  1. EJ I can only really compare to my previous 9700. I've only skied 3 sets on it and don't have my fin settings where I want them yet. The water is only 52 and the air bounces around the same, so it's far from ideal conditions. Regardless I know this is a huge step forward from a 9700. In comparision it has a solid feel, it holds edge better and gains angle with less effort while not over rotating. It accelerates faster but more progressively so it feels more under control. The edge change is more equal both sides and it seems easier to keep the ski under you at that point. A few settings away from Nirvana? Keep in mind I'm on a 64.25 so my view may not translate to the longer skies.
  2. I've noticed that most manufacturers' have fin settings the same for all size skies. I'm 5'-7" & 137 lb on a 64.25 ski. For me, no matter what ski I have I've always used slightly shallower & shorter settings ( .002-.005") along with a smaller wing with less angle. Is it just me or does anyone else think it is it size-weight dependent ?
  3. I've been using one of John's fins for the last 4 years, It helped me get from 35 to 38 on a 9700 Just got the Nano a couple of days ago. Couldn't use the stock settings on the std fin. and I think that I'll bolt on the carbon fin tommorow. Mine was a 88
  4. ski :64" 9700 waiting for 64.25 Nano twist Brindings: powershell 4 waiting for powershell 5 vest: straightline gloves: Radar Boa handle: Masterline Custom 13" 1.00" calipers: 8" & 12" various other "tools" & logbook drysuit: bare baggy top wool hat
  5. Thicker packing will make the overheating worse. I don't have a SN but maybe someone here with one can tell you if you are supposd to use 3 or 4 wraps in a 196 (depends on stuffing box size). My Malibu uses 3. Less would cause less friction, less heat.
  6. New packing compresses a little during initial use, so if he has the "feel" he may have it just right. On the flip side, my packing dosen't leak more than a drop an hour. It's been like that for 3 years. I've taken the nut off to look at the shaft and there's no evidence of heat or scoring just a nice smooth shiny shaft. If the packing is overtightened it'll start showing some heat right at the end of the packing on the inside of the nut usually. If you want to be safe, loosen it off 1/8" turn or so. You will probably have to readjust after a few hours.
  7. Razorski1 I completely agree. Been there a couple of times and it's not an instant fix.
  8. Funy, funny, funny, except for the truth that they will wipe out everything else in their path
  9. I'm 55 but 45 on anti inflamitories. We always had adjustable fins, just that we adjusted them on rocks.
  10. I have two courses on my lake. After a heavy rain the river brings in a fair amount of water that causes a 1-2 mph current in one course only. I've skied both straight out of one and into the other. To me it just feels like you're going faster without a doubt. Maybe there should be a water speed meter on each bouy that sends a signal to the cruise to make the boat travels the exact water speed instead of a time ?? (ha ha)
  11. When out of "natural" choices, I found that "Voltaren" an over the counter anti inflamitory worked great for me.
  12. OK, so John, how long should one of your carbon fins last before it's toast ?
