  1. I went from well-loved and worn Strava boots to Carbitex Vapor boots last season. After a few sets they broke in and skied great. Not as stiff and snug as my old Fogman’s but the best setup for me at the moment.
  2. Calipers aren’t a requirement; eye balling center is fine.

  4. The center screw into the boot should keep it centered. For rotation, I miss the indicators the prior aluminum plate had. I used calipers and measured the slots until I felt like it was centered for the front boot.
  5. Thank you @DavidN. @Markt I am interested in buying your clamp I will send you an email. I need to keep my clamp for MC/Malibu’s, my friends borrow the boom.
  6. To many unknowns to be able to estimate value. Did the motor freeze, was the boat swamped, condition of the interior? If it’s a mechanical issue with the engine that’s probably easier to estimate from a distance than an electrical issue. I probably would be interested in the challenge if it was closer and I hadn’t bought a 196 this spring. I agree clean 07-09 196s with ZO are selling for $25-27k with less than a thousand hours. When I was looking for a boat and considering repowers or ZO conversions spending $20k(total) on a boat like that didn’t make sense to me when compared with buying a clean/straight used ZO boat for $5k more.
  7. I am looking for assistance identifying the manufacture of this barefoot boom clamp. I got it with a used boom 20+ years ago. This clamp fits MasterCraft and Malibu pylons, but not the larger pylon of my CC 196. Barefoot International was the only source of clamps I could find online and it’s a different style.
  8. I would recommend you travel to check the boat out in person or have somebody else inspect the boat for you. I drove 12 hours one way to buy a 2009 boat this winter that was misrepresented (soft/cracked floor, vinyl tears, scraped hull, 1,400 hours instead of 1,000…). This boat was at a small dealer of a competing brand. I am grateful I went and checked the boat out in person rather than buying and having it shipped sight unseen. Fortunately, I had a loaner pickup truck at the time so the miles were on a dealers truck and a few months later I found my mint 08 CC 196 for a fair price three hours away.

  10. When I was boat shopping I had concerns about long term parts availability for the older multi-port injection motors PCM GT40, Indmar LT1 and LTR. Not sure how valid that was. I did think it would be easier to switch a throttle body injected boat to a carburetor if needed, than a multi-port one. EFI is nice and was one of my criteria for a boat. There had been an issue with replacement ECUs for the GT40 no longer being available but this thread Planet Nautique GT40 ECU discusses a work around for that. I have heard mixed things about parts availability for other marine items. It seems the GT40 is a solid power plant but the GT40 engines were marinized and put into new boats by CC into 2001, past when Ford has stopped making new blocks. MasterCraft/Ilmor is doing something similar now putting new 5.7L GM motors into Prostar after GM stopped making the blocks.

  12. Having recently acquired a 08 CC 196 I would encourage you to look for a CC TSC hulled boat with a GM 350 5.7L motor(02+), aka the PCM Excalibur. The Ford GT40 is a great motor but hasn’t been made for over two decades and some parts are getting hard to source, fortunately, an option for replacement ECU’s have been found. The original TSC’s(97-01) is a great skiing and driving hull, however the dash of the 97-99 is just to dated looking for me. Other MasterCraft options would be 95-97 Prostar(98+SportStar/Skier) or 01+ Prostar 190/197. My last boat was a 99 MC SportStar(95-97 Prostar) hull. It’s a good boat, but higher freeboard and not as sporty as similar SN or Responses, however, the higher freeboard is better for kids or pets. Malibu has many options to consider the Sportster, Response(Closed Bow, LX step over open bow or LXI walk through open bow) and the larger Sunsetter LXI. Like others have mentioned, condition, use history and maintaince history maters more than hours The dedicated brand forums are also a good source of info once you narrow your search. All 94+ MC’s are EFI, some 93’s with LT-1 engine are EFI.

  18. Cell phone, Leatherman and other various small tools. Once lost a pair of sunglasses the day I bought them. AMEX replaced the sunglasses and covered the cell phone for the price of the contract which was above the amount I had charged on the card. I am hoping to recover a large drill bit I use to measure the ice, chuck came loose and it went through the ice. Just got my SCUBA tank filled for that mission.
  19. You are not alone, I was ecstatic to find and be able to recently purchase this 08 CC 196 with classic graphics and timeless colors. Recently a friend was looking for a newer Malibu, he looked at used promo’s but nothing was appealing aesthetically. He ordered a white and black 2017 instead, a change from his two previous Malibu’s which were white and blue.
  20. Congrats on the new boat! If your boat has an E-controls ECM that enable a ZO install you may want to consider a current kit or purchasing the single of GPS puck for that older kit. That is the new standard and the software in that older head unit would need to be updated to work with the single puck. http://www.zerogps.com/products/zero-off-gps-antenna.html
  21. Post #6 of this thread explains it well: http://www.mastercraft.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=27486 "Early 2008 -The world of speed control and tournament skiing is about to be turned upside down by this ZO/PP deal. To make matters worse, ZO and PP are battling over the patent for the GPS differential speed control technology that makes ZO work. PP releases StarGazer. MC releases the 08' TT 197. All 100 boats will have dual installs via the same E-controls multiplug ECM. MC is not allowed to physically install the ZO head into the TT 197 dash, due to some sort of licensing or marketing agreement, probably due to the CC/ZO relationship. TT drivers must do the install themselves. No biggy, takes 5 minutes. Production MCX's still have the standard ECM that cannot talk to ZO. CC promo boats will mostly be ZO. Malibu is in the dark - without the ability to do a ZO install. Summer 2008 - PP and ZO reach an agreement. ZO gets all OEM drive by wire speed control business starting with the 09' model year. Skiers are complaining about early versions of ZO. Diehard perfect pass skiers are flipped out because they can't even upgrade their boats to ZO to practice. The only time they see it is at tournaments or upgrade for 50-60K with a new DBW boat. StarGazer has it's own set of issues. The forums are alive with arguments and bad info."
  22. Just when I thought I was getting current, having gotten a boat with Zero Off... I have a dual puck ZO system, so I will need to buy a single puck to install and utilize this. At least the software is free. Those with single puck boats don’t need to pay anything if they have a cable or access to a cable. This is sort of the Apple iPhone model iOS updates are free, but you need to have fairly current hardware (iPhone 5S or later) to run the latest OS. The Perfect Pass model used to charge for chip updates, bundled with hardware to deliver it.
  23. @jercrane if your inclined the 2017+ TXI is worth a look, the fit and finish has come a long way from the late 90’s early& 00’s Malibu’s.
  24. The prior owner stored and used the boat on Quinsigamond. The boat has a water length cover likely making it hard to see the colors unless it was off the lift and being used. @jmoski I will send you a pm with more details on the 196, to not further jack this thread.
