  1. my 2 cents. Just an observation. I started looking for a late model 196 w ZO back in 2015. Ended up w a beauty in 2018. 500 hrs & showroom condition. in 2015 there was an 08 196 for about 28K w about 500 hrs. To this day it is still on SIA for the same price w about 1000 hrs. Seemed high in 2015 but reasonable now for a ZO boat. But there are very few late model 196s w ZO on the market.
  2. Only my opinion but I started skiing 55 yrs ago behind an old 35hp OB and only skied behind OBs for the next 20 yrs or so. Finally got a ski boat for regular use in my late 20s. skiing behind OBs for all those years without a course to ski led to many bad habits that I could get away with behind the boat. Skiing behind a ski boat was a wake up call. Had to basically re-learn how to ski properly. Then throw in course skiing, big time humbling. I haven't made it through a 38, yet but I still hope to. So I think starting to ski at an early age isn't necessarily an indicator of short line success, I think it depends more on the availability of and Inboard ski boat, a course and coaching and some inborn natural talent.
  3. @motoskier I had the same exact thing happen last year, lff, rounding 4 ball at 32 , just got the ski under me, rope came tight and pow, left hip felt like someone hit me with hammer. Had to let go, immediate pain in the fleshy area between hip joint and pelvis(as @Horton) said. Swelled and turned all sorts of puple ish colors. Just rested, stopped skiing for a week, did some stretches and was able to ski. But I could feel a bit of pain there for the next couple months but was pain free about 3 months out. No pain all winter. But the weird thing was that I felt the same pain when I started skiing again this spring but it disappeared after a week or so. Pain free since then.
  4. @skibrain Yeah that is a perfect example of lean lock. I have only experienced it a handful of times over the years. The problem for me is that when it happens I think for a split second that if I can hold this that I will be super early for the next buoy. Then in the next split second I find I am either letting go or if not then skipping like a stone and crashing hard. For anyone who hasn't experienced it yet, you will know it when it happens.
  5. After all that you think he would have tried to hold on and get through the gates. Amazing pass.
  6. Dangers of Slalom. A big one is Addiction.
  7. Or you could ski at Squaw Valley Nov-June every year they have enough snow and the waterski conditions aren't favorable. Only a 2.5 hr drive on good roads.
  8. Great Gloves, thin, good grip, seem to hold up well. I personally find they run a little small, I usually find medium fits me but I need a large in the Miami Nautiques.
  9. @bananaron I think I could give you a run for the money on the Pristine condition. bought my 09 196 from @PatM last year. It was showroom condition. It is still pretty close. src="https://us.v-cdn.net/5017617/uploads/editor/zj/fyi2238tzxow.jpg" alt="" />
  10. One of my favorites, used to be nice and black but after 24 yrs of use it is a little faded. @lpskier and @Cruznski may remember this one.
  11. Ditto watch the temp gauge. Had one crack on my 05 196. 5 miles away from my dock I am idling along and look at the temp showing 200, brought it up to about 2mph and the temp dropped right back to 160. Enough suction when powered up to mostly seal up leak. Got home grabbed the strainer and it broke off in my hand. For the short term I would go with bypassing it rather than trying epoxy and/or duct tape.
  12. I haven't tried it in few years but I used to run the course on my Wakeboard at 15 off at 22mph. I could get all 6 but only if I skipped the gates and just hung outside the wakes to get to 1 ball. Just couldn't seem to get enough angle with a toe edge through the gates, but lots of fun.
  13. @Dockoelboto FWIW I sold a nice 05 196 last year, 540 hrs, PP, heater, bimini in very nice shape for $21K. LE edition, keyless start etc. For free skiing PP seemed to work fine. Only reason I sold was that I found an 09 196 with ZO and I ski tournaments so I upgraded.
  14. Raquette River Brewery In Tupper Lake NY is thinking about calling one, IP Spray.
  15. Still ice on my lake but starting to break up, should be clear in a few more days, better than last year when it took until 5/2 to clear.
  16. No new snow but ice still holding firm, guy out on the lake on his ATV 2 days ago, went cross country skiing last evening after dinner. Liking DST but looking forward to ice out, hopefully in a couple weeks.
  17. Go with Ski Safe. They specialize in Boat Insurance and for todays inboard ski boats with ZO etc and all the computerized engine management systems they have all the coverages you need. Your basic State Farm, Allstate companies may offer the coverage but may not come through in the event of a loss. I have my boat with them and I am in the insurance business. Not trying to sell them but they are the best choice.
  18. @ Pat M & @ Bruce_Butterfield +3 for Dave Spencer. only coaching at a ski school I ever got, Dave was and excellent coach and a great 3 event skier. He held the records for M1 Slalom, Trick and Jump for NY state for many years. For reasons unknown by me, Dave pretty much gave up tournament skiing in his late 20s but ran the ski school for many years afterwards.
  19. Golf and mostly other sports that have to do with H2O in a different form. Downhill skiing, Cross country skiing, occasional snowboarding, Back Country skiing on tele gear or AT set up and snow shoeing once in a while. Our winter sports season is usually longer here in the Adirondacks especially this year.
  20. Haven't checked actual water temp since 11/15 when the surface froze over. Friday morning the combined air/water temp was +18f. Water 32, air -14f.
  21. Lake temp this am is a solid and I do mean SOLID 32, but it is glass calm and hard as glass.
  22. Looks like an Air Chair with a slalom binding on it. I have ski foiled but on a 2 ski setup many yrs ago. One of the only water sports(or any sport) where you don't really bend you knees to achieve balance. Once up you kept your legs straight and just used your ankles to navigate. It is a pretty weird sensation but once you get the hang of it, it is a lot of fun and challenging.
  23. @cruznski Does ski great, other than an occasional visit from uninvited uniformed officers in a boat! last 2 mornings has lots of ice in the shallows along the causeway.
  24. @lpskier You got me by a few. I got in 27 practice sets and got to 6 tournaments which is the most I've made in a number of yrs. (Thanks to Matts' Digger Dogs nearby) I did also get 51 ski rides down the lake and back just free skiing.
  25. on my 09 Nautique I found that channel locks were not usable, to tight to get in to take the sensor off. Found that a 22mm wrench worked perfectly.
