but this is Greg Anderson. Bri had it on her shin of all places. She had been having some moles taken off and this on bugged her when she shaved her legs and the Dr. though nothing of it because it was really small. Thurns out it was really deep. They sent it out to Huntsman and they sent it to New York because they had never seen anything like it. The Path in New York is world renowned for melanoma. They operated and took a big chunk out of her leg and 5 lymph nodes. All the nodes came back negative which meant no chemo. She goes in every two months for 5 years to have a complete body scan and they have documentend every little part on her body for future reference. Baller_ Wish Posted August 8, 2013 Author Baller_ Share Posted August 8, 2013 @skibumm good that she is on the path to recovery. I highly recommend having any teenager or young adult watch "Dear 16 Year Old Me" off of youtube. Because even though the above suggestion of products are helpful, they only go as far as the person willing to use them. Education plays a huge role. I will never forget the day I showed this to my now teenage daughter. She was 5 when I went through my Chemo. We've managed to protect her until this now "independent" stage. We both cried watching it. A lot. She has an understanding she did not have before. It still amazes me though that I hear her friends talk about how they need to get tan. Education can be some of the strongest medicine. I guess I'll post the link.
crashman
Great topic- I really like the sun protective hoodie. I'm thinking of an official Baller Nation version with proceeds going to cancer research. Last year I had a 14 year old patient come to see me who had a peeling sunburn on his back from mowing the lawn without a shirt on- I made him and his mom watch the 16 year old me video while sitting in my office.
